Women’s History Month Webquest Assignment

Introduction: As we have discussed in class, March is Women’s History Month. We in the United States first officially recognized the significance of women in our history in New York City on February 28th, 1909. The Socialist Party of America held this day to honor the women who protested working conditions during the 1908 garment worker’s strike. International Women’s Day became an annual observance across many countries of the world, and was used to honor significant women in history and fight for equal rights for women. The United States celebrates International Women’s Day every year on March 8th, with the entire month of March dedicated to influential women in history. Task: To celebrate Women’s History Month, we are going to research different influential women in the history of our country and present our research to the rest of the class. This project will involve extensive use of the internet, as well as other computer programs, textbooks, and other printed materials. The class will be broken up into groups of two, and each group will be assigned one of the following women:

Harriet Tubman

Rosa Parks

Clara Barton

Susan B. Anthony

Molly Pitcher

Sacajawea

Dorothea Dix

Rachel Carson

Helen Keller

Eleanor Roosevelt

Sandra Day O’Connor

Amelia Earhart The final product for this project will include a PowerPoint presentation, an essay including an outline and a bibliography, and a reflection. Process: Step 1: Look on the internet for at least 3 legitimate websites that include information about your assigned woman in history. These websites must either be a .gov, .edu, or .org website. Step 2: Look in the library or on the internet for at least 2 printed sources of information about your assigned woman in history. At least one of these sources must be a book. Step 3: Using these sources, research answers to the following questions:

Where and when was your assigned woman born?

What was her profession?

How has she influenced United States history?

What were some of the challenges she faced in her efforts?

What is an interesting fact about your assigned woman that most people would not know?

When did your assigned woman die? Step 4: As you are doing research, ensure you take proper notes, and ensure you record page numbers and/or paragraphs with significant or interesting quotes. Step 5: Once all of your research is collected, develop an outline for your essay. Step 6: Based on your outline, type of the first draft of your essay. This must be at least 2 pages double spaced, and must follow MLA format. Do not forget to properly cite any sources and quotations. Step 7: Exchange essays with one other group, and proofread the other group’s essay. Step 8: Once you receive your essay back, make any changes and produce a final draft. Step 9: Create a Works Cited page for your essay. Ensure it is also MLA format. Step 10: Create a slide-by-slide PowerPoint outline for a presentation you will give to your class about your assigned woman. Step 11: Using that outline, create the actual presentation, to include at least 3 images. These images must be copyright free, or you must cite the source of the image. Step 12: Practice the presentation at least 3 times, ensuring that each group member has a chance to speak. Step 13: Present your PowerPoint presentation based on the schedule that will be passed out in class. Step 14: While other groups are presenting, you will follow a rubric to help assess that presentation. Step 15: Each member of the group will compose their own reflection on the project to be turned in after presentations. The reflection must be at least 1 page double-spaced and must include, at the very least, the answers to the following questions:

What did you like most about your presentation?

Did you learn anything you did not know before?

What would you do differently if you could do it all over again?

What challenges did you face while completing this project?

How did you contribute specifically to this project, and what do you feel your strengths were that you brought to the table?

Do you have any recommendations for me for future classes as to how make this project more efficient and enjoyable?
