What Do Language Courses Cost? I. One German course per semester is free for exchange
students
II. Courses offered by the viadrina sprachen GmbH cost
180 euro each (for 4 hrs/week).
III. All other courses offered by the Language Centre are
free.
Steps to a language course 1. Determine your prior knowledge
• No prior knowledge? => sign up for Grundstufe 1 with the viadrina sprachen GmbH
• You have some prior knowledge? Take a placement
test at the Sprachenzentrum. IMPORTANT: Do not miss the placement test date or time!!!
You will have to wait a semester if you miss the placement exam.
Placement Tests – Please be on time! Electronic tests on computer (Time: up to 60 minutes)

ECTS-Credits for Language Courses
• Exchange students receive ECTS-Credits for successfully-completed language courses (meet attendance, course and exam requirements).
Language courses with 2 LVS: 3 ECTS-Credits Language courses with 4 LVS: 6 ECTS-Credits Language courses with 8 LVS: 12 ECTS-Credits
• A limited number of courses of a certain level and in a certain language may be credited: Grundstufe – Oberstufe max. 4 LVS each, Wissenschaftskommunikation max. 8 LVS.
Language Course Certificates
To receive your Credits you must: • attend at least 75 % of the course (business students
plan carefully - check it fits with both blocks!) • have passed the course test or other course evaluation
requirements
Usually courses are “pass or fail.” Exchange/Erasmus students need a numerical grade, so please tell your teacher this at the start of the semester. Your credits go on your university transcript. Contact: Bernd Schünow & Katja Herzel (Office AM 208)
