Great (or Broad) Somerford,

1707 to 181 2.

Note.There are two volumes of Registers here prior to 1813.Volume I is a book, 9^ in. by 14 in., bound in leather boards,

containing 36 parchment and 20 paper leaves. The entries aremade only on the parchment leaves, those of Marriages being onpages 4, 6, 8, 20, 22, and 28. Eight of the leaves in the middle and

one at the end are blank. On the paper leaves are some ages ofcertain persons and other notes. The volume commences withthe following note :" Memorandum yt on ye 19th day of April1707, The Register book of ye parish of Broad Somerford wasburnt with ye house of Edward Cutts, ye Parish Clark : And allyt would enquire for any present age beyond yt time may applythemselves to ye Register Office in Sarum." The entries ofBaptisms, Marriages, and Burials are from that date to end of

1812, 1768 and 1812 respectively. On page 31 is a memorandumas to the bounds of the churchyard.

Volume II, 18 in. by 10 in., bound in leather boards, contains printedforms for Banns and Marriages. The Banns are entered, withsome few exceptions, from 1754 until 1781, the Marriages from

1754 to 1812.

Some extracts from the Bishop's Transcripts at Sahsbury for theperiod prior to 1707 are added.

These Transcripts have been made by the Rev. F. H. Manley,Rector of Great Somerford, and have been collated with theoriginals by himself. They are published with his sanction.

Note.This parish, before 1831 a Chapelry of Bishop's Cannings, has

had its own Registers since 1572.Volume I contains the entries of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials

from that time to 1685.

Volume II contains entries of Marriage from 1686 to 1758 only ; the

other entries are continued until 1770.

Volumes III, IV, and V are made up of the usual printed formsthen adopted for Marriage Registers. Volume III begins on

25 April 1754, repeating the Marriages entered in Volume II from

that date, and ends in 1768.

Volume IV contains the entries from 1768 to September 1782.Volume V contains those from October 1782 to the end of 1812.These transcripts have been made by Mr. J. H. Parry; they have

been collated with the originals by the Rev. W. Gardiner, B.D.,Vicar of Southbroom, and Rural Dean of Avebury (Cannings
