(Pooh goes outside.)

Pooh: Someone has to have some honey lying around. Just enough for a small snackeral. Or maybe a large morsel.

(As Pooh is looking for honey, Tigger bounces in, not seeing Pooh.)

Song Three: The Wonderful thing about Tiggers – Part One

Tigger: (sung) The wonderful thing about tiggers Is tiggers are wonderful things Their tops are made out of rubber Their bottoms are made out of springs They’re bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers Is I’m the only---

(Tigger bounces into Pooh.)

Tigger: (spoken) Hello there pooh!

Pooh: Hello, Tigger

Tigger: Did you hear something? Something kinda rumbly?

Pooh: That’s my tummy

Tigger: Really? Bends his head to listen. You’re right! Aw, shucks. I thought it was something more exciting than that.

Pooh: Do you happen to have honey on you, Tigger?

Tigger: Not unless I bounced into some. I did get something kinda sticky on my tail earlier. It’s yours if you want it?

(Tigger offers his tail.)

Pooh: Thank you, no. I think I’ll hold out until I find some honey.

Tigger: Suit yourself.

Pooh: Can you help me find some?

Tigger: Love to, Pooh. But I’m looking for something myself.

Pooh: What are you looking for?

Tigger: What Tiggers love most – adventure! I’ll let you know when I find some.

Pooh: If you happen to find any honey on the way to adventure…

Tigger: You’ll be the first to know!

(Tigger bounces off, Pooh looks up at the sky.)

Pooh: (spoken) It’s practically a quarter to lunchtime now! I bet Christopher Robin has some honey. He always has a snack or two for Pooh! He goes to Christopher Robins tree house. Christopher Robin? Yoo-hoo, it’s Pooh!

(Four more narrators enter – Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.)

Blue: Pooh looked really sad for a moment.

Indigo: Then he decided if he knocked, Christopher Robin would hear him.

(Pooh knocks.)

Green: The knocking made a note fall to the ground right at Pooh’s feet.

(Pooh looks down.) Violet: To your left.

(Pooh looks to his right.)

Violet: No, Pooh your other left.

(Pooh turns to see the note and picks it up.)

Indigo: Pooh was very puzzled by the note.

Pooh: Well, it is a very puzzling note.

(Piglet enters.)

Piglet: Hello, Pooh.

Pooh: Hello there, Piglet. Say Piglet, you haven’t got any honey on you, have you?

10

Page 11: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Piglet: (Examining his shirt.) Why, do you see some?

Pooh: No, I was just hoping.

Piglet: What’s that you’ve got in your hand Pooh?

Pooh: It’s a very puzzling note.

Piglet: Maybe you should take it to Rabbit. He’s very good at puzzles.

Pooh: That’s just what I was thinking.

Green: That isn’t what Pooh was thinking at all.

Pooh: Hey!

Blue: Well, it wasn’t, Pooh.

Indigo: But since it was a very good idea, Pooh and Piglet went to Rabbit’s house to see what he thought of the puzzling note.

Song Four: Pooh and Piglet

Pooh and Piglet: (sung) Rabbit is quite good at puzzles He’ll tell us just what it means Wish I could be good at puzzles Maybe if I ate my greens

Pooh: Once Rabbit’s done with this puzzle Maybe he’ll give us a snack We’ve been walking so far just a spoonful or a jar Just some honey would help us get back!

Pooh’s Tummy: Blarp!

11

Winnie the Pooh

(Pooh and Piglet make their way to Rabbit’s house.)

Pooh: Rabbit, we were hoping maybe you could figure out this note. It’s a bit puzzling.

Rabbit: Well, as you know, I’m very good at puzzles.

Piglet: That’s what we thought

Pooh: Say Rabbit, while your puzzling out the note, would you happen to have any honey I – and Piglet – could snack on?

Song Five: Honey!

(The bees dance on.)

Bees: Honey, honey, honey! Honey, honey, honey! Honey, honey, honey! Yeah!

(Pooh, Rabbit and Piglet watch the bees dance off.)

Rabbit: (spoken) I’m afraid I’m fresh out of honey Pooh.

Pooh: I was afraid you would say that.

Rabbit: Let’s see this puzzle of yours. Reading the note. Oh my goodness. Oh my good goodness.

Pooh: So it’s a good kind of puzzle? Not the kind where you’ve lost a piece and can’t find it for the longest time?

Rabbit: What are you talking about Pooh. This is horrible. This note is simply terrifying!

Piglet: What does it say?

12

Page 13: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Rabbit: I don’t know.

Pooh: Then why is it terrifying?

Rabbit: Because…because…I’ll let Owl explain to you why it’s terrifying.

Red: So Pooh, Piglet and Rabbit set out for Owl’s house with puzzling and terrifying note.

Owl: (Reading the note.) Hrrmph.

Pooh: Excuse me Owl, but it that a good noise or a bad noise?

Owl: It’s an, I’m thinking kind of noise, Pooh.

Pooh: Oh, Say Owl, why you’re thinking, do you happen to have any honey?

Owl: Honey? Never touch the stuff. It clogs the arteries and slows the mental process.

Pooh: But it tastes so good Owl.

Rabbit: Hush up and let Owl think, Pooh.

Owl: (Reading the note.) “Gone out Backson. Bisy Backson. Signed Christopher Robin.” (To the others.) Do you know what this means?

Song Six: The Backson Song

Piglet: (spoken) That’s why we came to you Owl.

Rabbit: I tried to explain to them why it was terrifying.

Pooh: What does the note mean, Owl?

13

Page 14: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Owl: This note means…that Christopher Robin has been captured by a creature called the Backson!

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit: Oh!

Rabbit: I knew it! Didn’t I tell you it was terrifying, Pooh! Didn’t I tell you?

Pooh: But what’s a Backson, Owl?

Owl: A Backson is malicious. It’s ferocious.

Piglet: Does it eat…Piglets?

Owl: (sung) They sneak into your library and scribble in all your books!

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Animal Chorus: The Backson, The Backson! We don’t like the Backson!

Owl: When decorating your Christmas tree they tangle up all the hooks!

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Animal Chorus: The Backson, The Backson! We’re afraid of the Backson Owl: They spoil the milk, they stop the clocks They use their horns to put holes in your socks.

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Animal Chorus: The Backson is the one who’s been putting holes in our socks!

Rabbit: (spoken) Didn’t I tell you it was terrifying? We must tell everyone in the wood that Christopher Robin has been kidnapped by the Backson. It’ll probably come for us next!

(Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit and Owl go to Kanga and Roo.)

14

Page 15: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Orange: The first ones they ran into were Kanga and Roo. Roo was much more excited than scared.

Kanga: But what does the Backson do, Owl?

Roo: Yes Owl, what does a Backson do?

(Tigger bounces in.)

Tigger: (Looks around.) Hey – Why’s everybody so…unbouncy?

Rabbit: Because we’re all in danger!

Tigger: Danger? That’s Tee-riffic! There’s nothing Tigger’s like better than danger! Where is it? Where’s the danger? Lemme at it!

Orange: And so the animals told Tigger about the danger.

Green: The terrible danger.

Blue: The terrible, horrible danger.

Red: The terrible, horrible danger they were all in because of the Backson!

Owl: (sung) They creep into your party and pop the red balloons.

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Animal Chorus: The Backson, The Backson We disapprove of the Backson!

Owl: The infiltrate your kitchen and the switch the forks and spoons.

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Animal Chorus: The Backson, The Backson Naughty, Naughty Backson!

Owl: At picnic time they bring the ants, When you bend over they split your pants!

15

Page 16: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Animal Chorus: The Backson, The Backson They like to split your pants

All: The Backson, The Backson, The Backson, The Backson, oh no! The Backson is the reason Christopher Robin’s gone The Backson, The Backson, they’ve got Christopher Robin And we’re the faithful friends that Christopher Robin relies upon The Backson, The Backson, We have to find the Backson We must be brave and have no fear

Owl: Yes you go search and I’ll stay here.

All: We’ll search by the sun and the light of the moon and if everything goes well… …We’ll be back soon

Owl: Back soon…?

All: Back soon!

Owl: Sounds like Backson!

All: Back soon!

Indigo: (spoken) The animals realised they needed a plan to save Christopher Robin.

Yellow: So they turned to Owl as the best planner of them all.

(They all turn to Owl.)

Red: Owl, we’re waiting?

Owl: A plan. Hmm. A plan. This will require a lot of very serious thinking. Let me retire to my library and…(stretches and yawns)…research the question.

16

Page 17: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

(Owl exits.)

Rabbit: Oh dear, I’m going to go and hide.

Pooh: Where are you going to hide, Rabbit?

Rabbit: If I told you Pooh, it wouldn’t be hiding now would it?

Violet: So the animals went and hid, waiting to learn Owl’s great plan.

Green: And then Pooh came up with a plan of his own.

Pooh: I did?

Yellow: Yes, you did, Pooh.

Pooh: Oh, it is a clever plan?

Yellow: The cleverest you’ve ever had! Pooh: Good!

Indigo: So Pooh went and explained his clever plan to Piglet.

Pooh: We’re going to dig a hole in the ground and trap the Backson!

Piglet: That’s a very clever plan, Pooh.

Pooh: I’ve been told it’s the cleverest I’ve ever had.

Piglet: But once the Backson sees the pit, won’t he just walk around it?

Pooh: Hmm, that’s a very good point Piglet.

Piglet: Maybe we could hid the pit and make it look like something Backson’s like?

17

Page 18: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Pooh: You mean like a jar of honey? Honey.

Song Seven: Honey Two

(The bees dance in.)

Bees: (sung) Honey, honey, honey! Honey, honey, honey! Honey, honey, honey! Yeah!

(Pooh and Piglet watch as the Bess dance off.)

Piglet: I’m not sure Backson’s like honey, Pooh.

Pooh: Oh.

Piglet: But everyone like picnics. Maybe we could make the pit look like a picnic?

Pooh: What a clever idea Piglet.

(Pooh and Piglet create the trap and put up signs saying “Backsons Welcom” and “B.Y.O.H”.)

Yellow: So Pooh and Piglet dug a hole in the ground, covered it with a cloth and made it look like a picnic.

Piglet: What does “B.Y.O.H” mean, Pooh?

Pooh: “Bring Your Own Honey.” Just so they know they’re welcome to.

Violet: Pooh and Piglet went away and hid, so the Backson wouldn’t suspect a trap.

(Rabbit enters.)

18

Winnie the Pooh

Rabbit: Must hide, must hide… (Rabbit scrambles around, then stops when he sees the picnic.) Food! Well …I should probably take some provisions. It’ll make it easier to hide.

(Rabbit tries to take some food and falls into the trap.)

Rabbit: Help! Help! The Backson’s caught me!

(Eeyore enters.)

Eeyore: What are you doing down there Rabbit?

Rabbit: Help me Eeyore! The Backson’s trapped me! If I don’t get out of this trap he’ll come take me away, just like he did Christopher Robin.

Eeyore: Grab my tail, I’ll pull you out.

Rabbit: Thank you Eeyore.

(Rabbit grabs Eeyore’s tail which comes off.)

Eeyore: Now what did you do that for?

Rabbit: I didn’t mean to! It just came off in my hand!

Eeyore: Now I’ll have to get another one. Probably won’t be as good as the last one. They never are.

Rabbit: Wait, Eeyore. Don’t leave me!

Eeyore: I’ll be back. Eventually.

(As Eeyore starts to exit Tigger bounces in. He then bounces Eeyore and himself into the trap.)

19

Winnie the Pooh

Tigger: Hello there! Good to see you Eeyore.

Eeyore: What’s good about it?

Rabbit: Tigger we’re trapped in a Backson trap. Can you bounce out and get help?

Tigger: Of course I can! If there’s one thing Tiggers can do, It’s bounce!

(Tigger bounces. Kanga and Roo come by.)

Roo: Mama, can I bounce with Tigger?

Kanga: Just be careful dear.

(Roo bounces into the trap.)

Roo: Hi Tigger!

Tigger: Hi there Roo!

Rabbit: More animals in this trap is not helping.

Tigger: The more the merrier, I always say!

Kanga: (Peeking into the trap.) Is there a problem?

Rabbit: Kanga, we’re trying to get out of the trap.

Kanga: Oh, dear. Why didn’t you say that before? Tigger, if you could bounce Roo up to me, maybe I can reach down and help the rest of you up.

(Tigger bounces causing Kanga to lose her balance and fall into the trap.)

Kanga: Oh dear.

20

Winnie the Pooh

Rabbit: The Backson’s bound to catch us now!

Song Eight: The Backson Song – Reprise

All: (sung) They creep into your party and pop all the red balloons. The Backson, The Backson We disapprove of the Backson! The infiltrate your kitchen and the switch the forks and spoons. The Backson, The Backson Naughty, Naughty Backson! We’re stuck in a hole and we feel so blue ‘Cause the Backson will be here to take us too!

(Owl comes by, pacing while he talks.)

Owl: (spoken) “How to capture a Backson by Owl. All rights reserved. Copyright”…I’ll fill that bit in later. “The art of capturing a Backson is highly complicated but I am up to the task. As my great Uncle Riddley used to say…”

(Owl paces himself into the trap).

Owl: Ow.

Rabbit: Owl, surely you can help us get out of this Backson trap!

Owl: (Examining the trap.) Hmm. Typical Backson strategy I’d say. This will require serious thought.

Orange: While Owl was seriously thinking a lot of other creatures in the wood, fell into the Backson trap. Squirrels and beetles and frogs.

(Pooh and Piglet come y and hear the commotion in the trap.)

Pooh: It sounds like we’ve trapped a whole family of Backsons.

21

Page 22: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Piglet: Oh my. Maybe we should just leave them there. They don’t sound very happy.

Pooh: We have to find Christopher Robin, Piglet.

Piglet: Of course. But let’s at least stay back where the Backson can’t see us.

Pooh: Good idea Piglet. (yelling into the trap) Backson?

Rabbit: Backson!

(The trapped animals start murmuring “Backson”.)

Pooh: They’re Backsons alright!

Rabbit: (To the trapped animals) I told you – we’ve been trapped by Backsons! (yelling up) Backsons we surrender!

Piglet: The Backsons are surrendering Pooh.

Pooh: That’s good.

Owl: Help us out so we can discuss the terms of surrender.

Piglet: The Backsons sound an awful lot like Owl.

Pooh: He does doesn’t he? I suppose we better help them out, so they can lead us to Christopher Robin.

(Pooh and Piglet reach their hands down to help the other animals out but get dragged in themselves.)

Rabbit: Pooh what are you doing pretending to be a Backson.

Pooh: I wasn’t pretending to be a Backson.

22

Page 23: Winnie the Pooh · 2021. 1. 27. · Winnie the Pooh Song One: Winnie the Pooh Yellow: (spoken) Hand in Hand we come, Christopher Robin and I, to lay this book in your lap. (Yellow

Winnie the Pooh

Piglet: What are you doing in our Backson trap?

Rabbit: Your Backson trap?

Pooh: We dug it to trap the Backsons. Owl: And it seems like you’ve captured every creature in the wood except for the Backson.

Green: The animals sat and tried to think of a way out of the pit.

Blue: Which was not a very nice place to be.

Pooh: No it’s not.

Pooh’s Tummy: Blahp!

Pooh: I know. It’s practically afternoon snack time!

Yellow: So Pooh tried to think to keep his mind off his growling tummy.

Pooh: Thinking is hard.

Violet: So Pooh tried remembering instead.

(The WORD Chorus enters with words printed on their shirts.)

Red: He remembered a song Christopher Robin used to sing to him.

Song Nine: Halfway Down

Word Chorus: (sung) Half-way down the stairs is a stair where I sit There isn’t any other stair quite like it I’m not at the bottom I’m not at the top So is the stair where I always stop Half-way up the stairs isn’t up and isn’t down

23

Winnie the Pooh

It isn’t in the nursery, it isn’t in the town And all sort of funny thoughts run round in my head It isn’t really anywhere It’s somewhere else instead!

Yellow: Pooh saw how the words piled themselves up to make a staircase.

Pooh: Oh my! Everybody, look!

Piglet: We can climb out!

Tigger: I could’ve bounced out. If I’d gotten a running start.

Rabbit: Let’s just get ourselves out of here before the real Backson finds us!

(Everyone climbs out of the trap, helping each other.)

Orange: Just then, the animals heard footsteps coming through the woods.

Rabbit: Backson

(Everyone scrambles to hide.)

Red: But it wasn’t the Backson, after all.

Yellow: It was their friend, Christopher Robin.

Christopher Robin: (Entering.) Hello? Anybody there? Where is everyone? (The animals come from of hiding and sit or kneel so Christopher Robin is the tallest.) There you are.

Pooh: Christopher Robin.

Christopher Robin: Hello there, Pooh.

(Christopher Robin greets the animals in turn.)

24

Rabbit: However did you escape from the Backson?

Christopher Robin: What’s a Backson?

Kanga: He wakes up children.

Piglet: He puts out the lights.

Tigger: He rips your pants! If you wear pants. Tigger’s don’t.

Owl: It is without a doubt the most wretched creature once could ever encounter.

Pooh: We thought he’d kidnapped you.

Christopher Robin: Why would you think that?

Owl: Because of this.

(Owl hands the note to Christopher Robin.)

Christopher Robin: Oh, all I meant to say is that I was busy, and that I would be back soon.

Rabbit: Oh.

Roo: (disappointed) So there really isn’t a monster?

Pooh: And we were scared for nothing?

Eeyore: It figures.

Rabbit: Don’t blame me! It was Owl that told us about the Backson.

(All look at Owl.)

Owl: Aherm, perhaps I could’ve reviewed the document a bit more carefully. As my niece Letitia would say “sor-ry”

Pooh: I guess even Owls can make mistakes. But at least we’ve got Christopher Robin back again.

Christopher Robin: But not for long, I’m afraid.

Rabbit: Afraid?

Eeyore: I knew it was too good to be true.

Christopher Robin: It’s going to be Autumn soon, and I’ll be going to school. So that means I won’t have as much time to play with you as I used to.

Roo: Forever.

Christopher Robin: Not forever, Roo. I’ll still have nights and weekends. And next time when summer comes around we’ll spend every day together.

Pooh: But next summer’s a long way away. Lots of breakfasts and lunchtimes and afternoon snacks away.

Christopher Robin: But school hasn’t started yet, Pooh. And that’s why came out here today. So we could have one last summer picnic.

Everybody: Yay! A Picnic!

(The narrators enter and form a rainbow.)

Red: Christopher Robin and the animals set out a picnic.

Orange: They were all really excited.

Yellow: Because it was a really cool picnic.

Green: It was even better than the one I had for my birthday.

Blue: Everyone brought something to share.

Indigo: Including lemonade and cookies and raspberry tarts!

Pooh: Excuse me?

Violet: Yes, Pooh?

Pooh: Haven’t you forgotten something?

Violet: I don’t think so, Pooh.

Christopher Robin: I’m sorry Pooh. My mother was all out of honey.

Pooh: Oh bother.

Christopher Robin: Maybe someone else has some honey.

Pooh: I’ve asked all my friends.

(The Bees buzz by.)

Christopher Robin: Have you asked them?

Pooh: The Bees? I never thought they’d be willing to share.

Christopher Robin: Maybe they would if you invited them to our picnic.

Pooh: Hey Bees?

Bees: Yes?

Pooh: Would you like to come to our picnic?

Bees: Sure! Bees love picnics. Should we bring anything?

Christopher Robin: (spoken) Pooh how did you all escape from the Backson trap?

Pooh: I remembered a song you used to sing to me and we helped each other out.

Christopher Robin: Helping each other out is what friends are supposed to do. When they’re not having really great picnics, that is.

Pooh: Old friends are great. But not better than new friends – with honey.
