Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been

Prince White

-Mother/Daughter Conflict

-Siblings Rivalry -Parents

• ‘’ Her mother, who always noticed everything and knew everything and who hadn’t much reason any longer to look at her own face, always scolded Connie about it.’’ ‘’Stop gawking at yourself . Who are you? You think your so pretty? She would say’’

Pretty much this quote is saying that Connie wasn't slick at all. She might of thought her mom wasn’t watching her every move but in reality her mom noticed everything. Connie was so conceited about her looks that it got her mom upset at times. To me, I think Connie’s mom was just mad because she wasn’t pretty no more, her beauty days past a while ago .

-Mother/ Daughter Conflict-

• ‘’She was so plain and chunky, and steady that Connie had to hear her praised all the time by her mother and her mother’s sisters June did this, June did that, she saved money and helped clean the house and cooked and Connie couldn’t do a thing, her mind was all filled with trashy daydreams’’

In this quote there was a little tension between Connie and her older sister June. Connie was slim and pretty and young. June was fat. But June was favored more by he mother because she volunteer in helping her mom around the house. Also unlike Connie June hung around kids her age. So there was a competition between them both because there complete opposite from each other .

-Sibling Rivalry-

• (Dad) ‘’ Their father was away at work most of the time, and when he came home he wanted supper ,and read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed’’

• (Mom ) ‘’ Connie’s mother kept picking at her until Connie wished she was dead and she herself was dead and it was over’’

The dad’s quote is saying their dad is a hardworking man, he really don’t speak to them because when he gets home he’s very tired. For the mom this quote mean that Connie was being bothered by her mom because of her beauty. It came to a point where she wanted her own mom to die because she couldn’t stand her choosing sides

-Parents-

• What I found most interested about the themes I choose was they relate to each other in some kinds of way. It also remind me of my family short of. Why well off course my dad love us all but he have his favorite child among us just like Connie’s mom my dad was always on my case about keeping a clean cut and not trying to impress these girls when I get dress.

• The themes I choose enhance my understanding of the story because obviously Connie was the youngest child so she did things teenagers did. Her parents got mad at her because she was only worried about her looks. Connie’s dad pay them no attention so Connie did what made her happy because nobody in her household can make her smile daily.

• I decided to organize my information by annotating from the text, brainstorming, and relating all the similar motifs to other pairs. Also I used my notes to go over what each symbol represents.
