2 WINNER’S FRIEND

Phew, we’ve just come to the end of another brilliantissue. It’s not easy finding this many amazingcompetitions every month! Luckily our dedicated team

of comp hunters have done us proud and sourced someamazing prizes that YOU could be taking home. You’re alucky bunch!

It’s been wonderful to hear from so many enthusiastic newcompers who are still holding out for their first win. What willit be? Many compers who are just starting out find themselvesentering every competition they see! The more competitionsyou enter, the more chance you have of winning, but youcould find yourself receiving some very unusual items in yourpostbox. I had this surprise this week! I received an e-mail totell me that I had won a year’s supply of Carmex lip balmfrom a top UK beauty website. It’s not something I really use,but it will certainly provide a lot of stocking fillers thisChristmas!

So what is the strangest prize you’ve won? Have you gottenhome to find a year’s supply of lime pickle on your doorstep?Or perhaps you found yourself with a goodie bag of dogtreats… despite the fact you have no dog to treat with them.Whatever your strangest win has been, I want to hear about it.We’ll be publishing the best entries in the next issue ofWinner’s Friend, and every one that we publish will earn you£10! Drop me a line at [email protected] withyour tales of the weird and wonderful (pictures are greatly

appreciated!) or write a letter to the usual address. Look outnext month to see if your big win is featured!

This issue of Winner’s Friend is packed with prizes that most ofus could never dream of experiencing. How do you fancytesting yourself to your limits by attempting to scale Everest?Visit pXX for your chance to win. Personally, the idea ofscaling the world’s highest peak exhausts me enough to need aholiday… I quite fancy the idea of relaxing on the snow-whitebeaches of the Caribbean to recover. I’ll be entering thecompetition on page 26 to Barbados in the hope of makingthat dream a reality!

If you’ve already had a big holiday this year, perhaps you justfancy a few days away to relax and unwind. Our spa breaks onpage 16 offer plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind, both at home and abroad. You could be sipping Champagnein an exclusive Devonshire hideaway, or even enjoyingluxurious treatments in a five-star hotel in Istanbul. Thebiggest challenge will be choosing who to take with you – mayI suggest me?

Right, I’m off to put the kettle on, assemble my postcards, fire up my laptop, grab my mobile phone and hopefully makethis my biggest winning month so far!

Winning isn’t everything… but we certainly want to!What have you won?

Living likeJames Bondin theBahamasOn the tube on the way towork Paul saw a competitionin the free paper Metro for aholiday worth... £85,000! Itsounded absolutely amazing...first class flights to Miami, aprivate jet transfer to theBahamas and then sevennights in the famous, exclusive“Bridge Suite” at the Atlantisresort on Paradise Island. It isthe most expensive suite in theworld.

Of course, Paul enteredimmediately – and got hisgirlfriend to enter, too. Abouta week later he was called bysomeone from the paper. “Assoon as I heard the wordMetro,” Paul told me, “Iremembered the comp andasked if I’d won. When theguy said yes I was literallyspeechless!”

The Bridge Suite has 10 roomsover 5,000 square feet andcosts $25,000 per night! It’susually only used by American

megastars like Michael Jacksonand Michael Jordan or by richArab royals. Paul and hisgirlfriend had the whole thingto themselves.

The reality only began to sinkin as their butler (he wasincluded in the prize) showedthem around the resort andthey saw the sheer scale of it.Underground they have theworld’s largest aquarium whichuses sea water and outside theworld’s biggest water park. Aspart of the prize, Paul and hisgirlfriend got to try a differentactivity every day and weregiven the full VIP treatment. One day they had five hoursof pampering in their spa; theycould hardly walk as they leftas they were so relaxed. Theyalso spent a day on anAmerica’s Cup yacht and a dayswimming with dolphins.

After Paul won this amazingholiday, lots of his friendshave started comping too (areyou surprised?) as they nowrealise people really do win.Since he started comping Paulhas won more brilliant prizes, including tickets to the 2006World Cup – with a private jetto Frankfurt and a day playingfootball on the WembleyStadium pitch (he even scoreda goal).

9PRIZE-WINNING STORY

An £8,000honeymoonin an islandparadiseFor Sarah Mcavoy, spending acouple of hours thinking up a15-word tie-breaker was thebest investment she evermade...

“We knew we couldn’t afford ahoneymoon so that was out ofthe question,” says Sarah.“Then I saw a competition inBrides magazine to win aweek’s holiday on the island ofBarbuda, and had to enter.”The holiday was worth £8,000– three times their weddingbudget.

She spent a couple of hoursthinking of a slogan for thetie-breaker, and finally cameup with... “skinnydipping withmy handsome groom, in thebeautiful blue lagoon, wouldbe the perfect honeymoon”.It was a few weeks aftersending in her tie-breakerentry that Sarah got a phonecall from the promoters atBrides magazine, and was toldshe had won first prize and

would be flying over toBarbuda for her honeymoon. She couldn’t believe it, norcould her fiancé.

Sarah and her husband had atruly amazing time in Barbuda. The island is beautiful, andwhat more could you want onyour honeymoon thanunspoiled paradise? Therewere only four couples on theexcusive island resort, so theyhad the beach pretty much tothemselves. “It was like beingon our own exotic island.”

Inside the resort they weretreated like royalty, with aprivate butler attending totheir every need. As part ofthe prize, the sponsorsarranged a romantic beachpicnic in a secluded cove justoff the island.

“We used the mobile phone toask for some extra water,”laughs Sarah. “A little boatcame out especially with somemore bottles of water for us -we couldn’t believe howfriendly, polite andprofessional all the staffwere.” This prize was a trip ofa lifetime, they didn’t want toleave the island. “I canhonestly say it was the perfectstart to married life,” saysSarah.

The ride ofmy lifeI was sitting watchingWimbledon one eveningtowards the end of June whenthe phone rang. My sonanswered the phone and a ladyfrom ING bank asked for me.“Here we go again, anothersales call,” I thought, butinstead of telling my son tosay I was busy, like I’dnormally do, I took the call.Thank goodness I did. Thelady was the bearer offantastic news. I had won aRenault Clio from ING bankin a Times Online promotion.I’m surprised you couldn’thear my screams all the way toLondon! She told me therewere six cars being given away, and they had had 10,000entries to the competition.

I picked up my gorgeous Clioin September at a presentationin London. Not only did theygive me the car but ING alsopaid my travel down toLondon and offered to pay fora night in a hotel if I wantedit.

The presentation was fabulous. It took place at the Renaultdealership in West Londonwhere the six prize cars werekept under wraps. My husbandand I met the other winners, chatted to ING staff andphotographers, who weremarvellous, and enjoyed drinksand canapés while waiting forthe unveiling of our lovelycars. I was like a kid in a sweetshop – I just couldn’t wait tosee my car, and kept trying topeek under the covers at theregistration numbers to seewhich car was mine!

Are you a big winner?Have you had a big win lately? A life-changing holiday, a brandnew car or perhaps something bigger? Why not tell us about it?We’ll pay £50 for every story we feature. Just e-mail me withdetails at [email protected] or write to WinningStories, Winner’s Friend, Oxfordshire Press Ltd, Unit 1D,Cherwell Business Village, Southam Road, Banbury, OX16 2SD.

What are they?Lowest unique bid competitions haverecently become very popular and thepremise is simple – you send in (usuallyby text message) a bid for the prize. They're very popular on the radio, wherethey can keep constantly updating you onhow the comp is going! Whoever texts inwith the lowest unique bid, i.e. thesmallest value that nobody else hasthought to send in, wins the prize.Sometimes you are asked to pay yourbid... but who minds paying £2.50 for anew car?

What's the catch?Well... entry can be expensive. A lot ofcomps tempt you in with a free initialbid. So you have a good think and send itin. Instantly you get a message back, letting you know whether your bid hasbeen successful. You might find out thatyou have the lowest bid but it's notunique or that your bid is unique but notthe lowest. You are invited to try again...but this time your text will be charged at£1.50.

It's very easy to get hooked, especiallywhen you have instant feedback on yourchances of winning. Some competitionswill not limit the number of entries youmake – probably because of the massiveprofit they are making! However, limitsare sometimes imposed to stop peopleguaranteeing themselves a win.

For example, say the prize is a car valuedat £30,000. If you sent in every valuebetween 1p and £10, you would still haveonly spent £1,500 – a small fraction ofthe price of the prize! However, wecertainly don't endorse this practice andmost organisers will cancel all bids if theysuspect this is happening.

So is it a scam?Well, no. There is a prize to win and itwill go to the lowest unique bidder. Thekey is not to get carried away with yourbidding, no matter how many temptingmessages the promoter will send, urgingyou to bid again! Each competition willhave one lucky winner, but be sure to

check the terms and conditions beforeentering so you know how much each ofyour entries are costing...

We spoke to a member of the Winner'sFriend staff about their experiences oflowest unique bid competitions...

Stephanie Bradley, one of ourdedicated team ofcomp collectors, tells us about herexperience of arecent radiocompetition...

"As is habitual with most compers, I quicklyturned my attention to the radio as thestation broadcasted details of theircompetition of the day. I was intrigued bythe concept of the 'lowest unique bid wins'and with a Nintendo Wii up for grabs whowouldn't feel their comping juices start toflow?

All I had to do was think of a ridiculouslylow amount, in pence, that I could bid bytext and providing no one else had come upwith that figure, I would be the luckyrecipient of the much coveted console.Easy! My first attempt was unsuccessful;you'd be surprised how many people willspontaneously submit 163 pence, 36 to beexact! Feeling that I possessed someoriginality and could do better, I triedagain... this time only s17 other bidders hadthought the same. Spurred on by what Ithought of as increasing odds, I submittedanother bid and to my delight no otherbidders had come up with this sum! However, it was not the lowest unique bidso back to the drawing board. By now theadrenalin was pumping and I was feeling the

euphoria of a near win building, I no longerjust wanted the Nintendo Wii, I needed it!Several unsuccessful bids later, and thelingering feeling of nausea that comes withsending umpteen text messages at £1.50 ago, I received a text from the radio stationstating that I had exceeded the maximumnumber of bids permitted for that day butgenerously added that I was more thanwelcome to try again tomorrow. I wasbeing cut off. I didn't try again thefollowing day, not because I had learned avaluable lesson but because I had depletedmy phone credit with my bidding activityand therefore could not text or phoneanyone! No Nintendo-toting postie, nocredit on my phone and the distinct feelingof failure hanging in the air.

In my experience this method of compingis a precarious one. I would probably notbuy a raffle ticket to enter a competition for£15 and yet it seemed so easy to spend themoney when caught up in the excitement ofa reverse auction. If you are the level-headed type who is able to keep within yourlimits, then this is a fun way to dabble withLady Luck. However, if, like me, you can'tresist upping the ante it might be safer toavoid them completely. In hindsight thisseems a little more like gambling thancomping and certainly left me feelingfoolish and out of pocket. I never foundout what the lowest unique bid was; it wasprobably for the best as I'm sure it wouldseem really obvious now..."

19DALLIMORE DIARIES

Iknow I’m always saying localnewspaper comps are worth entering– and I think this is especially so

when they feature a lot of comps in oneissue. At the end of June I entered fiftycomps on separate entry forms in onelocal paper. This was very timeconsuming! It involved looking throughthe newspaper at all the adverts to findout the answer to each of the 50questions, filling in each EF, cutting themout, addressing 50 envelopes with theindividual title of each comp and thenputting each EF into the correctenvelope. The latter needed the mostconcentration – I dreaded getting to theend to find the last EF and addressedenvelope did not match up! Thankfully, that did not happen. I hand deliveredthem all to the newspaper office – wherethere was a huge box in reception justfor the competition entries. Yes, it was alot of effort, but they run thispromotion annually and I’ve won a prizeeach year for several years now – so Ithink it’s worth it! But a month on I’dheard nothing. Then a few days laterwhilst I was out, there was a BT1571alert on my mobile, saying that there wasa message on our landline. I rang in tohear it – and yes, it was from the lady atthe newspaper office to tell me that I’dwon a prize. She didn’t say what, so Ieagerly phoned her as soon as I arrivedhome. I’d won a pair of Moshulusandals from a local shoe shop. Brilliant!Funnily enough, I won the same prize inthat comp two years ago (last year I wonan iron) and they are lovely sandals, so Ishall be delighted to choose another pair,in a different colour. They are aware atthe newspaper office that some people(and not just me!) do enter and win eachor most years (and other comps in the in

paper in between) and they don’t seem tomind that at all. So do enter the compsin your local papers!

Still on the subject of local newspapercomps – many local papers do havewebsites, and many of their comps canbe entered online. Some do not allowonline entries but tell you how to enterby postcard, phone or text, and somesimply tell you what comps are in theirnewspaper that week and then you needto buy the paper for the details - but thatis useful if you only want to buy thepaper when there is a comp in it youwant to enter. A Google search for yourlocal papers should come up with theirwebsites. I’ve won prizes from localpaper comps I’ve entered online. A lotof local paper comp prizes are tickets tovarious attractions in and around the areawhich are well worth doing if you likegetting out and about.

Local newspapers usually have compswith fairly small prizes. But we all dreamof winning cash, and lately compsoffering cash prizes have been on theTV. Weekday programmes GMTV, ThisMorning, Loose Women, Dickinson’s RealDeal and Golden Balls have all had compswith good cash prizes over the last fewmonths, some have had other greatprizes too, such as cars and holidays, some have run comps every weekdayeach week. Some weekend programmeshave also had comps – Who Dares Sings, for instance. And whenever there’s beena F1 Grand Prix there’s been a GrandPrix comp. What’s always the same foreach of these ITV comps is that thecomp question is only ever given on theTV programme and never repeated onthe website. So yes, they do get lots of

entries but not as many as they would ifthe questions were also available online.Phone and text entries do cost £1 perentry (plus standard rate for texts) so Idon’t think many people would want tomake many entries this way, althoughmulti entries are usually allowed. Onlineentries are free, and again multi entriesare allowed – and the closing date forweb entries is usually four days after theprogramme. The exact number of entriespermitted for each method does vary foreach programme, but it is stated in theT&Cs online; go to http://www.itv.com/Termsandconditions/Competitionsandvotes/default.html for a list of ITV show-related comps, click on any one to findout the T&Cs, including full details ofeach prize. To look for the online entrypages, on the T&Cs page above, click onLifestyle, or Games then Game shows, click on the name of the show you arelooking for – then look for competitionin the menu on the left-hand side. Notall programmes have competitions, andthose that currently run them may not berunning them throughout the year. But,like me, be on the lookout for new ordifferent programmes with comps in thefuture. Let me know if YOU win a prizefrom this type of TV programme comp!

Good Luck with your entries.

22 MARTIN’S TIE-BREAKER CLINIC

I’m just back fromtown, where Ienjoyed a lovely

lunch with my oldcomping pal, Irene.Irene, like me, has beenentering comps foraround 30 years ormore and it was great

to catch up. We swapped anecdotes, andentry forms, and we wallowed in nostalgiaabout the good old days when there wereentry forms everywhere, and comps reallywere about skill and judgement, and notjust the free prize draws that seem toproliferate these days. When I begancomping in the 1970s I often spent mylunch hour in the local library looking upanswers to unusual comp questions, orworking on tiebreakers by using the Roget’sThesaurus or the Walkers Rhyming Dictionary.Nowadays, of course, most comps seem tobe simple draws with no element of skillwhatsoever.

Do you have a comping pal? I think it isessential that we do not become too insularin our comping activities. It is all too easyto comp in isolation, but I would stronglyrecommend that you all bounce your ideasoff a comping pal, and use your friend toswap entry forms, and simply buoy eachother up when that inevitable long losingspell hits you. It’s also a good idea to join alocal comping club if you can. There aredozens all over the country so there isbound to be one near you. I know of suchclubs in Boston, Chester, Leeds, Wigan,Nottingham, London, Bath, Jersey, Oxford,Reading and Swindon and there are plentymore up and down the country. Check outyour local library for information. If there

isn’t one, then why not set up your own?You only need four or five people to startwith, you’ll soon find the numbers growfrom there. You can meet up once a montheither in a pub or a church hall, or eventake turns in hosting the meeting in yourown homes. I guarantee that comping witha few like-minded pals beats comping inisolation any day.

Did you see the recent results for theDomestos and Cif competiton? Thewinning tie-breakers have just beenreleased. Entrants had to complete the leadin phrase... “ I need to kit out my kitchenbecause...”

There were five washing machines andtumble dryers to be won, with 10 laundrykits for the runners up. The interestingpoint to note is that every single winnermentioned at least two of the promoter’snames in their tie-breaker. That isDomestos, Cif or Bosch.

It is highly likely that the judges were toldto only select winners that mentioned thepromoters; it is too much of a coincidenceto believe otherwise. So do remember tomention the promoter in future slogans ifyou want to be considered for a prize.Let’s take a closer look at some of thosetop five winners and see what other tips wecan glean from them.

“Spring is just around the corner so I amspringing into action using Domestos andCif.”

“What better incentive to have a springclean? With Cif and Domestos – a kitchensupreme.”

“Cif – Domestos effectiveness ensuressuccessful cleaning with minimum stress.”

“Kitchen, bathroom, floor and wall, Cifand Domestos spring clean them all.”

“ It sure needs a lift – can be clean in a Jifwith Domestos and Cif.”

Every entrant mentioned spring or spring-cleaning or clean, so this was obviouslyanother key word, which the judges wereon the lookout for. Remember this was notpart of the lead in, but must have beenapparent on the competiton entry form, soit pays to look closely at exactly what it isthat the judges are looking for.Although some of the winners used rhymeto good advantage, it seems that thecommon thread with this quintet is thatthey are all honest statements, rather thancatchy jingles. Maybe sometimes we are allguilty of being just a little too clever; whenall the promoters are really looking for arejust a few worthy words. So to summarise, mention the promoter, look out for the key words, and be honest, and maybe next time it will be your nameon the winner’s lists.

Please do remember to keep those compingqueries coming in to me here at Winner’sFriend, and if you want help with yourtiebreakers, all you have to do is ask.Contact me at [email protected], orat the usual Winner’s Friend address.

27COMPER’S NEWS BOARD

The buzz about click&buy

Many compers rejoice when they see aweb entry route on a competition –an opportunity to enter a top

competition for free, with just a few clicks ontheir mouse! Sadly, the days of free web entrymight be coming to an end. Many websites arenow utilizing the services of BT click&buy tocharge compers for their web entries.

How does it work?

In a nutshell, BT click&buy is a securepayment system used by a number ofwebsites to handle your transactions. It has

been available for eight years, but the advent ofbroadband internet in more homes has made ita lot more widely publicized of late. Usersregister online for free and then can makesecure payments to over 7,000 merchantsworldwide.

You will be invoiced each month for theservices you have used, and payment can bemade by credit card or direct debit. You canalso 'top up' your account at Payzone outletsnationwide.

Is it safe?

Yes! This is a well-established serviceand BT has gone to great lengths tokeep your information secure. As well

as a password, you can secure your accountwith a personalised security question. Allonline transactions are also carried out over anencrypted connection.

Are there advantages tousing click&buy to entercomps?

Well, it depends. Free web entry is ofcourse preferable, but if you onlyhave access to a mobile phone, calls

to premium rate lines can be extortionate. Atleast with BT click&buy you will know exactlyhow much your entry is costing you before youdo it. Always check the cost of other methods.

Compers’ News BoardCompers’ News Board

Dear Kelly,

Ihave know been comping for well over thirtyyears and in that time I have won manyvaluable and amazing prizes. Everything from

holiday and theatre tickets to gift vouchers andbooks and CDs have landed on my mat during thattime.

I still think my greatest ever prize was a bouquet offlowers every week for a whole year which I wonin a local newspaper competition when I was astudent in London. That constant supply of freshblooms certainly gave me an advantage with thegirls on my course and a few bunches in thevacation for my long-suffering mum ensured that shedid all my dirty washing when I came home for theweekend!

Harvey Salmon, Suffolk

Ed: Thanks for your e-mail Harvey, it certainly made us smile. I wonder what otherreaders would class as their favourite win?

Dear Kelly,

Ilove going to the theatre inLondon, but find the pricescan be quite high, so I find

that comping can be a great way ofmaking the trip more affordable.

In the past few years I have wontickets to various productions inthe West End: Sweeney Todd, TheWoman in Black, 6 Dance Lessons in 6Weeks, Stomp and Lifecoach, to namebut a few. This means all I have topay for is the train fare, and asthese competitions have all beenfor two tickets, my friends get toshare my wins.

I am now looking forward to my latest win, two tickets to see the musical Never Forget! Ican't wait.

What a great hobby comping is!

Lorna Cox, via e-mail

Ed: That's an excellent tip Lorna. Don't forget to keep an eye out for the comps thatalso include transport costs and a night in a swanky hotel... they might throw in a poshdinner too!
