Do not ill-treat a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in Egypt. Exodus 22:21

Be open handed towards your brothers and toward the poor and need in the land.Deuteronomy 15:11


• In the Old Testament the Jews were commanded by God to care of the poor.

• The Old Testament prophets criticized the people for taking advantage of those without money.


• In the New Testament St Luke records a saying by Jesus in a sermon.

“Blessed are you poor”Luke 6:20


Then there is the parable of the rich fool Luke 12:16-21

The land of a rich man brought forth plenty. He couldn’t decide what to do with all his wealth.


I will knock down my barns and build bigger ones


God Said “You fool, this night your soul will be required of you. Who will want your barns when you have gone?”

FOR SALE


So it will be for those who collect moneyBut are not rich before God


Then there is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. St Luke 16:19-31

There was a rich man who feasted well each day and who lived in style. At his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus who fed only on scraps from the rich man’s table

RICH AND POOR IN THE BIBLEThey both die. Lazarus goes to heaven.But The rich man goes to Hell. Despite the fact that the rich man can see Lazarus in heaven. He cannot obtain help from him.


Jesus said to a rich man

“If you want to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. The come follow me.”Matthew 19:21


St Mark 10Rich young rulerOne day a rich young man came up to Jesus and asked. “What must I do to gain eternal life?”


Jesus suggested he should keep the commandments, but sell all that he had and follow him.

Not what the rich ruler wanted to hear. He went away sorrowful because he was a man of great wealth.
