OUTGOING CHAPTER OFFICERS

December 31, 2016 marks the end of the 2015-2016 term for the current administration of the WPHD HOG Chapter Board of Directors. Some Offi cers have chosen to continue and have been reelected while others have chosen to be active in the Chapter but not in an administrative capacity. Th ere are six outgoing Offi cers and each has had a tremendous impact on the Chapter over their term and deserve special recognition for their hard work and dedication in making the Chapter the success that it’s been. Th ey have not only volunteered their time but have brought fun, unity and dedication to the Chapter putting smiles on the faces of Chapter members.

Greg Petrie, Secretary. Greg has been active with the Chapter since it was formed and in a former administration held the position of Treasurer. As Secretary for this administration Greg has been invaluable when policy decisions have needed to be made. His

leadership role and his “can do” attitude have inspired all on the BOD. Greg has been THE leading force in our eff orts with the Ronald McDonald House, the Chapters chosen charity. His leadership role with the Ronald McDonald House has been infl uenced by experiences in his personal life. Greg has been a great Offi cer.

Marguerite Cutchey, LOH. Marguerite has tirelessly led the Chapter’s Ladies of Harley (LOH) division. She’s organized many activities for the enjoyment of LOH members as well as chapter members. She’s put together self defense classes,

fi rearms shooting classes and a number of fun and memorable events such as an annual ride to an orchard in the Fall as well as an evening on Lake Minnetonka aboard the historic Minnehaha a 1906 vintage water taxi that was raised from the depths of the lake and beautifully restored. Jim Pawlowski, Editor. Jim’s talents have really been a boon to the Chapter. He has produced our

Quarterly Newsletter with articles of interest to our members and has been a real factor in the Board Room when decisions regarding Chapter business need to be made. Jim is the essence of the term “volunteering spirit” and can always be counted on to take on tasks that need attention. He’s used his professional talents to produce posters and fl yers for Chapter events and happenings from Ronald McDonald House to Motorcycle Hill Climbs. Jim will be missed in the Board Room but has promised to remain available as a resource for the Chapter.Th ank you Jim!

Cecilia Howard, Photographer. Cece can always be recognized by her

“signature” pink boots, fl ashy outfi ts and broad smile! She has recorded our Chapter meetings and events with her photographic abilities and has the ability to make people

smile for the camera with her electric personality. Cece has not only graced the Chapter with her photography skills but has been an outstanding volunteer for Chapter events including hosting the dinner preparation for one of our Ronald McDonald House dinners. Cece can always be counted on to step up when help is needed for any Chapter activity. Th ank you Cece!

Dave Kane, Membership. Dave’s commitment to the Chapter has been in a word impressive. He’s

not only the Membership Offi cer but Dave is also a Spokesman, a Road Captain and a consummate volunteer. He has a background in both martial arts and fi rearms and has organized shooting nights and self defense classes for LOH. Th e duties of the Membership Offi cer are time consuming and complicated and during the past months Dave has been working with his successor to insure an orderly transition of duties. Th ank you Dave you’ve been a real asset!

Dave Knutson, Head Spokesman. Dave is one of the original Chapter members and has been

around since Moby Dick was a minnow. He’s a guy who always has a smile on his face and a song in his heart. His eff orts leading the Spokesman have been excellent and the results outstanding. Dave is also one of our senior Road Captains and has eff ectively designed and led some of the Chapters most challenging rides such as the Washington DC Ride to the Wall and the Biker Blues and Barbeque ride the Chapter did in 2016. Dave has been and will continue to be an integral part of the Chapter. Th ank you Dave!

So there it is, six Offi cers whose eff orts have been pivotal in the success of the WPHD HOG Chapter over the 2015-2016 term. I’m happy to say that they are NOT going away, they will all continue to be active Chapter members who have chosen to RIDE and HAVE FUN!

A T STJIM CONKLIN (ARD)

In the early days of motorcycle racing board tracks were the most popular spectator sport in the country!

Th e fi rst year that the Indianapolis 500 car race was run there were nearly twice as many spectators at a nearby board track motorcycle race! Th e demise of board tracking was due to some horrifi c accidents involving both racers and spectators. Bikers being bikers the need for speed moved the action to dirt “fl at track “racing venues.

As the bikes became modifi ed by racers and with the major factories still locked in a battle for race track driven sales, the bikes became more modern. In the 1940’s the fl athead WR750 became the bike to beat.In 1952 the WR750 gave way to the KR750. While still a fl athead style motor the KR actually featured a modern suspension and lightweight allow materials such as aluminum wheels.

In 1970 the old fl athead design KR was replaced by the iron head over head valve XR750. At fi rst the XR750 was based on the same production sportster head design used in the street legal sportsters. Th ese iron head XR-750s of 1970–71 were prone to overheating (humorously called “waffl e irons”) as well as having insuffi cient power.

Page 4: wild prairie hog - Constant Contactfiles.constantcontact.com/773613bf301/557483a5-d08...road legal version of the world’s winningest racing motorcycle. Sadly the price was nearly

Th e engine was again re-designed for 1972 with an all-aluminum head and cylinder package with bigger bore and shorter stroke for the same 750cc displacement. And the modern XR750 was born! Th is version is still quite competitive and as racers are apt to do the original 70hp or so has now been pushed in excess of 100hp in a bike that weighs less than 330lbs!

Th is winning setup was also adapted in 1972 for road racing in the XR750TT variant.

Th e XR750 was also the favorite motorcycle of stunt performer Evel Knievel. Knievel used the bike from December 1970 until his fi nal jump in January 1977. An XR-750 was included in the 1998 Th e Art of the Motorcycle exhibition, and one of Knievel’s bikes is in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History America on the Move exhibit.

Th e XR1000 was born in 1983 in response to the public clamoring for a road legal version of the world’s winningest racing motorcycle. Sadly the price was nearly $7000 new, (nearly twice the cost of a new FLH touring Harley) and the low volume of sales limited production to just two years 1983-1984. Actual number of XR1000’s produced was a mere 1750 or so for both years combined making it one of the rarest Harley Davidsons ever made for street use. Th is rarity has driven the price for a pristine example to more than twice the list price.

As many of you know I’ve owned a large number of Harleys in my life. For many years now I’ve lusted aft er a street legal XR750 but it’s only been a dream until recently I’ve pursued and researched the eff ort needed to bring a true XR750 fl at tracker to the street. What I have found is the limitations of the race bike (no charging system, no starter, no titles, etc.) make the conversion of a true race only bike to a street legal machine an extremely costly endeavor. Add to these issues are the inherent problems with race motors and chassis when attempting to use them in a street setting. Th at being said the XR1000 seems like the most practical route. Th e only stumbling block? Where to fi nd one??? Aft er many years of mulling this project over and occasionally actually seeing an XR1000 on the street or in a museum I had nearly given up. In the past few months I started my search again and aft er tracking several possibilities that turned into dead ends I have fi nally found a 1983 XR1000! Not only

did I fi nd one but I found one with only 2300 actual miles on it! I love the internet! It is in running condition and nearly all stock with minor exceptions (someone painted it a very un-XR white!) Now my donor bike is in place and the real fun starts! Next comes the task of converting it to what is known as a “street tracker “. Th e stock sheet metal will be replaced with custom made fi berglass race parts reducing the overall weight by a few dozen pounds. And with some hard work it should end up looking like this.

My eventual goal aft er riding it for a few years in street tracker trim is to modify it once again into the ultra rare (only 10 examples produced) XR750TT road race bike replica/tribute.

Th ere are many street trackers out there using many diff erent donor bikes and trying hard to look the part but in my opinion the only really well done examples use the very unique dual carburetor head setup of either the XR750 or the XR1000 there is in my opinion simply so substitute for this iconic motorcycle.

Still the winningest racing motorcycle in the history of motorcycle racing of any kind!!

A record which is a proud achievement for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company and a great source of pride for those of us that have the privilege to actually own one of these rare bikes!
