SOCK DRIVE TO BENEFIT FAMILY SERVICE ASSOCIATIONWARRENSBURG – The harsh Warren County winters bring many chal-lenges to those in need. One that we may not think of is keeping feet warmfrom the chill. The Family Service Association of Glens Falls is in need ofsock donations to stock their Emergency Holiday Table. Warren County 4-H youth will be hosting a sock drive in hopes of collecting new socks forthis very worthy cause. Donations may be dropped off at the Cornell Co-operative Extension office on 377 Schroon River Road, Warrensburg, NY12885. Ask your friends, family, and neighbors to help us fill this basicneed. FREE FIRST FRIDAY COMMUNITY DINNERGREENWICH – The second year of monthly FREE dinners inGreenwich are off to a great start. The first Friday of every monthSept.-June dinner is served at Centenary Methodist Church inGreenwich from 5:30-7:00pm. This month's dinner is hosted by theGreenwich Youth Center. The kids will be serving up freshly pre-pared pizza, salad and cupcakes thanks to the generous donationsand support from many local businesses and volunteers. This isalways a fun event with over 25 tables displaying nice craft andother items for sale. The "Cookie Walk" will offer numerous vari-eties of cookies to choose from. They will be selling raffle tickets fora quilt. They will also have the Silent Auction, where you can take achance on a variety of special items. Their Jewelry Table will havemany nice new and used items. Start shopping for Christmas. WILLING TO HELP BRIGHTEN A SENIOR CITIZEN’S DAY?SARATOGA COUNTY – Seeking volunteers willing to spend a morning orafternoon transporting senior citizens for medical appointments. Volunteerswill utilize Saratoga County transportation vehicle for transport. Locationsof transport may be outside of Saratoga County. Drivers may pick up 1-3seniors for appointments and drive to destination. Volunteers can helponce per week or every other week or as a substitute driver. Flexiblescheduling for all volunteers. NORTH RIVER – The holiday season is just around the corner and this year the NorthRiver United Methodist Church’s Sunday school children are participating with theSamaritan’s Purse/Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Gift Campaign. Since 1993,more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s lovethrough the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. The Sundayschool youth are seeking donations for children ages 2 – 14. The following are items ofneed are SCHOOL SUPPLIES: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons or markers,stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picturebooks, etc. TOYS: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos,jump ropes, toys that light up or make noise, etc. HYGIENE ITEMS: toothbrushes, mildbar soap, combs, washcloths, etc. OTHER: T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hairclips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights, batteries, and plastic boxes. By the time you’re reading this Christmas will be only about 6 weeks away. I’ll have to admit that this makes me feel a little queasy since I haven’t put a bit of thought into my gift list let alone actually purchasing any gifts. I know a lot of folks (the smart one I guess) have already finished their shopping. I can’t imagine being quite that organized but I admit to being a little envious. I also know that quite a few neighbors of mine took advantage of earlier dry weather to get their outside Christmas lights put up. Considering how fickle the weather seems to be this year, that was indeed a smart move. There’s nothing worse than freezing your fingers trying to put up holiday lights while getting dripped on by ice water. I’ll admit that I have yet to tackle that project so I’m really hoping for just one more warm weekend. I’m not too optimistic though. I have a bad feeling about this winter. I’ll go on record as saying that we’re in for a one heck of a winter with snow early and a snow event of at least 12” before Christmas. In a sick kind of way I’m kind of looking forward to it. There are those among us who can remember a time when the poinsettia wasn’t one of our holiday plants. They’ve only recently arrived on the holiday scene. The poinsettia was cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico B.C. (Before Cortez). Called Cuetlaxochitl, it was a symbol of purity and was highly prized by the Aztecs. Later, the flowers were used by Franciscan priests in nativity processions in colonial Mexico. Mexican folklore holds that the poinsettia or ‘flower of the Holy Night’ appeared during a miracle that occurred on Christmas. A boy who came to the church on Christmas was so poor that he had nothing to offer the Christ child. In shame, he fell to his knees and prayerfully asked God to forgive him. When he stood up, the first ‘flower of the Holy Night’ appeared from the soil at his feet so he would have a gift to offer. Eventually, around 1830, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, saw the plants, and sent some home to South Carolina. Poinsett, like so many early Americans, was a respected amateur botanist. He propagated his plants and shared them with friends and botanical gardens throughout the U.S. From that time, English speaking countries have known the poinsettia. Around 1906, a German immigrant, Albert Ecke of California thought that the easy-to-grow poinsettia might make an interesting cut flower. It’s habit of producing bright red leaves, or bracts, just before the solstice seemed to make it a natural for the holiday season. His idea caught on, especially in California and the southwest. Over the years, Albert and his son Paul began breeding poinsettias for larger bracts and bracts of different colors. They eventually developed varieties that performed well in small pots. The modern poinsettia plant was born. Years of hard work and experimentation blossomed into a huge business with the Ecke family at the center. Most of the poinsettias grown today are from cuttings produced at the huge Ecke Poinsettia Ranch in California. They continue to develop new varieties. We now have white, pink speckled, bi-colored and new yellow poinsettias, all thanks to the efforts of the Ecke family. Another tropical that has found its way into the American Holiday scene is the Christmas Cactus. Like the poinsettia, the Christmas Cactus is a short day bloomer. This means that decreasing day length is the trigger for the flowering period to begin. The ancestors of our modern Christmas cacti are native to the forests and jungles of South America. Although a true cactus, the Christmas cactus seems to break all the rules of cactus culture. In it’s native environment, the Christmas cactus (Zygocactus truncatus, or Schlumbergera bridgesil), and it’s relatives, the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncatus, or Zygocactus truncatus) and Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertnerl), are all epiphytes. In other words, these are cacti that grow in trees! These forest or jungle cacti grow their roots into the bark of their host tree.
