Mohammed Abul Kahir Ali, 40, of Brokenbury Street, London, was given 27 years for the attack which left the victim Nasim Ahmed, 42, with a fractured skull. Ali’s uncle, 57-year-old Roger Khan, of Dacre Park Road, London, was given 30 years in jail after the court heard he had previous con- victions for robbery with a firearm and stabbed two in- mates while serving time for the offence. Sentencing the pair at Exeter Crown Court, Judge Graham Cottle said: “This was effectively an execution. The consequences for Mr Ahmed and his family were, and con- tinue to be, considerable.” Ali and Khan were found guilty on Wednesday after a four-week trial. Judge Cottle said the attack was premed- itated and planned. He described how the two defendants travelled from London to Newton Abbot, armed themselves with a three-foot metal pole and a knife, parked nearby and waited for Mr Ahmed to return from work at the Naz curry house in Teignmouth before they “came out of the darkness” and launched the attack. Hendrik Wiegersma was cutting grass at his farm in Highampton near Hather- leigh, West Devon, when the equipment rolled down a bank, pinning him beneath it. The 62-year-old, who runs a successful stabling business, suffered multiple injuries in- cluding a broken hip, punc- tured lung and kidney damage. But worse was to come as the mower’s petrol seeped onto his body, causing “severe chemical burns” to his legs. Mr Wiegersma’s family were unaware he was out mowing and so did not raise the alarm until ten hours after the accident. Emergency crews were called to the 170-acre Warren Farm just after 4am on Sunday. He was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital via a search and rescue helicopter from RMB Chivenor, then later transferred to Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital where there is a specialist burns unit. Mr Wiegersma remains in intensive care but has regained consciousness and is stable. His family say he will require extensive skin grafts to try to repair the damage to his legs.
