Winter Theme for Preschool Winter is a theme that offers activities with snow, ice and more for your preschool classroom! This theme includes all kinds of weather! Unfortunately, sometimes it is just too cold to actually go outside and play in it. What do we do? You guessed it: Bring the snow and ice inside! Thank you to Amanda from Creatively Crafting for creating some of the clipart for this packet! Using the Weekly Planning Form In the weekly planning form, ALL of the boxes are editable! Simply print as they are OR move activities to the days you want them or replace activities with your own! You’ll find my standards listed under each activity. This is where you will enter YOUR program’s standards (that you added to the Conversion Chart) 1. Refer to the conversion chart you completed and look up my Standard Letter/Number. 2. Replace that letter and number with YOUR program’s equivalent that you typed into the Conversion Chart. 3. Print! The Weekly AND Daily Planning forms are both 100% editable so you can move the activities to the days you want to do them or even replace them with your own activities! (If you do that-be sure to change them on the daily planning forms as well AND replace the standards in that box with the correct standards for the activity you have replaced mine with!) NOTE: The blue areas will NOT print blue, don’t worry! Those areas are the “editable areas”. They will print with a white background when you print! Using the Standards Conversion Chart 1. Type in each of your program’s equivalent standards next to my standard. 2. Save to your computer. 3. What’s That Falling From The Sky?

Choose a favorite puppet to use. Introduce the puppet to the children.

"Hi everyone! I'd like you to meet my friend___!"

Give the children time to introduce themselves or just say "Hi" to each child with your puppet!

Discuss snow with them using the puppet.

When they are discussing their snow experiences, write down their responses on a chart paper.

You can then compare what children think about snow and what they like to do in it!

Follow up with snow activities to explore the cold!

There is a suggested script on the next page, but feel free to make it your own using your own words and ideas!)

What’s That Falling From The Sky? (continued)

“Boys and girls, the other day I was playing outside. It was a little windy and a little cold. I was kicking my favorite ball around when something got in my eye!

It didn’t hurt, but I had to blink a lot to make it go away. I didn’t know what it was. I started kicking the ball again and something go in both my eyes!

I thought that maybe when I kick the ball, it made something fall from the sky into my eyes. So, I kicked the ball again and then looked up.

And guess what? It worked! All this white stuff started falling from the sky! I tried to catch it in my hands. It would land on my hands. It was white and small and it was cold! And then, it disappeared!!

I didn’t know what it was! Do any of YOU know what that white stuff was that was falling from the sky?” Give children time to answer. If they don’t guess ‘snow’, have the puppet tell them, “Well, I asked my Grandma and she said it was SNOW!”

Then encourage the children to talk about their experiences with snow. Write down their answers on a chart paper. The puppet might ask:

“Have any of YOU seen snow before? “Do you like to play with it?”“What do you like to do with it?”“Why does it snow when I kick my ball? Is that what makes it snow?”“No? Well, where does snow come from?”“Why do you think it snows?”

Print, cut and laminate 2 sets of the mitten page .

Glue one set of mittens inside the file folder.

The children place the mittens on top of it’s match.

There are blackline masters of the mittens so that you can program them to work on other skills and concepts.

Some ideas are:• Color and print numbers to match.• Color and print letters to match (either matching upper case with lower

case or upper case to upper case, etc.)

Print and laminate as many of the activity mats that you will use at your interest center.

Provide a bowl of cotton balls (or pom poms) and plastic tweezers (or small spoons). The children place the cotton balls onto the snowman.

Encourage the children to guess how many cotton balls or pom poms will fit in the snowman’s head and in its body.

VARIATION 1: Use the playdough you made this week for the children to fill the snowman with (either by pressing the playdough into the shape or by filling the snowman shape with small balls of playdough they have created).Provide additional colors for the children to add eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, arms, etc.

VARIATION 2: Provide dry erase markers for the children to embellish the snowman!

I’m A Little SnowpersonSung to I’m A Little Teapot

I’m a little snow person

Over there I sat (point to a spot)

Here are my buttons (point to shirt)

Here is my hat (put hands on heat).

When the sun comes out (shield eyes from sun)

I can’t stay (shake head no and wag finger back in forth in ‘no’ motion)

Because slowly, I would melt away (melt to the ground).

The following images are from the calendar pieces.

You can use these in several ways:

• Print and laminate several pages for the children to use to create patterns. Either you begin a pattern using 4-5 of these cards and encourage the children to continue the same pattern. Or, have the children create their own patterns using the cards.

• Print and laminate several pages for the children to use as a matching/memory game.
