    The Heartbeat of God

On Mondays, we have had a small, but lively group

discuss "The Heartbeat of God: Finding the Sacred in

the Middle of E verything". It is the third book written

by our presiding bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori. The book

discuses a broad range of issues from poverty, hunger,

healthcare, the environment and many more. She gives

theological basis as to why these issues matter and quotes

Scripture throughout the book. The "heartbeat" refers togiving life, that is, making God's wo rds into action; giving

"life blood" and hope wh ere it is needed. She emphasizes on

connectiveness; as a person of science and faith she explains

the connection between the two fields as both having the

common ground of social responsibility. She stresses that we

are ALL connected. An oil spill in the south affects us here.

The homeless man and the immigrant wom an are our brother

and sister, and it is our Christian duty, as dictated in our

Baptismal Covenant , to strive for justice for these human

beings. When I first typed the name of the book, I made an

error and typed, "Finding the Scared...." Freudian slip?

Maybe so. But then I started thinking that its actually not faroff from the book's message. We are called to find the scared-

the helpless and the needy and make a difference, however

small. She cites several examples that she has seen in her

extensive travels, such as a community garden grown by a

small church, and the young girl who started a pet food drive

because the economy was taking a toll on pets and their

owners. Our Monday night group members happened to be

also members of the Women's Outreach Wing. This book was

a great inspiration to keep to good works of WOW going and

even triggered some new ideas for outreach.

Good timing, or serendipity, would play a part during this

forum. I had received word that B ishop Katharine was visiting

our diocese! So we (Stacey and Cheri) ventured to see her at

St. Peter's Church in Philadelphias Olde City section on

    November 13th.

She was celebrant at the 11am Holy Eucharist, part of the church's 250th anniversary

observance. Wearing red vestments- the color for the Holy Spirit, she opened her sermon in a

way she often does: she names the different countries in which the Episcopal Chu rch is present

and says she is bringing greetings from them to us. "They pray for you and I ask that you pray

for them", she says- another example of connectedness. Her sermon also addressed injustice,

poverty, unhealthiness- themes that are present in the book. It was a b lessing to hear her wordsin person. It was also meaningful when we all renewed our baptismal vows with her. An even

bigger blessing was the chance to tell her afterwards about our forum with her book. She said

she was honored. It was an hon or for me just to be in her presence- and a good "photo-op" too!

It was a blessed early Christmas gift for me. It was also throughly enjoyable to lead the book

forum and I h ope to have another opportunity to lead another. A big thanks goes to those who

participated! Hope everyone has a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!

    St. Lukes Blanket Drive Update

A very special note of thanks to everyone at

St. Lukes who donated blankets, caps, and

prayer shawls for the cancer patients at Aria

Cancer Center on Knights Road in

Philadelphia. We collected a total of 44 fleece

blankets, 5 woolen caps, and 3 prayer shawls!

On Friday, November 11 , Nancy Orlando andth

I donated these items to Aria Cancer center.

Our contact person was Patricia McDonough, who is a radiation and oncology assistant at

the cancer center. We made the donation in

honor of Joyce Glenn. Patricia McDonough

was very appreciative and deeply mo ved by

our donation. She remembered Joyce and told

us how Joyce touched her life through her

    optimistic attitude and generous personality.

Once again, thanks to everyone who

participated in making the lives of cancer

patients a little more comfortable as they

receive their treatments. Hopefully, we will

have another blanket drive sometime in the

    new year.
