Basic Principies

Points of Sail

Points of SailWhen sailing, the strength and direction

of the wind are all-important. Look

around you and see which way flags are

flying. You can also feel the wind and

sense its direction by turning your face.

Your ears are highly tuned to sensing

wind, as well as sound. When you change

from one point of sail to another, the

sails, centreboard and crew positions

must also be adjusted to match the

dinghy’s balance and heading towards or

away from the wind.

Head to windThis is the no-sail zone and extends 40° either side of the oncoming wind direction. Turn

too high into the wind and the sails will start to flap, the boat will slow and eventually drift

backwards. The only way to make progress is to beat to windward at 40-45° either side of the

wind with sails sheeted in hard, and make a zigzag course. This is called beating to windward.

Beam reach - port

tack: 90° from the wind

The fastest point of sailing.

Sails are eased half way out,

the centreboard is raised

half way and crew continue

to balance the boat.

Close reaching - port tack: 50-80° to the wind

Sails are eased out and the centreboard is aised a quarter of

its way into the case. Crew continue to balance the boat.

Broad reach - port tack:

120-160° from the wind

Sails eased three-quarters out, the

centreboard is raised three-quarters

up and the forward crew will

invariably need to move their weight

inboard to keep the boat level.

Broad reach - starboard:

120-160° from the wind

Training run - port gybe: 170° from the wind

The safest angle of sail often used as a starting point to

teach novices. Sails are eased right out, centreboard is fully

raised and crew weight is spread across the boat. Run - Port gybe: 175-180° from the wind

Sailing directly down wind either on port or starboard gybe. Sails are eased right out, the

jib can be set on the opposite side to the mainsail (goose winged) to project greater area

to the wind, centreboard is fully raised and crew weight is spread across the boat.

Close-hauled - starboard tack:

Sailing 40-45° to the wind

This is beating to windward with sails

sheeted in hard, centreboard fully down

to resist the sideways force of the wind

on the sails, and crew weight out on the

windward side to balance the boat.

Our first family dinghy, bought on impulse from a garage forecourt was our pride and joy - for the first month. We soon learned how unsuitable it was!

Once you know the basics, you will have so much better idea of the type of boat best suited to your skill level and the area you want to sail. If you are joining a club, then selecting one of their adopted classes will introduce you to a group of like-minded enthusiasts who will be only too pleased to offer help and advice – until you start beating them around the race course! If you prefer a boat to potter about in and tow to various venues behind the car, then you need one that is lighter than the towing vehicle, easy to launch and recover, and simple to rig.

Wooden boats spell HIGH MAINTENANCE. Trapeze rigged dinghies offer high performance, but only for those with the experience and agility to manage them. Sailing

a singlehander is the hardest way to learn, but can provide a great deal of pleasure when racing them in a fleet. The boats selected by the UKSA as sailing primers provide a good basis on which to categorise and judge other classes by.

Choosing a dinghyResist the impulse to buy the first dinghy that takes your fancy, and get some experience either at a sailing school or club before jumping in with both feet.

The Laser Bahia is a modern, stable, general-purpose family dinghy that can be sailed, rowed or motored. This low maintenance roto-moulded Jo Richards design even has a removable cool box for family outings. She is an ideal first boat to learn to sail in, having plenty of room for two crew and an instructor, and with gennaker and trapeze options, is easy to upgrade performance for racing.
