    PAWSitive Vibes

First of all, thank you for your recent attendance and support of our Parent-Teacher

Conferences. The EES Staff is thankful for and inspired by the support of our parents!

Starting on March 8th, the testing window for the PAWS (Prociency Assessment

for Wyoming Students) will begin. During the last three weeks of March, the entire

student body at EES will be taking different subtests of the PAWS to show their skills

in the areas of reading, writing, and math (4th grade will be doing science assessments

as well). We feel condent that our students will excel in these tests; they have been

working hard all year and the PAWS will reect those efforts.

We ask that you have your child at school every day with a good breakfast and plenty

of rest. Most of our testing will take place during the morning and we need students

    here and ready to go!

If a student misses days during the testing window, he or she is required to make up

all missed testing, so please let us know in advance of planned absences. Also, pleaseprepare your child with the fact that he or she will need to make up any testing missed.

We are very appreciative of your efforts and support of our school. Thank you for all

    you do!

Childrens friendships are an important part of their experience at school. As children becomemore aware of their peers, they begin to place more importance on friendships. Friendships can

be a positive support for children, even if a child only identies one other child as their friend. Research has documented

that having close friendships can help alleviate the effects of stress, increase self-esteem and condence, make children

more resilient against hardship, and be a protective factor against mental health difculties such as depression (Howard

& Landau, 2004). Despite these benets, childrens friendships can sometimes be a source of frustration. Talking with

children and a childs teacher can provide a lot of information on how the child approaches making and keeping friends.

When children need help with establishing or choosing friendships, parents can help by being aware of their childs curre

friendships Who is your child choosing for friends and why? as well as modeling good friendship skills. Children can

be taught specic skills to be friendly, such as giving compliments, being interested in others, communicating, and proble

solving. If your child is having difculty with friendships, you can ask his/her teacher for more information on whats

happening at school. We have friendship groups at Etna for students to make new friends and practice proactive friendship

skills, and I can also work with individual students or small groups on specic friendship issues.

We are pleased to be offering a new kind of After School

Enrichment that can be done at home. In the near future,

we will begin to send home Brain Bags with students.

Each teacher will nominate a student to be eligible to

choose a backpack full of enrichment activities. To be

able to take a Brain Bag home, students will be required

to return a permission slip signed by their parents or

guardians. Bag are checked out on Thursdays and returned

to the school on the following Tuesdays. Every week a

new group of students will have a turn to take home a

Brain Bag and explore its unique contents. We hope you

will take advantage of this great new opportunity when

you are given the chance. Thanks for your support of Etna

Music is also great fun to listen to

for supporting them at their recent

    concerts.

The Etna Elementary Student Council has been very busy the past few months working on a variety of projects. First,

three student council members worked with members of the State Forestry Division to write a grant that was sponsoredand supported by the Star Valley Conservation District. The grant, which will provide funding and support for plantingthe berm in front of the school this spring, took many hours and a lot of outside time for the students to complete and wassupported by all student council members. Well nd out soon if the grant was funded.

Second, the sixth grade representatives have been working with lunch room staff to identify expected behaviors thatfollow the CHECK guidelines.

Finally, the schoolmall.com fundraiser has just begun and will be completed at the beginning of March.

    Great job, Student Council!

Who Let the Dogs Out?!!!In February, Etna 4th graders were caught up in the excitement of watching mushers from all over the world take part in

the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) in Alpine. Thanks to Wendy Bell and Joe and Becky

Lovelace, the students also got some closeup time with the sled dogs and mushers right here at Etna Elementary.

Snowmobiles Are The BestThing That Ever HappenedTo Me by Braxten ByingtonI had a tremendous time at theafter school snowmobile class. The most exciting part of theclass was that I learned how tocut snow to see how soft it is, thatis part of how you nd peoplewho get buried in an avalanche.I really liked the movie becauseit taught us how to watch for

avalanches that are cased fromtemperaturesof 30-45degrees. Ithink that Ilearned howto be saferon a snowmachinewhen Imin themountains.

Thanks for HelpingUs Stay Safe!A special thanks to the Star

    Valley Search and Rescue

    Rob Hoff, Dave Daniels,

    Star Valley Skidoo, and Mr.

    Pierantoni for sharing their

    knowledge and expertise

    during our snowmobile

    enrichment class at Etna

    Elementary School. We

    learned many useful tips

    about avalanches and being

safe in the back country. We

also learned how to take care

    of our snowmobiles and to

    always ride safely. Thank

    you for helping make our

    class a success.
