Following is a look at the American athletes projected to contest the 2010 Tour de France, specifically outlining their start in the sport.

Brent Bookwalter The 26-year-old came to the attention of many when he finished second in the opening prologue of one of cycling’s Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia,

earlier this year.

The avid mountain biker won seven USA Cycling Collegiate National titles in that discipline while attending tiny cycling powerhouse Lees-McRae College in North Carolina

Tom Danielson Tom had his breakout ride in 2006 winning the grueling stage 17 of the Vuelta a España while riding for his team Discovery.

In 1996, Tom won USA Cycling’s former Mountain Bike National Championship Series points series as a junior and represented the U.S. as a member of the Junior Worlds team in Australia

Tyler Farrar

The next great athlete in the USA cycling pipeline, the well-known sprinter may also show his strength in the prologue and short-distance time trials.

George Hincapie The only man to ride all seven Tour de France victories with Lance Armstrong is returning to

salesman at a local shoe store in Iowa City. The shop happened to be

on the course of the Snake Alley Criterium - one of the top domestic races in America. It was there he sold a pair of shoes to a bike shop owner who offered Jason a job, and from there he was hooked on the sport.

Danny Pate A former U23 UCI Time Trial world champion,

Pate has developed into an all-around road racer in his professional years.

Christian Vande Velde One of only two Americans in history to wear the white Best Young Rider jersey in the Tour de France, Vande Velde

joins Hincapie as a solid domestique in the European peloton.

Tejay Van Garderen The only potential American to make the U.S.-based HTC-Columbia’s Tour de France squad, Tejay is also the youngest of the American TDF prospects at 21. Despite recently finishing third

overall at the Criterium du Dauphine Libere, a well-know Tour tune-up, Van Garderen’s HTC-Columbia team is expected to save his young legs from the Tour in anticipation of big things to come.

David Zabriskie The only American to win a stage in each of cycling’s three grand tours, the time trial specialist will again be

a favorite in the race against the clock.

The well-known jokester then graduated to the U.S. Postal Pro Tour team
