WILDERNESS UPGRADE FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS (WUMP)

WUMP COURSE INFORMATION The Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals (WUMP) course prepares you to make tough decisions in tough environments. Whether you operate in a remote location or an urban setting with limited resources and communication challenges, this course will help build your improvisation and decision-making skills. The unique curriculum includes advanced topics such as dislocation reduction, focused spinal assessment, wound closure, litter packaging and medication administration. You'll also learn how to improvise equipment, deal with challenging environmental conditions and prevent emergencies. The intense, hands-on curriculum uses scenarios, mock rescues and case studies that are specially tailored for your unique situation. This five-day course is ideal for EMT’s, first responders, nurses, physicians, and other medical professionals. This certification course will upgrade EMT’s to Wilderness EMT and all others to Wilderness First Responder in accordance with the current standards in wilderness/rural pre-hospital medicine. The Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals course is pre-approved for 48 hours of EMT CEU’s by CECBEMS.

Recertifying Wilderness Certifications The WUMP can also be used to recertify your Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification or the wilderness component of your Wilderness EMT, bringing you up to date on current protocols in wilderness medicine. Please remember you cannot be a WEMT unless you hold a current EMT certification (see EMT RTP below). WMI wilderness certifications are 2-year certifications. Students recertifying WFR or the wilderness component of their WEMT must submit a photocopy of your WEMT or WFR certification on the first day of the course. (There is a one-year grace period for recertification of WMI of NOLS wilderness certification cards. Please keep in mind that your certification is not current during this grace period and therefore you cannot work as a WFR or WEMT.)

EMT BASIC REFRESHER TRAINING PROGRAM For students looking to recertify their EMT Basic, the University of Utah’s Center for Emergency Programs is offering the EMT Basic Refresher Training Program immediately preceding the WUMP: October 6-8, 2012. More information about EMT recertification or the RTP can be found on the WMI website. The RTP is a separate course that requires registration through WMI. These two courses are run consecutively intentionally, as





together the CEU’s available meet the needs of many WEMT’s looking to recertify. See Recertification Requirements as described in the pre-course information packet for the EMT RTP course held at the University of Utah.

CPR RECERTIFICATION A current professional level CPR card is required for EMT certification and most medical professions. CPR recertification is available as a 2-part add-on module at this class. The American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS CPR recertification module involves a streaming video tutorial and a practical test that can be scheduled though the University of Utah Center for Emergency Programs. YOU MUST REGISTER FOR EACH OF THE TWO STEPS OF THE RECERTIFICATION PROCESS SEPARATELY.

1. Register for the online “BLS for Healthcare Providers online part 1” through the AHA at http://www.onlineaha.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.courseCatalog&f=filter_healthcare. This portion can be completed at any time but it must be completed prior to the skills practice and testing portion and you must print the certificate of completion. The online portion is run by the AHA and costs $22.

2. The skills practice and testing portion will take place on Thursday October 11 at 5PM. Depending on the number of participants, it will likely be completed by 6- 7PM. Register for the practical portion by contacting the U of U Center for Emergency Programs at [email protected] or 801-581-4512. The practical portion is run by the U of U and costs $25. Please bring your certificate of completion from the online portion to the practical portion. For those taking the RTP, there will be another practical session offered on Sunday October 7 at 5PM.

REGISTRATION/POLICIES

A deposit of $300.00 is required to reserve your spot in the WUMP. Tuition balance is due the first day of the course. Tuition is non-transferable. Payments may be made via check, with driver’s license number, Visa/MasterCard*, or cash. The tuition fee covers textbook (NOLS Wilderness Medicine, by Tod Schimelpfenig), syllabus, equipment and certifications. WMI is not obligated to allow any student to attend a course until all WMI paperwork has been received, reviewed and approved by WMI. A full refund will be given if we are forced to cancel the course for any reason.

WMI STUDENT AGREEMENT

(Including Assumption of Risks and Agreements of Release and Indemnity) Please download this agreement from http://www.nols.edu/wmi/pdf/wmi_agreement.pdf and read it very carefully as it affects your legal rights. Bring the two-page signed document to the first day of the course. If you are a minor, a parent or guardian must sign the document. Failure to provide a signed document will result in you not being able to participate in the course. WMI participants, including minors, will have unsupervised free time throughout the course. Any activities during the free time are not part of the WMI program and are at the sole risk of the participant.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY If a student cancels or withdraws from a course:

• Greater than or equal to 30 days prior to the course starting date, sponsor will retain a $35.00 administrative fee.

• Within 30 days of the course start date and once the course has begun, tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable as per the following:

o WFA, WFR-R, WMPP loss of full tuition. o WFR, WAFA, WUMP loss of course deposit.





COLLEGE CREDIT

The course is pre-approved for four (4) semester hour credits through the University of Utah at an additional cost of $350.00. Information and registration forms will be provided by the instructors on the first day of class.

EMT CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEU’S) WMI is proud to be a Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) accredited organization. Please bring a photocopy of your current EMT card(s) with you to your course. The majority of State EMS agencies recognize CECBEMS approved CEUs. Check with your state or local EMS agency to confirm CEU recognition prior to the course.

PHYSICIAN CMEs

Through joint sponsorship with the Wilderness Medical Society physicians may earn 36 hours of category 1 CME's for participation in the Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals course. There is an additional fee of $100 for physicians requesting CME's. This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Wilderness Medical Society and the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS. The Wilderness Medical Society is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

COURSE FORMAT AND EQUIPMENT Check in is at 7:45 AM on the first day of the course. Course days run from 8:00am – 5:00pm plus evening sessions. Attendance is required at all scheduled classes. The format for the WUMP is classroom lectures (50%) integrated with practical skills sessions and scenarios (50%). Lectures followed by practical skill sessions, role-playing, simulated rescues and improvisation drills are part of the day-to-day activities. Scenarios, and practice sessions will take place both inside and outside. Please bring outdoor clothing appropriate for lying on the potentially wet, muddy or snowy, cold ground playing the role of both rescuer and patient. Frequently stage (moulage) blood and make-up will be used to emphasize the reality of a scenario. The classroom environment usually lends itself to a pair of comfy shoes/slipper and a camp-type chair. You will need: A large day pack, water bottle, warm backcountry clothing including water/snow proof tops and bottoms, sturdy boots (pack boots work well) and a head lamp or flashlight, (and snowshoes or backcountry skis on winter courses). The curriculum includes a 4-hour evening mock rescue that will require everyone to be prepared for cold, potentially snowy, wet conditions.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, TRAVEL/DIRECTIONS The course will meet in room 2102 Annex Building (second floor, Wing C) at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City Campus (1901 E. South Campus Drive). From I-80 take exit 129. Head north on Foothill Dr. for 3.4 miles. Turn right onto Mario Capecchi and go 0.4 miles. Turn left onto East South Campus Drive and make the first right hand turn (100 meters). From I-15 Southbound take exit 307. Head east on 400 South for 2.9 miles. 400 South merges into 500 South. Continue on 500 South for another 1.3 miles. Turn left onto Mario Capecchi and go 0.4 miles. Turn left onto East South Campus Drive and make the first right hand turn (100 meters).





* About 10-15 minutes from I-80 or I-15, although traffic may cause delays during rush hour. Students parking in the lot at the Annex on weekdays are required to buy a parking permit ($7 for one week) at the Commuter Services office in the Annex. Night and weekend parking is free.

LODGING/ RECREATION

There are no room and board packages available for this course. Salt Lake City host many hotels with prices in all budgets. There is no camping within the area of the course. There are many restaurants around the University Utah area available either by Trax (the local train system) or by car, including some within walking distance. The U of U Guest House (www.guesthouse.utah.edu/) is a short walk from the classroom and provides the most convenient lodging. There is a Trax station (www.rideuta.com/) right at the classroom (Huntsman Center stop). Any hotel in Salt Lake City near the University Trax line will make for an easy commute. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail is a recreation area within walking distance from the classroom and the University Guest House. This area allows for great trail running, hiking and mountain biking. The Wasatch Mountain Range hold world-class recreation of all sorts, including climbing, skiing/riding, mountain biking, trail running etc. These areas are all within a 15-minute drive of the course location.

PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT THE TEACHING OR LODGING SITES. THIS INCLUDES LEASHING THEM OUTSIDE. NO EXCEPTIONS. Any student bringing pets to class will be asked to leave class until the pet is safely situated in a kennel or other facility.
