SGF Education Foundation Receives Donation SO. GLENS FALLS – The South Glens Falls Education Foundation is pleased to announce it received a $950 donation from the Stewart’s Holiday Match in support of the Kelsey’s Korner Project. This grant will be used towards the purchase of the books distributed to in- coming kindergarteners at this year’s Kindergarten Screening. The board of directors of the Foundation is grateful to both Stewart’s Shops and the individuals in the community who made this grant possible. The Kelsey’s Korner project was started in memory of Kelsey Eckert, a talented young artist who passed away in her first year of High School. This is the second year of providing a book for each preschooler attending Kindergarten Screening. The books have a positive message and include an application for a library card for the Crandall Library. Every Kindergarten classroom in the school district will receive a copy of the book as well. For more information about the South Glens Falls Education Foundation please visit - www.SGFEdfoundation.org (P) May Nature Programs GANSEVOORT – There are several programs taking place in the month of May to give people the chance to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of the Saratoga Sandplains in the springtime. Saturday, May 5: Bird Walk led by Rich Speidel at Camp Saratoga on Scout Road. This free program requires pre-registration. Please call Rich Speidel at (518) 623- 2587 to reserve your spot, as space is limited. Saturday, May 12 (rain date May 13): Trail workday where participants will work on the construction of the new Frawley trail and will involve carpentry and cutting brush. If you are interested in helping out, please call the park office at 450-0321 or send an email to [email protected] to receive more information. (P) ADK May Program GLENS FALLS – Join us on Wednesday, May 23, 7pm, at the Crandall Public Library, for another program with members of the Southern Adirondack Audubon Society. This pres- entation of the flora and fauna found in the Adirondacks was put together by ADK’s Edu- cation Department. This slide show will introduce some of the different communities and what can be found in them. The interrelationships of these plants and animals help to sustain the community as a whole. Following the ADK program, a few local shots of wildflowers and backyard birds will be used to test your knowledge. Come see if you’re smarter than a 4th grader (our daughter, Genevieve)! (P) Karner Blue Butterfly Walks GANSEVOORT – With the mild winter and early spring weather, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is beginning to schedule Karner blue butterfly walks at an earlier date this year than in the past. On Thursday, May 17 and again on Thursday, May 31, there will be a Karner Blue Butterfly Walk taking place beginning at 4pm on the trails at the Old Gick Farm off of Route 50. The endangered Karner blue butterfly has two broods every summer. To find out when the Karner blue butterfly has emerged this spring, check on the Preserve & Park’s website (www.wiltonpreserve.org). Pre-registration for this free walk is required by May 16 for the walk on May 17, and on May 30 for the walk on May 31. Mother's Day Ideas For The Budget-ConsciousIf you’re watching your pocketbook these days, as many people are,

you may be searching for affordable ways to celebrate Mom thisMother’s Day, May 13.The good news is thoughtfulness doesn’t need to cost a fortune. You can show you really care by taking the time to personalize yourMother’s Day activities and gifts. Here are some unique ideas thatmeet a wide range of budgets:FoodYou’ve probably been treated to many special home-cooked meals byMom. Now it’s time to reciprocate. Instead of taking mom out onMother’s Day, where many restaurants jack up their prices by offeringa prix-fixe menu, prepare a special meal yourself. Remember, the dayis about your mom, so plan the menu around all her favorite dishes.Offer to cook for her at her house so she doesn’t need to lift a finger. GiftsDon’t just opt for a trite box of chocolates or generic gift you find in

the first store you visit. These days, you can find personalized gifts thattruly match Mom’s unique personality.“You can surprise and delight someone most with a personalized gift,

since there is nothing more unique,” says Mariam Naficy, CEO ofMinted.com, an online stationery store. Personalized stationery sets make great affordable gifts for mom. Re-member, the stationery a woman uses speaks volumes about her. Findsomething just right by browsing the selection of colors and styles onan online stationery store. For example, Minted.com carries a wide se-lection of unique customizable designs. You might also consider giving the gift of self-expression with a per-sonalized journal. Make the journal truly hers before she ever sets pento paper by including meaningful photos and inscriptions on its coverand interior. FlowersFor a traditional flair, think flowers this Mother’s Day. But rather thancoughing up a pretty penny buying a standard issue store-boughtarrangement, take your mother on a nature walk to pick wildflowers. Not only will you get to spend a great spring day together outside, youcan create a unique bouquet at home using flowers she picked herself. When showing Mom you care this Mother’s Day, don’t let your budgethold you back. Thoughtfulness and thriftiness can go hand in hand tomake the day extra special.

Empty Bowls Become Vessels of Hope at Wilton Food Pantry Benefi t

Wilton, NY – More than $13,500 was raised at Saratoga County's fi rst offi cial Empty Bowls event, held to benefi t the Wilton Food Pantry (WFP). Nearly 250 people att ended the event, held Sunday, April 15, at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge 161. All who att ended chose a unique ceramic bowl, created and donated by Skidmore College’s ceramics students working under the direction of Professor Leslie Ferst. "Participating in Empty Bowls is a unique opportunity for my students to start the semester with a concrete goal and deadline. Th eir participation helps them understand how their actions and skills can extend beyond academic require-ments to benefi t the greater community. I welcome this opportunity to involve the students in such a benefi cial event," said Ferst. Att endees used their bowls to enjoy vegetable soup, chili, and rolls prepared by Skidmore’s Dining Services Chef Ben Niese and staff . Bowls were cleaned and re-distributed to guests courtesy of Boy Scout Troop 24. Th e bowls went home with guests as a memento of the event and the importance of making food available to those in need. In addition, participants had an opportunity to bid on 29 silent auction items and enjoy music performed by John and Orion Kribs with special Guest Doug Moody. "When participants use their Empty Bowls, they will be reminded that we have neighbors with empty bowls every day,” says Event Coordinator and WFP Board Member Dennis Towers. “Each bowl paid for by a guest allows the WFP to purchase more than 90 pounds of food through Regional Food Bank. Th e bowls will serve as a reminder that you helped to support residents in need of food sustenance. Please spread the word to help grow this annual event by inviting a family member or friend to att end next year’s Second Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser.” Th e WFP wishes to acknowledge the generosity of the following sponsors.Souper Hero Sponsors: Saratoga National Bank & Trust Company, Hannaford and Saratoga Veterinary Hospital, P.C. "Th e sponsors, media partners, community organizations, businesses, volunteers and att end-ees all united to help the WFP achieve its goal, increase awareness of food insecurity, and strengthen our community. We are extremely grateful.” Th e Wilton Food Pantry provides those in need with emergency food by working together with community mem-bers, leaders, and local businesses and organizations to gather, store and distribute goods, to off er compassionate help by respecting the dignity of each person served; and to inform and educate the community about the issue of hunger in the Town of Wilton, New York. Scarlett was abandoned, with her sister, at a campground and brought in to animal control by the ACO. After her time was up, Adirondack

Save-A-Stray rescued them before they were euthanized. Her sister was adopted and now Scarlett is looking for a forever home. She is

about 3 years old, UTD on shots and parasite control and is very gentle and sweet.

For further information on adopting her please call Adirondack Save A Stray at 518-654-6220.
