INCREASED ACTIVITY CAN HELP PREVENT FALLS

(NAPSI)—The National Council on Aging reports that falls are the leading cause of in-juries for those 65 years of age and over. In fact, every 14 seconds, an older adult isseen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury—but you can protect your-self.

“People have always assumed falls are inevitable with aging, but we now know manyfalls are preventable through simple lifestyle changes, such as increased levels ofphysical activity,” said Robert Flippo, CEO of MobileHelp, a company that makes mo-bile Personal Emergency Response Systems (M-PERS). The systems give active sen-iors expedited emergency help in case of a fall.

He acknowledged knowing how much exercise to add to your day can be a challenge. To help seniors monitor their exercise progress, the company has introduced a newactivity-tracking application. The application uses the components of the company’sexisting M- PERS solution.

This means customers and caregivers can take advantage of the new health-focusedbenefits without having to invest in extra technology devices or learn how to use newsoftware.

To meet de-mand, the retailer already is stocking up on the popular characters and other productsbanking on the popularity of the film. If the special girl in your life is still enamored withall things “Frozen,” it’s a smart bet to start your holiday buying early this year.

• “Hunger Games” athletic items: Fans of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, be it the books, movies or both, are familiar with lead character Katniss’ prowess with a bow and arrow.Bows inspired by the movie are in demand and will appeal to both girls and boys testingtheir archery skills.

Minecraft is adigital building game that has enthralled gamers of all ages. Now Minecraft enthusiastscan recreate on-screen worlds in tangible Lego versions.

• Xeno: Xeno is a “friend-toy” that is neither robot nor doll, but an interactive pet. Madefrom nontoxic elastic material and including eight sensors, the creature is a moving, re-acting companion. Xeno even can dance to music. And parents will love that Xeno doesnot need to be taken for walks.

• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: On the heels of summer blockbuster inspired by thesegifted turtles, fans of the weapon-swinging shelled warriors will certainly want to surroundthemselves with all things turtle, so expect to see plenty of movie-inspired gifts on storeshelves this season.

OVERSTUFFED

ROAST TURKEY BREASTHOLIDAY WASTE BY

THE NUMBERSThe holiday season gener-ates a lot of waste, andmany things contribute tothis excess of trash thistime of year.

• Thousands of paper andplastic shopping bags endup in landfills after the holi-day season. Reusablecloth bags can limit theamount of bags tossedaway, and users of plasticbags can recycle thosebags at appropriate recep-tacles.

• Four million tons of wasteis attributed to shoppingbags and wrapping paper.Recycling paper or lookingfor reusable items in whichto wrap gifts can cut downon paper waste.

• Approximately 33 millionlive trees are cut down andsold in North America eachyear for Christmas. If youuse a live tree, be sure torecycle it so it can beturned into mulch instead ofbeing sent to a landfill. Oth-erwise, consider buying apotted tree and planting itafter the holidays.

• Nearly 2.65 billion Christ-mas cards are sold and ex-changed each year in theUnited States alone. Thismany cards can fill a foot-ball field 10 stories high. One less card sent per per-son can save roughly50,000 cubic yards ofpaper. Electronic greetingsare another way to savepaper.

• If everyone in Canadawrapped just three gifts inreused paper or gift bags, itwould save enough paperto cover 45,000 hockeyrinks.
