HEALTH & SOCIAL CAREHealth and social care is an attractive career pathway for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the healthcare sector but do not wish to pursue a professional career in medicine, nursing or social work.
Health and social care combines elements of sociology, biology, nutrition, law and ethics, and will suit those who are interested in a career in health and social care environments including: the NHS; Social Services; independent health and social care, voluntary and charitable sectors; and for those seeking administrative, managerial type roles within health and social care settings.
Social workers work with individuals and families in vulnerable circumstances to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may be helping to protect people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they may require.
The role of a social worker can be challenging; they often face difficult situations in which they have to apply their professional judgement and make tough decisions. BSc (Hons) Health & Social Care L510 Three-year full-time course

SOCIAL POLICY BSc (Hons) Social Policy L400Three-year full-time course
Social policy is society’s response to social need.
Social policy helps us address today’s most pressing social challenges by providing an understanding of how and why societies change, and how policies are put in place to respond to these changes.
Social policy explores issues such as social citizenship rights, questions of equality and fairness, what we should consider as basic human needs and how, and by whom, these should be met. It also provides critical perspectives to issues such as crime, poverty, gender and health inequalities, and assesses the impact of each of these on individuals and society as a whole.

MEDICAL SCIENCES& HUMANITIES
Medical Sciences and Humanities (MeSH) explores both the scientific and human sides of healthcare and provides a solid base for those unsure of their career path, but passionately interested in working within healthcare and medicine. It is a broad subject covering topics such as ethics, philosophy, history, anatomy, physiology, applied biology and pathophysiology.
MeSH graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers. Some have undertaken further training to become healthcare professionals (such as doctors, nurses, and midwives). Other graduates have taken up roles in charities and in the healthcare sector, ( eg. in management posts). Many have also progressed onto postgraduate study at Master’s and PhD level.
Osteopathy is a manner of detecting, treating and preventing conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, namely muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints, in a holistic and scientifically based way - as stated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC.)
It is based on the principle that the wellbeing of an individual depends on their bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue functioning smoothly together. It aims to reduce pain whilst improving mobility by using gentle manipulative therapy rather than drugs or surgical intervention.
Osteopaths are highly competent healthcare professionals, who are recognised by the NHS as fully qualified to diagnose and treat independently.

MIDWIFERY HEALTHCARE SCIENCESMany women are cared for exclusively by midwives throughout their pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Delivering babies is only a small part of being a midwife; midwives are also involved in antenatal and postnatal care, providing counselling, offering support and education and helping families prepare for parenthood. Midwifery is a very responsible career that has incredible rewards to offset the dedication required!
Midwifery is becoming more community based with many midwives delivering services in a woman’s home, GP surgeries, local clinics and children’s centres. There is also the option to be based in a hospital where there are opportunities to work on antenatal, labour and postnatal wards and in neonatal units.

PARAMEDIC SCIENCEA paramedic is the senior healthcare professional at an accident or a medical emergency. Working alone, or with an emergency care assistant or ambulance technician, they assess the patient's condition and give essential treatment.
Paramedics are trained to drive, what is in effect, a mobile emergency clinic, and to resuscitate/stabilise patients using sophisticated techniques, equipment and drugs. Some work on their own and use a motorbike, emergency response car or even a bicycle to reach their patients; they often work alongside the police and fire brigade and, with extra training, can become members of an air ambulance crew.
Paramedics need good communication skills as they work closely with doctors and nurses, briefing them as their patient arrives at hospital. They also deal with patients' relatives and members of the public, in sometimes challenging and sensitive situations.

The healthcare science team play a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a huge number of medical conditions, working alongside doctors, nurses and other health professions; healthcare scientists are essential members of today’s healthcare team. Rapid advances in technology mean this is now one of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding areas to work in the NHS.
AUDIOLOGY B610
An audiologist works with a diverse range of patients of all ages and backgrounds. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to assess hearing and balance function and diagnose the pathological conditions that impair this function. They provide appropriate therapeutic rehabilitation and management.
CARDIAC PHYSIOLOGY B1B8
Cardiac physiologists work with those suspected or known to have heart disease. A cardiac physiologist’s work combines patient assessment and use of specialist equipment to gain diagnostic data about heart structure and function in patients ranging from babies to the elderly. They will provide diagnostic reports to their healthcare colleagues.
Healthcare scientists in cardiac physiology have considerable responsibility, performing complex tests and interpreting the results. They will be expected to teach and supervise other members of the team and will often work in a management role with responsibility for resources (such as staff, budgets or equipment).
RESPIRATORY AND SLEEP SCIENCES B121
Respiratory physiologists work with patients suspected or known to have disease of the respiratory system. The day-to-day work of a respiratory physiologist includes performing tests using a variety of skills, techniques and equipment, whilst they are at rest or during exercise - to obtain diagnostic data about respiratory structures and their function. They will use this data to produce clinical reports that will be used by the healthcare team to inform diagnosis and direct therapy.
Respiratory physiologists also work specifically with patients who have poor sleep quality, by monitoring them - often using home monitoring but sometimes in a sleep laboratory - and help to identify individual problems which require treatment and long-term management.
NUCLEAR MEDICINE B990
Nuclear medicine is a specialist branch of medical physics where radioactive material is used to diagnose or treat disease such as cancer, heart disease, neurological disorders and other abnormalities within the body. The techniques used looks at both the physiology (functioning) and the anatomy of the body in establishing diagnosis and treatment.
Medical physics technologists, specialising in nuclear medicine, work within a multi-disciplinary team, alongside doctors and other healthcare professionals, to deliver the most advanced techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of disease utilising isotopes and radiation in its various forms.
Those specialising in nuclear medicine will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills as it is a patient-facing role.
RADIOTHERAPY PHYSICS B1F3
Radiotherapy is the treatment of cancer with high energy radiation such as X-rays.
The role of the radiotherapist is to develop the individual treatment plan using advanced computer calculations. Planning starts with imaging of the tumour usually by CT or MRI. The tumour is then outlined and the target volume determined. The direction and energy of the beams is then calculated to ensure maximum effect on the tumour with minimal effect on the surrounding tissues.
A radiotherapist ensures equipment used in radiotherapy is calibrated precisely and used safely, enabling the radiotherapy team to update the treatment plan during a course of treatment.
