Reactions 1326 - 6 Nov 2010 Which drugs might induce lupus? Causal relationships between the onset of lupus and the use of carbamazepine, minocycline and possibly hydralazine were found in a UK-based study. However, overall, the selected drugs studied did not seem to be a major cause of lupus, according to the researchers. Primary-care data were derived from the UK General Practice Research Database for the period 1987–2001. A total of 875 incident cases of lupus were identified, and were matched to 3632 controls without lupus or any other autoimmune disorder. Among cases, 107 (12%) had data showing prescription of one or more of the suspected drugs studied. * For some of the drugs, the rate of prescriptions was too low to enable estimation of the associated risk with lupus. However, despite the small numbers of exposed patients, and "low statistical precision", the researchers observed an increased risk of lupus for hydralazine (OR 6.62; 95% CI 1.03, 42.74), minocycline (4.23; 2.65, 6.75) and carbamazepine (1.88; 1.09, 3.22). There was also some indication that the association between carbamazepine and lupus onset was restricted to women. * procainamide, hydralazine, quinidine, isoniazid, minocycline, carbamazepine, acebutolol, captopril, methyldopa, chlorpromazine, Schoonen WM, et al.
