When I was in Boy Scouts, our troop would attend Camp Cherokee in July. It was always hot and our troop would join a number of other troops for merit badge classes, food, and fun. Each morning and evening we would gather by troops around the American Flag and recite the Scout Oath and Law. It was a great time. One of the special things about camp was a Christmas tree in the Cafeteria. On July 25 th (the time we usually went), we celebrated Christmas in July. It was fun to see the lights on the tree, sing Christmas songs, and talk around our tables about Christmas at home. Mary and Joseph went from Nazareth to Bethlehem during the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. As they searched for a place to stay, there was no room for them in the inn. The days had been completed for Mary to give birth and they found shelter in a stable. When Jesus was born, Mary wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger. In that same region, there were shepherds tending their flock by night when an angel of the Lord proclaimed Jesusbirth. The shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Jesus, Mary and Joseph just as the angel said. They worshipped Jesus and left glorifying and praising God telling everyone what they had seen and heard. I reminisce about those summers spent at Camp Cherokee outside of Yanceyville, NC. Maybe this July we can spend time in our own homes celebrating Christmas in July. This year has been a little bit challenging with the Pandemic. As you celebrate Christmas in July dont buy any presents or anything, just take time to spend it with family reflecting on the birth of Christ on that first Christmas Day. Take time to write down a memory of a Christmas or other event from the past that you would like your children or grandchildren to know about and share it with them. If you are away from your children or grandchildren, email them, call or ZOOM with them. you and beneficial to others.

One time I overheard a person say they wish they had written down some of their

grandparents’ memories of their family from the past. Now those memories are gone. Let us

share the encouraging stories to help other generations learn from our mistakes, enjoy their

family heritage, or both.

One of my cherished memories taught me a valuable lesson. I was a child when it was

my week to dust the house. I had gotten to one of the rooms in the house and was dusting a

lamp when the glass lampshade fell and broke. I was so scared at how my parents would react.

Despite my fear, I went outside and told my mother right away. At the time, she was shucking

corn underneath a dogwood tree in the backyard. She did not get mad at me, instead she

checked to see if I was alright and then went into the room and began helping me clean up the

mess. Her reaction and help made all the difference in the world to me. It helped make it

easier to share my mistakes or mishaps later on.

If you don’t mind sharing your memories with me, please email me at

[email protected]. I look forward to hearing/reading your stories and how it felt to

share them with your family.

“The American Dream” July 4, 1776 - Independence Day United We Stand, Divided We Fall

We celebrate July 4th, Our Independence Day. With picnics, parades, and parties, That’s the American way. It wouldn’t be like that, If freedom hadn’t been won. It took lots of great men planning, For that to have gotten done. Names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin come to mind. They helped the 13 colonies unite and combine. Let’s celebrate knowing the American dream did come true, God did bless America for me and for you. Be thankful for our nation, With all its turns and twists. Most of all remember your prayers, Keep them at the top of your list. Thanks be to God. Have a happy holiday! Love,

Dance to End Hunger in Falhadie New Bern not-for-profit, ATEG (Arts to End Genocide) is presenting an exciting, fun, and free event. It is an opportunity to learn West African dance from Malian dance instructor Solo Souleymane. Participants are encouraged to wear African masks and/or costumes and to join in the dancing and drumming. This event was originally scheduled as a live event for October. Depending on the state of the pandemic in the Fall, we will follow the NC guidelines and decided whether it is safe to hold the live event. However, since we all need some fun right now, we have decided to hold a virtual event preview via Zoom. This will be a free event, but is limited to 100 participant screens. The Zoom event is scheduled for Monday, July 20 at 7:00 PM. Reservations will be on a first come/first served basis, so we encourage you to sign up early. Reservations open Wednesday, July 1 @ 9:00 AM. Reserve your spot by emailing your name, address, phone number, and the email address that you will be using to join the event to [email protected]. We will send you a confirmation that you are on the guest list. You can begin planning your costumer. In mid July, we will send you the link to join the event. For questions, please call: Mitch Lewis, 252-670-1339.

PRAY - That is the Way to a Better Day

What’s happening in this world is so sad, People are losing all that they had. Their lives, their homes, their loved ones and more, The corona-virus is at its core. Let’s pray and ask God to help us within, He knows what’s happening and how things have been. Only God can help us through the storms of life, He’s here with us thru good times and strife. Let’s look ahead for a better day, I don’t know what else to say. With God on our side, we will survive. He offers comfort, He is our guide. I know this is a serious poem, Be we are in sensitive times. May God watch over all of you, He loves you, and I do too. May God bless all of you!! Love, Diane Harper July 2020

Free Income Tax Preparation New Bern VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) reopened its free tax return preparation service on June 1. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday through July 7. The location is Christ Church Harrison Center, 311 Middle St. in New Bern. The Pamlico Senior Center, 800 Main Street, Alliance, in Pamlico County will be open each Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to COVID-19, the revised procedure is now a 100% drop off only process (No Waiting). All tax return preparation and quality review will be accomplished off site. Telephone calls will be made to taxpayers by the preparers, as required for clarification. If you owe any money or want to pay estimated taxes for 2020, payment vouchers will be provided when you pick up your returns. A picture ID is required.
