As Christianity spread, St. Nicholas’ image began to change. Russia’s Dedt Moroz, or

Father Ice and the Norse god Odin and even the old Roman deity Saturn had white beards and

the power to fly through the air or magically appear. As the centuries ground along, these

attributes were melded with the myths surrounding the good St. Nicholas. Communication

back then wasn’t what it is today so there were many different versions of St. Nicholas.

In many of these a punisher known variously as Knecht Rupert, Ru Claus, Pelznickel,

Aschenklaus and Black Pete accompanied the good saint. This sinister sidekick was on

the lookout for children that misbehaved. Legend has it that Black Pete would abduct bad

children or (more often) leave a birch switch behind as a hint of their fate if the bad behavior

continued. Most often, St. Nicholas intervened, saving even naughty children from Black

Pete, teaching them that they could earn another chance if they would mend their ways.

Eventually the evil accomplice was dropped leaving it up to St. Nicholas to be the sole judge of

whether a child was “naughty or nice” and the birch switch was replaced with a lump of coal.

So, just prior to his journey across the Atlantic to the New World, St. Nicholas had become a red

robed, white bearded figure who flew on a white horse to deliver gifts to good children overnight

during the Christmas Holy Days. In the early days of New York, the Dutch name “Sante Klaus”

was adopted by more recent English colonists as “Santa Claus”. The name stuck and immigrants

of many backgrounds adopted him and carried his name west as America was explored.

Washington Irving is credited with widening Santa Claus’ popularity and putting him

in a cart that flew through the air. The writings of Irving were certainly known by Henry

Livingston who penned the famous poem “An Account of a Visit from Saint Nicholas” that he

recited to his children one Christmas. Later, in 1822, the poem was published for the first time

in the Troy Sentinel. A professor of divinity, Dr Clement Moore, claimed authorship and a

controversy rages to this day over who actually wrote the poem. Regardless, the poem became

quite popular and did wonders for the reputation of Santa Claus. It gave us a sleigh pulled by

reindeer that all had names and reinforced the idea that Santa entered through the chimney. The

bishop’s robes were gone; replaced by a furry suit. Santa was now jolly and corpulent but small.

This thoroughly American rendition of St Nicholas was hugely popular and the

poem was (and is still) repeated every Christmas Eve in nearly every American home.

During the dark days of the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly published numerous stories about

Santa Claus illustrated by a German immigrant, Thomas Nast. The characteristics Santa

Claus were no longer left up to the imagination. Nast’s illustrations unified and solidified

popular ideas of what Santa looked like and how he acted. He was a “Jolly Old Elf”.

Today we think of Santa Claus as a much larger personage. This came about through an

advertising campaign conducted during the early days of popular color publications. The Coca-

Cola Company sponsored an ad campaign during Prohibition that featured Santa as a larger

version of the elf. Billboards and magazine images of this new Santa blazed their way into

the popular consciousness and have remained ever since. Santa’s favorite reindeer Rudolph

was introduced through another popular ad campaign staged by Montgomery Ward in 1939.

Through all the changes St. Nick has undergone, he remains in our hearts as our

companion at Christmas. Whether Saint or Santa, we can count on him to remind

us that Christmas is a time for giving and for children. Every effort must be made

to make a magical visit possible for every child.... especially the less fortunate.

Above all else, this is the legacy of Saint Nicholas. Please, give him a hand.

HOLIDAY WASTE BY THE NUMBERS The holiday season generates a lot of waste, and many things contribute to this excessof trash this time of year.

• Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfills after the holiday sea-son. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plasticbags can recycle those bags at appropriate receptacles.

• Four million tons of waste is attributed to shopping bags and wrapping paper. Recyclingpaper or looking for reusable items in which to wrap gifts can cut down on paper waste.

• Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each yearfor Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulchinstead of being sent to a landfill. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and plantingit after the holidays.

• Nearly 2.65 billion Christmas cards are sold and exchanged each year in the UnitedStates alone. This many cards can fill a football field 10 stories high. One less card sentper person can save roughly 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Electronic greetings are an-other way to save paper.

• If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it wouldsave enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

DID YOU KNOW?Though there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children ofall-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list ofmost popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction ofTickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became themust-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughedwhen users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paidfar beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukahand have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincar-nated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come theholiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, aswas Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo(2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmodolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of theintroduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports in-dicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousandsof dollars.

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT SPENDING LIMITSAs the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much moreexpensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves fi-nancially come the holiday season.

According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off thenew year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for therest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch themselvesthin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to makeshopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much eachfamily member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Discuss thetopic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long beforethe holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spendon gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then determine the aver-age, using that figure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday pur-chases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if youcannot afford to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tan-gible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggestgoing on vacation together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed ex-tended family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holidayseason, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make fora more peaceful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placingthe focus on family instead of shopping.

CAR CARE

IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER?(NAPSI)—Safety on the road is important all year round, but winter weather calls forextra caution behind the wheel to keep you and your passengers safe.

That’s why many auto safety experts including Discount Tire, the world’s largest tire andwheel retailer, urge motorists to keep road safety top of mind this winter and switch totires specifically designed for cold weather driving.

Winter tires are designed for driving in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. If there’sany chance you’ll encounter snow, ice, slush, black ice or wet roads on a consistentbasis, you should prepare your car for these conditions.

Often, drivers aren’t aware that commonly used all-season tires have a rubber compoundthat gradually hardens when temperatures dip below 45 degrees. When this happens, braking and turning are compromised as there is decreased road traction and less grip. It’s also important to note that snow and ice often pile up in the tire grooves and treadblocks on all-season tires, which can impact your vehicle’s performance.

Winter tires are made with higher-silica compounds. This allows the tire to deliver muchbetter traction, which reduces skidding and improves braking. In fact, in temperaturesbelow 45 degrees, winter tires can provide 25 to 50 percent more traction than all-seasontires. In addition, the tread block design includes thousands of very small interlockingslits—known as sipes—to provide extra road-biting edges for improved winter traction.

“Every aspect of a winter tire has been engineered to provide the best performance inwinter conditions and temperature fluctuations while maintaining traction on any surface,”said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “The winter tire advantage will maximize your safetyand provide peace of mind during the winter months.”

Five Tips for Winter Tire Safety1. Replace your all-season tires with winter tires for driving in temperatures of 45 degreesor below. Make sure to replace all four tires with winter tires to avoid an unsafe tractionmismatch.2. Don’t forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specif-ically for your set of winter tires will save money in the long run.3. Check tire inflation pressure regularly and don’t forget the spare. Underinflated orover-inflated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel con-sumption.4. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear de-velops.5. Make sure the tire shop that gets your tires ready for cold temperatures torques thelug nuts to the proper specifications for your vehicle.

For more facts about winter tire safety or to find a Discount Tire store, visit www.dis-counttire.com.

DID YOU KNOW?Many major auto manufacturers provide bumper-to-bumper factory warranties that expire once a car is threeyears old or exceeds 36,000 miles, and such milestonesare important figures for preowned vehicle shoppers toconsider before buying their next preowned vehicle. Whenbuying a car that's more than three years old or one thathas close to or more than 36,000 miles on its odometer, prospective buyers should ask for the vehicle's mainte-nance records before making a purchase. Since many ve-hicles need their first significant servicing somewherearound 40,000 miles, it's important for preowned vehiclebuyers to know what they're buying and just how soonthey might be on the hook for repairs after buying a vehi-cle. Buyers should avoid purchasing any vehicles withsuspect maintenance histories and may even be able tocite anticipated maintenance when negotiating the priceof the vehicle.
