Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional bowel disorder that most commonly affects women. It can present itself through a variety of symptoms, and often individuals with IBS can have very different symptom profiles. Typically, IBS is associated with a change in bowel habit and linked with symptoms such as abdominal discomfort, bloating and increased flatulence. Unfortunately, the cause of IBS is not yet known, but it is understood that diet and lifestyle are contributing factors to symptom onset. To date, there is no diagnostic test for IBS; a diagnosis is made after all other possible causes for bowel symptoms are ruled out. At London Bridge Hospital, we provide a fully integrated care framework across various departments, from initial consultation with a Consultant Gastroenterologist to diagnostic testing to identify if there are other possible causes for changes to usual bowel habits.

If other causes are ruled out and the Consultant diagnoses IBS, they will refer patients to one of London Bridge Hospital’s dietitians for specialist dietary advice. On consultation with the dietitian, they may consider a diet therapy known as the low FODMAP diet. This is a two-stage therapy; involving the diet itself, and the reintroduction phase. This dietary intervention is aimed at achieving long-term management of bowel symptoms.

Weight loss and obesityOptimal weight management is important for health, and specialist gastroenterologists provide patients with the best possible treatments for weight management. The dietetics team is also available to provide personal guidance and bespoke advice to help patients reach their weight loss goal.

wellbeing and diet At London Bridge Hospital, we are able to provide personally tailored nutritional and dietary advice from our team of registered dietitians, who specialise in:

Gynaecology At London Bridge Hospital, we have access to leading gynaecological specialists. These specialists provide treatment for a large array of problems, such as:

• Endometriosis

• Fibroids

• Hysterosalpingogram test (HSG)

• Infertility

• Menopause

- Onward referral for osteoporosis

• Menstrual cycle problems

• Ovarian cysts

• Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

EndometriosisEndometriosis affects around 2 million women in the UK. Most women are diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 40. Endometriosis is a common condition in which small pieces of the womb lining (the endometrium) are found outside the womb. This could be in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder, bowel, vagina or rectum.

Endometriosis commonly causes pain in the lower abdomen (tummy), pelvis or lower back, and may also lead to fertility problems. Our Consultant Gynaecologist can diagnose endometriosis with a single diagnostic test.

For further information call +44 (0)20 7234 2009 or visit www.londonbridgewomenshealth.co.uk

Endometriosis can be difficult to treat. The aim of treatment is to ease the symptoms so that the condition does not interfere with daily life.

Menstrual cycle problemsMost women have a menstrual cycle that is regular, around 28 days long, and bleed for three to seven days each cycle. Some women, however, experience problems. Gynaecology Services at London Bridge Hospital can help with the following menstrual cycle problems:

• Bleeding at abnormal times

• Heavy periods (menorrhagia)

• Irregular periods

• Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)

• Periods which stop (amenorrhoea)

MenopauseThe menopause is marked by the ending of menstruation (when a woman’s periods stop). As a result of these hormonal changes, many women have physical and emotional symptoms, such as hot flushes, night sweats and irritability.

At London Bridge Hospital, we provide consultation and treatment to ease menopausal symptoms that are severe or distressing.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)Polycystic ovaries are common; around one in ten women develop what is called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), where the ovaries produce male hormones in slightly increased amounts. Polycystic simply means that there are multiple cysts on the ovaries.

DiagnosisPolycystic Ovary Syndrome can be diagnosed by performing an ultrasound scan and a blood test to identify if there are raised levels of male hormones (androgens), and also a high level of the hormone from the pituitary gland called Luteinising Hormone (LH).

TreatmentTreatment is dependent upon the individual needs of the patient, and can involve therapies such as hormone replacement.
