The Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center
distinctive academic programs
interactive learning
careers of the 21st century
The completion of the Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center during the College’s 90th
anniversary year reflects Emmanuel’s goal to build distinctive academic programs in the
liberal arts and sciences. Leveraging our unique location in Boston and in the heart of
the Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA), Emmanuel College seeks to prepare
students with the skills for the careers of the 21st century.
Featuring 14 laboratories for biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, neuroscience
and faculty research, as well as multipurpose classrooms, meeting spaces and common
areas, the four-floor Wilkens Science Center fosters the type of interactive learning and
community building that is the hallmark of the Emmanuel College educational experience.
Students have described the
Wilkens Science Center as
“Academics in Action.” The glass
façade, overlooking the quad,
gives our community a unique
view of the building’s activity.

enhanced green space
professional development
The Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center is a “green” building and speaks to the
21st century and sustainability in every way. This new building is energy-efficient and
its underground parking creates more green space on campus. The glass façade offers
a spectacular view of this enhanced green space and open atriums provide views of the
Emerald Necklace and the Boston skyline that are unmatched.
The Wilkens Science Center will also support teaching and learning at the K-12 level
through the Center for Science Education. This initiative will provide opportunities
for professional development for teachers and student programming with the goal of
enhancing science education, particularly in urban schools.
As viewed from the Wilkens
Science Center, Emmanuel
is located along the historic
Emerald Necklace, just across
from the Back Bay Fens and in
the heart of the city of Boston.
1.
Emmanuel’s unique partnership
with Merck Research Laboratories-
Boston has provided students
with internships, scholarships,
seminar series and cutting-edge
research equipment.
2.
The sciences are an integral part of
an Emmanuel education. Since the
early years of the College, we have
maintained a strong dedication to
these disciplines. The Wilkens Science
Center will strengthen this tradition.

Honoring the Wilkens
Maureen Murphy Wilkens ’56 and Frank Wilkens continue to express their commitment
to Emmanuel College through their generosity and support. Their contributions have
had a great impact on the Emmanuel community. We are pleased to name the Maureen
Murphy Wilkens Science Center in their honor.
The Wilkens also generously supported the Jean Yawkey Center, which houses the
Maureen Murphy Wilkens Atrium, and offer financial support to students through the
Maureen Murphy Wilkens Scholarship Funds. We remain thankful for donors such as
the Wilkens who share our passion for offering students exceptional opportunities in a
dynamic learning environment.

Emmanuel College’s commitment
to the promise of a liberal arts
and sciences education.
