“Welcome to this year’s Winter Festival celebrations in NewcastleGateshead. You can expect some inspiring and memorable events over the next few months. We’ve worked with artists, community groups and cultural attractions across NewcastleGateshead to bring you a festive experience that is unique and rooted in the region.

This year, we’ve worked with a number of local businesses to bring together a programme that celebrates a range of successful partnerships and collaborations. Ouseburn Open Studios welcomes visitors into the studios of over 200 designer-makers who have worked together to present an alternative festive shopping experience. We’re also delighted that we are able to bring the New Year’s Eve Midnight Fireworks back for a second year thanks to the kind support of a number of businesses on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside. I hope you’ll spend your evenings in these establishments before stepping outside for our Midnight moment, bringing 2014 in with a bang.

We look forward to welcoming you to NewcastleGateshead for this year’s Winter Festival celebrations.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year so wrap up warm and delve into NewcastleGateshead’s Winter Festival as we welcome a season of special events, intriguing exhibitions, Christmas markets and joyful celebrations to get everyone in the festive spirit.

Enchanted Parks (Wednesday 11 – Sunday 15 December) will once again transform Saltwell Park into a magical winter wonderland and you can be sure of a few surprises with this year’s theme of Saltwell’s Secret Keeper as the beloved park keeper invites you to experience the park like never before.

On New Year’s Eve, NewcastleGateshead hosts one of the biggest free celebrations in the country as the spectacular Winter Carnival brings Norse folklore to life through mythical creatures, blazing torches and the incredible Spark! drummers. After the success of last year, the Midnight Fireworks are back, illuminating the NewcastleGateshead Quayside as the clock strikes twelve. So raise a glass at one of the many Quayside bars and restaurants and see in the new year in style!

In 2014, the celebrations continue with Chinese New Year (Sunday 9 February) as we usher in the Year of the Horse with Chinese-inspired events, performances and activities for the whole family.

Grab friends and family and take to the streets

as we start the countdown to 2014 with fiery

flair, as the much-loved Winter Carnival brings

a whirlwind of mysterious legends and mythical

creatures together for an unforgettable

celebration, immersed in Norse folklore.

But this is no ordinary carnival – make a

resolution to come with us and uncover familiar

creations and brand-new beings, designed to

bring a spectacular wintry twist to the

traditional carnival format. Are you Viking

enough to fend off fantastical beasties? Will

you delve into the deep to come face to face

with a colossal serpent? Or perhaps plunge

past a shoal of fearsome flying fish and make it

back to dry land via a fire-breathing ship.

Set your imagination aglow as blazing torches

weave their way through the city and the

Spark! drummers return, lighting up even the

coldest of evenings in precise time to the beat.

Watch on with baited breath as hordes of Dark

Elves stamp their mark across the city while

live music and performance from mighty

mythical Gods summons the imminent

New Year.

Commissioned by NewcastleGateshead

Initiative in partnership with Newcastle City

Council Arts Team and produced by the

internationally acclaimed outdoor arts

company Walk the Plank, the Winter Carnival

returns in remarkable style for 2013. Each year

hundreds of local residents take part in the

festivities, working with local artists to bring

family-friendly celebration and awe-inspiring

costumes, characters and creations to the

streets for a New Year’s Eve celebration with a

difference, culminating in a dazzling firework
