SARATOGA SPRINGS – Julie Slovic is the newly appointed Food Pro-gram & Financial Administrator for Franklin Community Center (FCC) re-sponsible for managing and developing its food pantry operations andassisting in the financial management of the Franklin Community Centerorganization. Ms. Slovic has Board, management and operating experi-ence with Saratoga ArtsFest and Accident Victims Funding. Prior to join-ing Franklin Community Center, Ms. Slovic was a Board Member andDirector of Budget & Operations at Saratoga ArtsFest (SAF), a not-for-profit organization supporting the arts in Saratoga Springs, New York.During her tenure, she was also Manager of Marketing & Production andChairperson for SAF’s major fundraiser, Studio Art Exhibit and StudentArt Exhibit. She recently received the 2014 Gallery of Honor Award inrecognition of her commitment and contributions to SAF. She remains onthe Board of Directors. Prior to SAF she was also the Co-founder & VicePresident of Finance for Accident Victims Funding where she successfullybuilt and managed a loan portfolio of over $5 million. In that capacity, Ms.Slovic was responsible for the development, marketing and managementof the operations. Ms. Slovic has a B.S. degree, magna cum laude, inStudio Art from the College of St. Rose. At St. Rose, she was awardedthe Service & Appreciation and Outstanding Senior Awards. Last week I wrote of the wondrous works of George Washington Carver. Equally amazing is the life of another horticultural genius, Luther Burbank. Burbank introduced over 1,000 plant varieties that had never been seen before. His achievements were so astounding that he was initially considered a fake by
Let’s start at the beginning. Luther Burbank was born in rural Massachusetts in 1849. In 1871, he used an inheritance from his father’s estate to buy a 17 acre farm in Lunenberg, Massachusetts where he took up vegetable farming for a living. An avid reader and forward thinker, Burbank was fully convinced by the writings of Charles Darwin and his theories on evolution. When one of the potato plants in his garden produced a seed ball (rare for potatoes), Burbank was astute enough to realize that it would contain
and found that it had produced 23 seeds. He grew the seeds hoping that he might come up with a new variety. As things turned out, one of the seeds produced a white skinned potato that was much larger than its red skinned parent. Burbank sold the potatoes he’d produced to a seedman from Marblehead for $150.
