On 13th January 2007 the company celebrated its 135th year in existence since its establishment. In 1872 Ludwig Ulrich Neuffer set himself up as an independent manufacturer. Only 25 years old, he bought the 500-year-old company of Christian Schramm of Stuttgart, a glazing business.

The company subsequently provided windows for the City Hall, for the Königsbau (a prestigious building in Stuttgart), for the old castle, the Academy of Fine Arts and for the court´s servants building. Among the first contracts were works for the Würt-temberg Bank, the Royal Württemberg Railway Company, the city´s Office of Public Works and the Board of Works for the royal household; indeed Ludwig-Ulrich Neuffer was appointed Court Glazier on 24th February 1887.

In 1903 Oskar Neuffer joined the company after completing his period of apprenticeship as glazier.

Ludwig Neuffer was able to purchase the buildings belonging to the Wimpf car factory and the Diffenbacher customer saw mill in Rosenstrasse, Stuttgart in 1905; the latter became both offices and home.

After successful completion of his commercial training, Albert Neuffer joined the company in 1906.

On 23rd January 1907 the owners of the Neuffer Window Compa-ny were appointed Royal Court Glaziers.

Ludwig Neuffer patented his famous Reform Window under number DR 171244. This ground-breaking invention received roy-al patent for its design which, for the first time, allowed the inner and outer windows to be opened and closed simultaneously. The Neuffer Double-Window dominated the market. In 1913 Albert Neuffer followed this up with his Record System Neuffer double window which became extremely successful. However, the biggest breakthrough came with the sliding win-dow, System Neuffer, which was installed in hotels, banks, hos-pitals and schools. The omission of the inner window led to the production of the box construction system.

From 1934 onwards the company was involved in a large number of building projects both in the domestic market but also abroad. In 1943/44 the company produced standard windows for residen-tial and commercial properties as well as the so-called war-win-dow, with specifications from the war ministry. After the Second World War the company provided windows for such enterprises as Schwäbisch Hall regional hospital, Stuttgart´s Graf Zeppelin Hotel, the Königshof in Munich, Gerling company buildings in Cologne, BBC in Essen, Duisburg and Düsseldorf.

Rising demand for Neuffer windows meant that the production facilities, scattered due to the effects of the war, became too small and in 1954 the company was able to find more suitable premises in Stuttgart-Wangen with rail connection and near the port of Stuttgart and comprising some 6500 m². The foundation stone was laid in March 1955 and the company moved in the same year.

The company is still located at these premises and now operates as Gebrüder Neuffer Fensterfabrik GmbH.

FIVE GENERATIONS – ONE COMPANy

The company´s reputation was enhanced through Albert Neuffer Senior, not only in Germany but also increasingly abroad.

In 1966 Albert Junior took over management of the company. Apart from his successful management role he also held honorary offices in a number of professional organisations and was also vice president of the Württemberg Automobile Association.

At his side was his son, Jörg, who trained and gained experience at companies in Switzerland, Sweden, America and Finland. In 1963 Jörg Neuffer had the honour of being appointed to the exe-cutive committee of Young Glaziers.By 1972 the company had grown to employ 150 employees and the company focus was increasingly project-orientated.

In 1995 his son, Michael, joined the company after studying at the University of Cooperative Education in Stuttgart and intern-ships at a variety of companies. Since 2005 Michael´s brother, Philipp Neuffer, has been working in the company after his successful economics studies in London and Madrid.

Probably the largest, and certainly one of the most prestigious, contracts awarded to the company has been the manufacture, delivery and installation of wood-aluminium windows for the headquarters building of Daimler AG in Stuttgart.

Wood is a renewable material and, while one of the oldest of building materials, still commands a large share of the market for building products. No other material can quite combine the ecological qualities together with its ability to create a warm and comfortable living environment.

Compared to other building materials, wood windows require the least amount of energy when it comes to processing, finishing and disposal. They are part of a natural cycle and can be disposed of with no problems and can be recycled expediently.Wood windows are treated with environmentally-friendly, wa-ter-based paints and varnishes.

Today´s generation of wood windows provides excellent heat insulation as well as superb noise reduction qualities and have considerably reduced maintenance due to modern coating tech-nology systems.

THE RSG 10-YEAR GUARANTEE

Neuffer wood windows carry the RSG 10-year guarantee and are produced using an innovative and, in Europe, unique coating process according to the latest state-of-the-art in window technology and conform to all data sheets published by the German association of window and door manufacturers, the VFF.

Neuffer wood windows carrying the !0-year guarantee seal have only been coated with materials which have been completely tested and found to meet the require-ments of all European regulations.

Use this immense advantage and select RSG-quality win-dows with the 10-year guarantee.

Wood windows create a warm environment.

Wood-aluminium windows rrepresent the combination of two advantages: thermal insulation provided by wood together with weather protection afforded by aluminium. This creates a pro-duct which provides long durability thereby helping to save costs.

Weatherproof aluminium casing is an architectural element which can be exploited in a wide variety of colours. The wood frame provides stability, excellent heat insulation and gives the house a pleasant homely character.

The wide variety of profiles available means there is something for everyone: all conventi-onal window designs and styles of opening can be accommoda-ted using a variety of designs and profile widths.

We are pleased to offer four product lines: PLANO, ALU-PLUS, ECONORM and SOLA-PAR.

WOOD-ALUMINIUM WINDOWS

Wood-aluminium windows satisfy every need.

PLANOThe wood-aluminium window with flush surface exterior. This represents a further development of the ALUPLUS system with all its advantages. The flush exterior finish fulfils all the requi-rements demanded of modern architecture. This window system is finished with a square cornered interior profile to match the optical appearance of the external finish as standard.

ALUPLUSThe ALUPLUS wood and aluminium window is our tried and trus-ted standard window system. Its features include frame cladding, sash and overlap sealing – and external aluminium cladding is available as an extra – to achieve optimum sound and heat in-sulation. The protective outer shielding allows the use of woods such as cherry, maple, walnut etc which are normally suitable only for interior use to be employed with no problems. The wood-aluminium system ALUPLUS is available with both recessed and semi-recessed profiles.

ECONORM The energy-saving ECONORM window system completes the wood-aluminium assortment. This is a building element per-fect for so-called “passive house” construction, i.e. low-energy housing. It consists of high-insulating plastic profile between the outer aluminium shield and the wood window frame and achie-ves thermal insulation values as low as Uw = 0.8 W/m²K. The ECO-NORM system is available in two pleasing casing forms: classic and rounded.

SOLAPARThe wood-aluminium window with single surface exterior. The SOLAPAR system window stands out through having a slender frame design. This product is fitted as standard with sash and overlap sealing, and can be provided with exterior aluminium sealant as an optional extra. The insulation seal levels provide op-timum sound and heat insulation.

IDEAL4000

Security locking plate screwed into steel base

Modern windows of PVC with their excellent heat insulating and noise reducing qualities considerably improve the comfort of li-ving. The variety of colour and wood finishings available mean that they can be ideally designed to meet each individual need and they are durable and extremely easy to clean and maintain.

Thanks to the flexibility of thermo-plastic materials there are vir-tually no limits to the variety of shapes which can be achieved and it is also possible to use PVC windows in the renovation of older buildings.

Primarily taking the ever increasing demand for ever more ener-gy-efficient products into consideration, we provide trend-setting accents in the plastic frame sector with our systems. Long years of experience together with enormous technical expertise are ne-cessary in order to work with plastic so that the innate excellent properties of the materials can be exploited in full in the const-ruction of windows.

You, too, can benefit from the advantages gained by using our brand new bonding technology: the friction technique we em-ploy means that cracks caused by the cold are minimised there-by allowing less of the valuable room warmth to escape to the outside. Additional advantages of this new adhesive technology

INNOVATIVE BONDING TECHNOLOGy

UNION OF SASH AND PANEBonded panes have already become standard in the automobile industry. Using adhesive to fix the pane to the sash unit opens up completely new dimensions when it comes to classic window installation.

STABILITY- LIFE LONGThe weight of the glass pane is supported directly on the inner plastic support rail of the sash unit. Further reinforcement on the inside of the profile itself is not necessary.

MORE LIGHT – MORE SAFETYThe slimmer sash profile allows the entry of more light into the li-ving areas as well as providing more safety against housebreakers due to the circumferential adhesion.

THERMAL INSULATION – CONSIDERABLY IMPROVEDAs the steel reinforcement rail in the profile is no longer required this thermal bridge has been eliminated – thereby improving the thermal insulation achieved by up to 20% in the profile cross-section.

IDEAL8000K – THE INNOVATIVE 8-CHAMBER SySTEM WITH BONDING TECHNOLOGy IN 2 STyLES ENERGETO – THE INNOVATIVE ENERGy-SAVING WINDOW SySTEM WITH BONDING TECHNOLOGy

The IDEAL4000 system line of products represents a new genera-tion: for the first time it has been possible to develop a thermally insulating window while at the same time being economical – and without having to incorporate a metallic reinforcement in the inner core of the window system.

This has been made possible by combining two innovative Alu-plast Technologies:

Bonding inside – the adhesive technology in the sashPowerdur inside – the new plastic reinforcement in the frame profile

The cleverly designed interior construction of window frame and sash unit avoids the use of metallic heat bridges and attains, without requiring the use of special thermally-separated re-inforcements or foam insertion, thermal insulation values of Uf = 1.1 W/m²K.

The extremely favourable isothermal conduction means that va-luable energy can be conserved and under normal conditions any condensation build up can be prevented. The illustration clearly shows the warmth (red line) inside the room.

IDEAL SECURITy

Undesired “guests” do not usually gain entry by banging their head against a brick wall. They enter through the window. For the potential burglar a window usually provides them with the easiest point of access. That does not have to be so. Using the latest window technology you can keep the wolf from your door.

Glass-separation barsThese are the so-called “true divided win-dow bars”. In this style each insulation pane is separate. Every individual window section contains its own small insulation pane.

Vienna barsThe Vienna window bar consists of a di-stance spacer profile which does not, in fact, come into contact with the upper surface of the glass, but is simply applied from outside in such a way that it gives the appearance of real window bars without affecting any of the usual static load.

Helima window barsThe Helima window bar is a powder-coa-ted aluminium bar which is inserted bet-ween the panes. It looks much the same as a classic manually fitted real window bar.

2. Easy adjustment The activPilot window fitting series com-prises a new style of locking system based on a new octagonal bolt design. This is easily adjustable by hand and allows sim-ple regulation of the amount of opening. Joint clearance tolerances are largely com-pensated automatically.

3. High qualityThe high level of quality of the Winkhaus activPilot fittings is evidenced by the RAL lifetime testing. It provides you with the assurance that you have acquired a long-lasting, durable product.

4. Energy savingThe multi-position ventilation opening al-lows the window to be tilted into a wide va-riety of positions thereby enabling a quick, but easily adjusted, ventilation setting. Per-manent airing is possible without a signifi-cant loss in energy. That protects not only your health, but also your wallet.

5. Attractive designThe attractive design of the fitting ele-ments gives the window that little so-mething extra and makes it stand out positively from the standard mass-market products on offer. Improve the value of your windows with Winkhaus activPilot

1. Individual safetyThe modern modular frame concept al-lows individual choice regarding safety. The high quality for locks and hinges is ba-cked up by the RAL quality seal of appro-val. It does not take a lot of effort to take more safety steps and class WK II may be achieved depending on the system chosen.

Page 15: Windows Doors Germany

Seal tests – driving rain and draught exclu-sion The weatherproofing of a window is de-pendent on the combination and finishing of profile, seals and fittings. Testing the complete system ensures a constant high quality of the product.

Welding temperature checksA temperature of 250°C is required when welding the corner sections of window sash and frame structures. Manual testing of the welding temperature, together with temperature control via the PC are both carried out. These, along with checks of the Teflon coatings guarantee the opti-mal quality of the corner joints.

Window corner testingThe quality of the PVC corner welds is re-gularly carried out using the corner unit tester. Depending on the profile being used each corner must be able to with-stand a force of at least 6560 N.

RESISTANCE CLASS II TEST – BURGLAR PREVENTION

REGULAR QUALITy CHECKS

Pessure cyclinder – according to DIN V ENV 1628This static stress test enables the mechanical resistance of the complete window unit to be established.

By exerting a force of 3000N and measuring any displacement it is possible to test the locking mechanism, the profile system and the glass connection joints.

Sandbag– according to DIN V ENV 1629 The dynamic stress test using a sandbag simulates a person ki-cking or shoulder charging the door or window.

The weakest points of a window are exposed to force. The usual procedure is to apply force to the joints so that the test is basically a means of ensuring the strain of the glass fixture.

Manual attack – according to DIN V ENV 1630 This testing procedure is designed to calculate the resistance to counter manual burglary attempts, such as opening the window with simple tools such as screwdriver, pliers or wedge tool.

The test is carried out on two identical assemblies. Initially a weak-point analysis is carried out on the first window in order to determine the points of attack for the main test. Then the second window is used for the main test in which the window is attacked and attempts made to open it in a period of 3 minutes by focus-sing on the weakest areas established in the initial analysis.

It was difficult, if not virtually impossible, to make early win-dows absolutely airtight, consequently there was always a certain amount of natural air circulation which actually provided a drying of any damp and made for a pleasant living environment. Older windows still provide this air circulation, although often undesi-red through unpleasant draughts caused by joints not being airtight. In order to reduce heating costs, draughts and the ef-fects of noise modern windows are constructed in order to meet today´s requirements. This air permeability is limited according to the German Ordinance on Thermal Insulation: The joints in the thermal transmission surrounding surfaces must be permanently sealed and not susceptible to joint permeability. The characteris-tic value for air circulation of a window is the permeability coef-ficient, or a-value (DIN 18 055). Modern windows have an a-value lower than 1.0. These new windows are both individually sealed as well as airtight to their fittings so that no natural air circulation can take place. Insufficient ventilation can adversely affect one´s health. Increased relative humidity can adversely affect the buil-ding infrastructure if not dealt with quickly.

The resulting high levels of damp (and build up of mould) and their unpleasant side effects are easily avoidable.

The aim of ventilation is to secure a feeling of wellness and avoid any danger to people or property.

The excellent sealing properties of modern windows require a systematic and suitable ventilation strategy. On the other hand, this ventilation leads to energy (i.e. heat) loss during periods of heating. This heat / energy loss is more important in relation to the efficiency of the thermal insulation of the building´s exterior surfaces.

Systematic ventilation planning based on individual requirements must be achieved which aims to keep the heat losses low while at the same time providing adequate airing.

We are able to provide our customers with three different venti-lation systems depending on their individual building situation:

Regelair Air permeability 6,5 m³/hAeromat Air permeability 120 m³/hAutopilot Comfort Air permeability depends on size of sash

Where it is not possible or not desired to make use of these tech-nological advances then we recommend ventilating the room(s) in the following way in order to keep energy costs low:

Each room should be aired for 10 to 15 minutes every mor-ning (especially the bedroom) Air each room again 3 or 4 times during the day (depending on humidity)Do not tilt the windows, but open fully; this guarantees the maximum air exchange in the shortest period of timeTurn off the heating while windows are openDo not let the room temperature fall below 15°C as this incre-ases the amount of humidity the air in the room can absorb

If sufficient ventilation is provided then energy costs will be saved with modern window technology and a pleasant living environ-ment is achieved.

ROLLER SHUTTERSWhether integrated or mounted Schlotterer rollcom roller shutters provide all the possi-ble advantages which modern roller shutter technology can offer. For those who choose roller shutters primarily for their shade and privacy features, the excellent properties in areas of sound reduction, particularly of external sounds and street noise, will not go un-noticed. When the temperature begins to rise in summer these blinds provide a pleasant room climate, while during cold winter nights their good insulation properties help to minimise the energy loss in the area of the window.

Furthermore, shutters increase the safety factor all round the house whether this comes in the form of protection against physical damage from balls, stones or other objects, insect protection or even against other undesired guests.

The sun protection roller blind s_onro® combines the advantages of a blind with a roller shutter. It allows more light into the room but at the same time reduces the amount of direct sunlight. The s_onro® redefines the term room climate.

s_onro® recieved the “if Product Design Award 2006” for its attractive and delicate ap-pearance. It creates a room aesthetic full of lightness and transparency.

Insect protection screen – no chance for bugs! Simply roll down the fine-weave, almost transparent insect screen as and when required, whether during the day or at night so that even with the window completely open there will be no disturbing your sweet dreams by unwelcome flying visitors.

The practical and easy-to-operate insect screen stands out with its elegant design, first class quality and simple operation.

INSTALLATIONRAL INSTALLATION BY OUR OWN EXPERTSOur Service Technicians have more than the average experience in dismantling and installing windows. We have a healthy balan-ce of young and experienced fitters. Our team from the techno-logy department as well as all of our service technicians regularly take part in training courses. DISMANTLING OLD BUILDINGSExisting windows in older properties are carefully sawn into pie-ces using a sabre saw (like a jigsaw but more powerful) without causing any damage to the infrastructure. The inner plaster, exte-rior plasterwork, any wall tiles and sills are left undamaged. After thorough cleaning of the working area, installation of the new window can begin.

ASSEMBLY IN OLD BUILDINGS The windows are mounted correctly horizontally and vertically. The distances of the mounting points to existing brickwork are determined and will depend on the window system chosen (wood, PVC or aluminium).

The position of the new window will largely be determined by the existing window. In order to seal the window effectively it is usually necessary to insert a high-quality foil under the existing plasterwork so some of this may need to be removed in order to fix it effectively into the brickwork. For this reason sealing is carried out both inside and outside with a permanently elastic sealant.

ASSEMBLY IN NEW BUILDINGSThe windows are mounted correctly horizontally and vertically. The distances of the mounting points to existing brickwork are determined and will depend on the window system chosen. Vari-ous installation methods are possible in new buildings. Even the position of the window within the wall can be optimised in order to achieve optimum thermal insulation.

The internal sealing is usually carried out using a vapour diffusi-on-proof sheeting. This sheeting can be used by subsequent wor-kers, e.g. the plasterer, as base.

DISPOSAL OF OLD WINDOWSWithin Germany we only work together with approved compa-nies and members of the German Association of Steel Recycling and Disposal e.V. in order that materials for waste disposal are correctly disposed of or recycled according to national regulati-ons.

SEALINGThe three insulation levels outer, central and inner are subject to the following basic measures:

The inner insulation separates the room from the external envi-ronment and must be vapour-diffusion proof. The central insulation barrier between frame and wall must be completely filled with thermal insulating material. The outer insulation serves as weatherproofing level and must be watertight against driving rain at all times and also be permeable for vapour diffusion.

INSULATION MATERIALS OF THE 3 LEVELSThe inner insulation can be carried out with vapour proof shee-ting or, as is often used in older properties, a permanently elastic sheeting material. The central layer can either be executed using 1-component PU-foam or an alternative filler such as cotton fibre. The outer layer can comprise pre-compressed insulation strips or a vapour-permeable sheeting.

Insulation of the window presents an important and effective protection against any subsequent damage to the building infra-structure. Windows must be insulated according to modern buil-ding rules and regulations. There is one basic rule: internally more insulation than externally. The Illbruck insulation system covers all three insulation layers simultaneously with Illbruck Trioplex. We employ this insulation system almost entirely across our new pro-perty projects. This system can be used in old buildings where it is possible to prepare the existing stonework appropriately.
