BUT where does water go???• All of these water sources are

connected through the WATER CYCLE…

• But they are also connected through something called DRAINAGE…

Page 4: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

WHERE DOES THE WATER DRAIN TO?

Drainage Basins/Watersheds

Drainage Basins/Watersheds

• An area of land where all water flows to a central river and then eventually to the ocean

But how does it know which way to go?

Divide = high ridge of land from which water will flow in different directions

(from high elevation to low)

Which Drainage Basin are we in?

• Catawba River Wateree River Santee River Atlantic Ocean!

Watershed Activity:

• Create your group’s village on the white piece of paper showing the following things:− Black marker: main streets and buildings− Blue marker: rivers or creeks− Green marker: grass and trees− Brown marker: exposed soil that could

erode− Red marker: pollutants from cars, people,

and animals• Crumple up piece of paper & open to represent your village• Add water source with mist of water!

Watershed Discussion:

• If this is a model of a watershed…−What do the creases in the

paper represent?−What happens to the ink from

the markers as the water flows?−Where will the water eventually

go?−Where will the ink eventually

go? Highest or lowest place?− Are there any problems you see

with this watershed?

DOES ALL OF THIS WATER THAT DRAINS AWAY ALWAYS STAY ON THE SURFACE?

Page 11: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

Groundwater:• Groundwater:

− is water that soaks into the soil and collects underground

• Water Table: • - the top layer of • ground water

Page 12: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

HOW DOES THE WATER GET IN THE GROUND?

Page 13: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

Groundwater:• Through ___________, water

soaks into the ground, but groundwater can only occur closer to the Earth’s surface.

Why?

Page 15: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

Permeable vs. Impermeable:

Page 16: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

WHERE IS GROUNDWATER STORED?

Page 17: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

Groundwater is stored in AQUIFERS…

• Aquifer:−A permeable rock layer that

stores water and allows water to flow through it

Page 18: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

HOW DOES GROUNDWATER COME TO THE SURFACE?

Page 19: Where does water go?. BUT WHERE DOES THE WATER GO???? Subtitle Here

Groundwater comes up!

• Spring:− Water that

naturally flows out of the ground because it is below the water table

• Well:− A hole in the

ground that reaches down to the groundwater in aquifers

(Can be natural or synthetic)

Tie it together!

• WATER CYCLE tells us where water comes from. Today, we discussed where water goes.

• Dear Diary… – Imagine you are a water molecule and you are writing in your diary. Explain the journey you take through the water cycle and what is happening to you along the way.

• Must include watershed, groundwater, and

aquifer AND the steps of the water cycle.
