Homemade Strawberry Jam Reci-pe:Ingredients:

· 500 grams of small strawberries, hulled and washed

· 350 grams of castor sugar

· Zest and juice of 1/2 lemon

· 1 sterilized jam jarPreparation:

1. Place the strawberries, lemonjuice, zest and sugar in a largesaucepan. Heat over low heat andsimmer gently until the sugar dis-solves. (Note: Always simmer thefruit and sugar really slowly. Thisprocess extracts the fruit's naturalpectin.)

2. In a separate saucepan, boil thejam jar for 10 minutes. Once ster-ilized, remove from heat and drythoroughly.

3. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn the heat up to medium-highand boil the mixture rapidly for10-15 minutes, stirring occasional-ly.

4. Do the ‘wrinkle test’. If jam isready then remove the saucepanfrom heat and let it sit for 10 min-utes or until the edges of the jamsets slightly. Pour jam into thewarm jam jar and then let it coolcompletely before sealing.

5. If the jam doesn't wrinkle thefirst time, keep boiling it for an-other 5 to 10 minutes and thentest again.

Store the jam in sterilized jam jarsfor several months.

(Wrinkle Test: To check and see ifit’s ready or not, place a spoonfulof jam on a saucer and put it intothe fridge for a minute or two.Touch it with your finger and if it"wrinkles", it's ready. If not, boil itfor another 5 or 10 minutes andthen check again.)

ProductreviewIf you are like me, a passionate paper crafter, then you are obsessed with papers, especially with'Designer Papers' (also called patterned papers or background papers). You'll never have enough!I'm mostly a card maker this is why I'm always on the lookout for smaller, tighter patterns / 6x6 pa-pers.

This is one of the many reasons why I love the Whimsy Designer Paper range designed by MicheleRoos exclusively for Whimsy Stamps. The pattern size is perfect for card making as well as for scrap-booking or other paper projects. The ideally selected, coordinating patterns in each pack sparklethe inspiration. It is always a variety of stripes, dots, flowers/theme related objects, solids, patterns, plaids, etc. in each pack.

Each 6x6 paper pack contains 24 sheets (12 designs, two of each design) of high quality, texturedvellum paper. The great paper quality makes it a pleasure to work with. They won't soak through ifliquid glue is used and the heavy paper also adds to the solidness of cards or other paper projectscreated.

The color palettes used for the Whimsy Designer Papers are amazingly vivid, and brilliant. The sur-face of the paper is nice and smooth and has a satiny shine to it:

When cutting the papers they won't fray.I've had nice clean cuts each and everytime.

They are also perfect for distressing dueto the stronger paper:

I used my electric distressing machineand the paper didn't tear, it distressednicely. Even when I was forcing it throughthe machine back and forth to get aheavier distressed look (right side) it wasnot a problem at all.

I would like to show how fun it is to cover a whole image with glitter. Using thecorrect tools you will be able to transform a great image into a brilliantly sparklyone. This technique is super fun; getting all the glitz yet still being able to see theimage.

Tutorial by Janette Garcia

Supplies:

● Colored image●Scor-Pal double sided adhesive sheets●Crystal Glitter Ritz - Ultra Fine Glitter●Die Cut Machine (optional)

1 2

Step 1: First you will need to cut down the adhesive sheet to yourcolored image size.

Step 2: Next, remove one of the protective sides (brown).Be careful not to touch too much of the adhesive; and lay iton top of the colored image. Rub firmly so that you avoidair bubbles.

Page 59: Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine - Issue 13

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 59 July 2013, Issue 13

Step 3 and 4: *Op-tional- Die cut yourimage. The image isvisible through thewhite protectivesheet. This makes itpossible to align theimage.

Step 5: Remove the white protective sheet. Youare left with an extra glossy image completelycovered in adhesive.

Step 7 and 8: Now you will begin to rubin circles with your finger. (Burnishing)Once you have rubbed (burnished) theentire image you can tap off any excess

Step 6: Next, working over a sheet of paper pile onthe glitter. It is important to use a translucent glit-ter. Glitter Ritz is perfect for this technique. I emptyabout 2/3 of the jar. Most of it will be going backinto the container so there is no need to hold back

Step 9: You can now fold your pa-per to funnel the glitter back intothe container.

10Step 10 and 11: The finished resultis a colored image burnished withglitter. It is hard to capture on pic-ture but it is quite pretty.

See Janette’s finished card on page 7.

Tutorial by Iris Wiechmann

In this coloring tutorial I like to show you my way to color skin with violetshades. I use violet for skin when I want deeper, more prominent shadows. Ialso think it gives the skin a more natural live-like look.

Step 1: I start with my lightest color, E000. This will be alsomy highlight color. Usually I like to have some uncoloredareas (or almost uncolored) for highlights but not for theskin. I think this just doesn't look natural. In this casewhere there is a lot of skin to color I start with a small partof skin. Focus on this area first and then go on to the next. This is important as alcohol markers blend best when wet.The alcohol based markers don't stay wet as long as e.g.water based markers. The alcohol in the markers evapo-rates faster. To keep the paper moist you have to workfairly quick and on smaller areas. I saturate the paper withmy lightest color it is also my base skin color. You can docircle motions or kind of flicking strokes whatever you likebest. I personally never do circles, just don't like it toomuch. I always do light flicking strokes.

There are many different color combinations for skin andthe skin colors I chose for todays tutorial are E000, E00,E21 and BV00 for deep shadows. I also use the colorlessblender. Usually I use more colors but for demonstratingpurposes it is easier with just these 3 skin colors plus onefor shadows.

The image is from Whimsy's Kenny K collection called'Tex' and just perfect for a skin coloring tutorial as it haslots of skin to color. The ink I used for stamping the imageis Memento Tuxedo Black (dye ink) and the paper I usedis X-press It! The X-press It paper is one of my favoritesfor coloring with alcohol markers. I like the great blend-ing capabilities of the very smooth surface and that it cantake up a lot of color before it gets over saturated andstarts bleeding over the lines. This is important if youcolor using lots of layers.

Step 2: With my next darker color, E00, I mark where theshadows in his face naturally will be with the light com-ing more from the front/right side. In this step I don't usetoo much color, just do more like marking where theshadow areas will be.

2

3

Step 3: I then go in with my E000 again and slightlyblend/smooth out the colors. For blending I also al-ways use light flicking strokes.

4Step 4: Now that Iknow where I wantmy shadows I use mydarkest skin color toadd more color tothese areas. I alwayswork light handedjust with the tip of mymarker.

Step 5: I blend out the harsh lines using first E00 and than E000.Always only blend the lines don't go over the whole darker areawith a lighter marker too often as this will fade out your darkercolor pretty quickly.

5

Step 6: Let the image dry slightly before you add your violet color. Then just light handed add the violet shade to the darkest areas. Doyou see how it makes the image pop? You can leave it like it is with theharsh lines or blend in very carefully with flicking strokes just theouter lines of the BV00 color using E00. I'm not a fan of these harshshadow lines so I slightly blended it in (you can see that on the nextpicture). I prefer to have more like a violet tinted shade. But this is alla matter of personal preference.

6

Page 63: Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine - Issue 13

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 63 July 2013, Issue 13

Step 7: Very carefully I blended in the BV00 with my E00marker. Now go to your next area and start again withE000 first to saturate the paper in that area and thenmarking the shadow areas with E00 and blend again withE000.

8 Step 8 and 9: Blending everything with E00 and E000carefully and avoid not to take off too much colorwith your lightest marker.

9

10

Step 10: Let dry slightly and add the violetshade again with BV00. Going back in withE00 and E000 if desired to blend.

11Step 11: In this manner continue coloring the rest of the skin. To have alittle break from all the skin color I went ahead and colored the rest of theimage for a little change. You can see I still have parts of his body to color. For the jeans I used B91, B93, B95 and B97. The hat and the chaps arecolored with E40, E41, E42, E43, E44. For his gloves and hat band I usedbrowns from the E30's range. Hair and all other gray/silver parts are cool

Here is the finished image, ready to be used on a project. As a final step I used thecolorless blender and went over the highlight areas carefully to make them evena bit brighter. I hope you liked my skin coloring tutorial with violet shades and thatI could give you some useful tips and inspired you to give it a try.

Tutorial by Tammy Louise CunliffeCopic markers can blend colors beautifully for images that portray human images, naturescenes as well as animals. Today I’m coloring the “You Moove Me” cow image by the WhimsyArtist Crissy Armstrong. The image is drawn in a cute almost quilt like manner, so the colorchoices are entirely open and don’t require a realistic style. The creation of the look of textureand design on a cows hide can also be created with the Copic ink. Let’s get started with the ba-sic coloring then with the same colors, add some texture dots to the more shadowed areas!

Step 1: Cryogen paper with Momento Tuxedo Blackink starts the base of the project. I use G20 under thecow first to determine the areas where I plan to dark-en the ground the most.

Step 2: Use G21 directly under the cow to create the darkestareas and keep the ink tight up to the outline of the animaland grass, then pull the G21 outward with G20 and repeatthis until you’re happy with the look.

1

2

3 Step 3: Choosing E04, E21, E000 andE0000 for the hide color, starting fromthe lowest edge of the legs, belly, tail, neck and behind the legs in the areas ofshadow, use E04.

6 7

4Steps 4 through 7: Then blend it out with E21 then E000 and finally E0000 into the center of the image, one smallsection at a time.

8

Step 8: Continue to color in the darkerto lighter fashion but when the area issmall, I color the entire area, such asthe bow, first with Y21 and moving fromthe shadow areas and the edges of thesection inward toward the center withY26.

Page 66: Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine - Issue 13

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 66 July 2013, Issue 13

Step 9: Repeat the coloring from center and at edges to-ward the center of the section with a smaller stroke out-ward and very close to the line with Y38. Then to blend thecolors, pull the darkest out with the medium color and dothe same pulling the medium color out with the lightestcolor toward the center of the section.

Step 10: Choose three more colors for the patches and ut-ter and in order to create a dimensional look here, I’veused the darkest color (RV34) in a tiny almost dotted strokeat the inside of the line, pulled it into the center with themedium color (RV32) again with a very small stroke andblended the color toward the center with the lightest color(RV00) almost leaving a white section in the center andused a 0 colorless blender to smooth the edges.

Step 13:The utter is completed the same waywith R20 and R30 with more of the R20 at the topof the utter really close to the cow’s belly

Step 12: Iblended theR20 out withthe R30 inwardin circles for asmall sectionthat needed tolook like skin

Step 11: Forthe nose andutter sectionsI colored theouter edgewith R20 for arosy but fleshylook

Step 14: The bell needs to be moreyellow and red for a bronze look. Iused YR00 to cover the bell, thenYR24 from the top left of the bellto the right so that the bell has thelight section where it is less underthe head of the cow

Page 67: Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine - Issue 13

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 67 July 2013, Issue 13

Step 17: E21 was used to pull the E04 towardthe center in small strokes

15Step 15: The face is covered with E000 first andE21 from the outer edges inward leaving the cen-ter (eye area) in E000

16Step 16: E04 was usedin a thin stroke at theimage lines for shad-owing

1718

Step 18: E000 was used to pull the E21 inward and blend the colors andthe ears were done by pulling the darkest color out from where theyconnect to the head to the tip ending in E0000 at the tip

19

20

Step 19: I usedE50 to color inthe cow hair en-tirely and E41 tomove inwardfrom the edges

Step 20: E42with just a fewvery fine hairlike strokeswere addedwith the dark-est of thethree colorsused

Step 21: When the basic coloring is completed, I’ve used theE04,E21,E000 and E0000 to add tiny dots that add texture. The E04 isclosest to the image line under the belly, at the hoof line, the top andbottom of the tail and on the side of the face. Put E21, E000 and E0000dots moving slightly toward the center of the belly, legs, tail and face.

Tutorial by Janette GarciaAre you the type of person that saves packaging because you are already imagining a project?Well; let me tell you that I have about 20 baby formula cans that I have saved to make intosomething pretty. The day has come and I will be altering a couple of cans into a neat pencilholders.

Altered Cans

Supplies Needed:● Can- any size● Designer papers● Adhesive - wet

foam squares● Colored image

1Step 1: First you will need to strip off any label thatthe can has. Once stripped and cleaned then youcan add your designer paper. I have measured mysize by putting the paper on the can; marking the

2 3Step 2: My 12inch paper doesn’t cover all the wayaround. So I will add a strip of reverse (coordinat-ing) paper. I like adhering the paper with wet ad-hesive making sure to go right to the edges sothat it gets glued down snuggly.

Next, I have wrapped bakers twine around the bodyof my can (this will be part of the design); and somebling towards the bottom. For a much neater look;you can add rows of twine towards the top and bot-tom of the can. I like adding the twine to help the pa-per stay in place.

4Step 4: It is helpful to bend theimage before adding it to thecan. This will help the imagecurve with the can and not stickout

5Step 5: I have used foam squares to givethe image some dimension.

Step 6: I have completed my cans by adding names, banners, and senti-ments.

cloudsTutorial by Janette Garcia

I thought I would share my favorite way to make clouds for my cards. Isaw a tutorial from Bev Rochester and thought it would be fun to do thesame technique using my Copic airbrush system.

Supplies:● Airbrush System● Copic Markers● Cloud Template

airbrushed

1 Step 1: First you must make your template. Bevhas a printable one HERE that you can print andtrim.I have made the second one by using cloudcutouts and gluing them to a strip of paper. Youcould even make your own.

Bev’s Template Link:http://bevscrafts.blogspot.com/2011/06/clouds-template.html

2 Step 2: It is a good idea to protect your work-space with a paper or nonstick mat. I place thetemplate towards the top of the paper andspray using short bursts of air. I like to startspraying on my template and then move ontothe paper so that I do not have harsh bursts ofink.

Page 71: Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine - Issue 13

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine 71 July 2013, Issue 13

These clouds are so fun and quick. I love how soft and airy the result is.

3 4Step 3: Next, move your template down and shiftto either left or right. This is important because youdo not want your clouds to be identical rows. Alter-nate sides and even tilt the template a bit to get amore natural end result.

Step 4: I like to focus the ink in the dips in theclouds. When shifting your template down youmust leave room in between layers. The whitearea(covering with template) is your cloud area. Ifyou do not leave any white then your clouds willnot be defined.

Step 1: Cut stock paper to thesame dimension of your card face

Step 3: Turn your topper over andfold under any of the remaining tapefor that finished look

Step 2: Choose your favoriteWashi tapes and begin coveringyour stock topper starting fromone of the short edges (butting upevenly to each new tape design)all the way up to the end of thetopper.

Step 4: Divide the length of your cards short side by 4even sections and use your cutter to make 4 evenstrips. My card is 4.5” so my strips are 1 1/6” each.

Step 5: Turn every other oneupside down to miss matchyour design and create yourweaved look.

Step 6: I adjusted the strip a bit and added a pink stripmatching my one tape design all the way through, butthis is not mandatory, it just turned out that I liked theway it looks. Glue these strips to the card base, cut anyexcess off from the short edges

Step 7: I covered the top and bottomedge with a coordinating tape to unify thedesign, but this is also not a necessity.

Step 8: Cut slits for the ribbon in the seamof your card with a straight blade

Step 9: Use your choice of die now, I’ve used the Lockand Key Shapeology die from Whimsy stamps, ran itthrough my Cuttlebug 8 times with regular stock paper, then one more with glitter paper for texture.

Step 10: Brush liquid glue onto each lay-er gently with a brush (being sure to lineup the Die cuts. Ending with the glittercut on top! Allow to dry over night.

Step 11: Your die cut is not a 3 dimensionalembellishment!

Step 12: Cover the entire key frontand back with Distress Stain, I’ve usedSpun Sugar so the key will not onlyhave an aged vintage look but will bemore feminine

Step 13: Then mainly around the edges andsome on the glittered pattern on the top, addthe Vintage Photo Distress stain to where thekey will look aged.

Step 14: For the final touches, some radiant rain twin-kling H20 gold on the edges will give the key a rich me-tallic look.
