AU’s 14-6 record this season is tied for the second-best 20- game start in program history. The 1997-98 team began a program-best 18-2 and ended up finishing 23-7, earning the program’s first ever postseason bid. The 14-6 start has been accomplished in three other seasons (1985-86, 1986-87 and 2008-09). The Eagles enter play on Saturday with a 4-2 conference record, good for a tie for second place with Army. Navy sits alone in first place with its perfect 6-0 record. Lafayette, meanwhile, is in a three-way tie for fifth place at 2-4. Through 20The Eagles have won 12 of their last 14 games to improve to 14-6, which is tied for the second-best start through 20 games in program history. The 1997-98 team began a program-best 18-2 and ended up fi nishing 23-7, earning the program’s fi rst ever postseason bid. The 14-6 start has been accomplished on three other occasions before this season (1985-86, 1986-87 and 2008-09).

60 is the NumberAmerican is 10-0 this season when scoring at least 60 points, and going back to last year, the Eagles have won their last 22 games when hitting the 60-point mark. AU’s last loss when reaching 60 came on December 20, 2009, when Maryland defeated the Eagles, 75-64. Nice to Be HomeAmerican is 6-1 at home this season and had won 14 straight in Bender Arena prior to Wednesday’s loss to Navy, which was the 14th-longest home winning streak in Division I at the time. The 14 consecutive home wins matched the program-record, which was also reached during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. AU has been victorious in 33 of its last 39 home games, which dates back to the 2007-08 season.

Army Ends Record-Setting StreakPrior to the defeat to Army on January 19, American had won 11 games in a row, the sixth-longest winning streak in Division I at the time. The Eagles had not lost a game since falling at Texas Tech on November 27, and had outscored their opponents by 12.0 ppg during the run. The 11-game run tied a program-record for most consecutive wins, which was also accomplished during the 2007-08 season.

Defense WinsDefense was key during AU’s then-11-game winning streak, as the Eagles allowed their opposition to score just 49.6 ppg during the run. In fact, American’s opponents were held to 60 points or fewer in all 11 games. For the season, the Eagles are giving up 54.8 ppg, good for 27th-best in the country.

Big Win to Open Patriot League PlayAmerican began conference play with a 64-51 victory at two-time defending Patriot League champion Lehigh on January 8 in Bethlehem, Pa. Leer registered a game-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, along with seven rebounds. The win snapped Lehigh’s 18-game home winning streak against conference foes -- which dated back to the 2007-08 season -- as well as the Mountain Hawks’ nine-game win streak at the time. The Eagles followed that with victories in three of their last fi ve conference games to move to 4-2 in PL play.

Strong Out of the GateAU completed non-conference play with a 10-4 record, which is tied for the third-most non-league wins in program history. The 10 victories are one shy of the 1985-86 and1986-87 squads that registered 11 non-league wins in each season. The Eagles could have a shot to pick up additional non-conference victories this season if they earn a postseason bid as they have done in each of the previous three seasons.

Leer Leads the WayLiz Leer has played a major part in American’s recent success, averaging 14.5 points

and 5.7 rebounds per contest while shooting 53.7 percent from the fi eld over her last 10 games. The senior has scored in double fi gures in 10 of her last 11 contests, and 15 in total this season. Moving Up the ChartsLeer’s now has 1,225 points in her career, placing her sixth all-time in program history. She is 73 points shy of reaching fi fth place in the rankings (1,298), which is currently held by Chanel Hunt ‘06. Leer will be joined in the 1,000-point club shortly by Nicole Ryan, who comes into Saturday’s game with 998 career points.

Double Your PleasureLeer has recorded four double-doubles this season, giving her seven in her career. She registered 15 points and 13 rebounds in AU’s season-opening win at East Carolina, and put together a 16-point, 14-rebound performance in AU’s triumph at Mount St. Mary’s on November 17. Her 14 rebounds matched a career-high, as did her fi ve assists against The Mount. Leer then put together a 12-point, 10-rebound effort against Sam Houston State on November 26, and most recently, collected her fourth double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the January 12th win at Bucknell.

All-Around StrackLisa Strack has scored in double fi gures in each of her last fi ve games and is averaging 13.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.1 steals during the stretch. Back on December 22 against Troy, the junior put together one of the great statistical performances in recent AU history with a career-best 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting while registering six assists, fi ve rebounds and four steals. As a result of that performance, Strack was named the Patriot League Player of the Week on December 27.

Impressive RookieFreshman Alexis Dobbs registered career-highs with 18 points and fi ve assists in the victory over Colgate on January 15. She has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week already once this season and is currently AU’s third-leading scorer with 7.2 ppg.

Anya Hitting the GlassSophomore Stephanie Anya recorded a career-best 13 rebounds in the January 8th win at Lehigh. She has grabbed at least six boards in seven games this season, and is averaging 4.9 rpg, second on the squad behind Leer’s 6.5 rpg.

Ryan on a Roll Over the last 12 games, Ryan has made 27 three-pointers on 45.0 percent shooting from deep (27-for-60). This includes her 5-for-5 performance in the win over Binghamton on December 30, recognizing her as the fi rst AU student-athlete to ever be perfect on at least fi ve three attempts in a game. Ryan holds the school-record with 187 made treys in her career.

Picking Up the HardwareThe Eagles captured the Hawk Holiday Classic on December 31st following victories over Binghamton and Brown. Leer was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player after registering 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game on 13-of-22 shooting from the fi eld. Ryan and Strack were each named to the all-tournament team. Ryan was 6-of-9 from beyond-the-arc in the two games, including a perfect 5-5 against Binghamton, while Strack averaged 11.0 and 4.0 rebounds in the tournament.

Record-Setting Pace to 50The win over Brown on December 31st was Head Coach Matt Corkery’s 50th career victory. In his third season at the helm at American, Corkery has a 55-28 record, and he became the fastest coach to reach the 50-win milestone in program history. His winning percentage of .663 is currently second all-time in Patriot League history behind Kevin Morris’ .678, who coached at Fordham from 1993-95.

Shut Down DAU allowed 32 points to Binghamton in the win on December 30, which marked the second fewest points given up in a single game in program history. The record was set when American surrendered 31 points to Lafayette last January 30 in a 22-point victory.

Block PartyThe Eagles have recorded nine blocked shots on two occasions this season, most recently occuring in the victory over Binghamton on December 30. The nine single-game blocks are tied for second in program history. The school record sits at 10, which occured on March 9, 2001 when the Eagles registered 10 against James Madison. Anya leads AU this season with 24 blocks, while Leer has 22 and currently holds the career record in program history with 192.

A Perfect 10During a stretch in the Eagles’ victory over Mount St. Mary’s on November 17, American knocked down 10 consecutive three-pointers. This came during a 10:45 run of play at the end of the fi rst half and into the fi rst 9:02 of the second period. AU fi nished with 11 made threes in the game, which tied for the second most single-game treys in program history.

Leader of the PackAmerican has been chosen fi rst in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, which was voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. This marks the fi rst time AU has ever been picked to win its conference. The Eagles have now improved by one spot in each of the last fi ve Patriot League Preseason Polls.

Postseason Play AgainLast season marked the third straight year American made a postseason appearance, which set a new program record. It was the fourth WNIT berth for the Eagles in program history (1998, 2008, 2009 and 2010).

20-20 VisionAmerican fi nished 2009-10 with 22 wins, the second most single-season victories in program history. It marked their fourth-ever 20-win season and fi rst since 1997-98.

Leadership at the TopCorkery was chosen as the Patriot League Coach of the Year last season. He became only the second women’s basketball coach in program history to be recogized with the award, joining Melissa

McFerrin following the 2007-08 season.

Topping the ChartsAt 13-1 in conference play in 2009-10, American earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. This was the second ever conference regular season title for the Eagles, as AU captured it in 2008 with an 11-3 Patriot League mark. The 13 conference wins set a new program record, topping the previous mark of 11, which was accomplished three prior seasons.

She had 62 in the 2008-09 campaign, which set the single-season school record at the time before she broke it last season.

- In her career, Leer is shooting 43.2 percent from three-point range, which is the highest percentage in program history. Overall, she is a 51.6 percent shooter from the fi eld, good for fi fth all-time in AU history.

- In the December 4th win over Youngstown State, Ryan broke the school record for career three-pointers, which was previously held by Talicia Jackson ‘09 with 160. She now has 187 made threes.

Matt Corkery is in his third season as the head women’s basketball coach at American University. Corkery has a 55-28 career record at AU, including a 26-8 mark in Patriot League play.

The 2009-10 campaign was a historic season for Corkery’s Eagles. American fi nished Patriot League play with a 13-1 Patriot League record, its best ever conference record, and earned a share of the Patriot League regular season championship. Additionally, AU’s 22-10 overall record gave the Eagles only their fourth ever 20-win season. The 22 wins were the second most ever in school history, and AU was rewarded with its program-record third straight postseason berth.

Additionally, junior forward Michelle Kirk was named the program’s fi rst ever conference Player of the Year, as well as a ECAC Division I All-Star and Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete. Classmate Liz Leer joined her on the All-PL First Team, marking the fi rst time in program history the Eagles have had two fi rst team selections as a member of the Patriot League.

Finally, Corkery became the second AU women’s basketball coach to be named Patriot League Coach of the Year. Melissa McFerrin received the honor following the 2008 campaign.

In 2008-09, Corkery led American to a 19-12 record, which included the program’s second consecutive postseason appearance. The Eagles’ 10-5 non-conference record was the best in school history, and their 19 total victories were the most since the 1997-98 campaign. The Eagles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams, Drexel and Lehigh, during the season.

Additionally, Corkery coached three All-Patriot League selections in 2008-09, including First Team performer Michelle Kirk and All-Rookie Team honorees Ebony Edwards and Lisa Strack. Corkery oversaw the largest women’s basketball crowd in school history when 1,177 fans attended the home game against Lehigh on February 7, 2009.

“We are pleased with the progress that Matt and his staff have made with our women’s basketball program over the last two years both on and off the court,” commented Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill. “He is a great teacher of the game and his passion for this team will translate into continued success for this program. We’re excited for what this season and the future will bring.”

Corkery was named to his current position on May 19, 2008 after serving

as AU’s associate head coach during the 2007-08 campaign. In total, Corkery has been on the AU staff for fi ve seasons. In 2007, he was elevated from assistant coach and recruiting coordinator to associate head coach. With the promotion, Corkery assumed additional responsibilities both on and off the court.

Corkery joined the Eagles in 2004 after spending three seasons as the associate head coach at Division II Emporia State (Kan.). During his tenure with the Hornets, Corkery helped guide the squad to a 63-25 record and No. 2 rankings nationally in both the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

Corkery served as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin University from 1999-2001. During his tenure, the Ladyjacks won consecutive Southland Conference titles and made successive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In 2000, the Ladyjacks advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Tournament as a 12-seed. Corkery’s squad recorded a 54-11 record during his tenure at Stephen F. Austin.

From 1996 to 1999, as head coach at Howard College (Texas), he led the Lady Hawks to three top 10 rankings in the National Junior College Athletic Association polls and an overall record of 90-12. In 1998, Corkery was named the NJCAA Region V Coach of the Year, as his squad compiled a 34-3 record and fi nished in third-place in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Corkery earned a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1993 and a Master’s of sports and exercise sciences in 1996 from West Texas A&M University. While with the Lady Buffs, Corkery worked his way up from student assistant coach to graduate assistant and eventually earned a full-time assistant coaching position. As an assistant, Corkery mentored a Buffs squad that went 28-3, won the Lone Star Conference title and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NCAA Division II national rankings in the 1995-96 campaign. The team’s record during Corkery’s tenure as an assistant at West Texas A&M was 120-32.

A native of Whitharral, Texas, Corkery currently resides in Washington, D.C.
