He had always ral- lied from past ailments, he seemed as though he was not subject to the mortality the rest of us share. Luke sometimes seemed as though he might bite people, just like the gorillas and rhinos he admired, and it stood him in good stead to get done what he wanted to get done, and to protect and promote those he wanted to protect and promote. He also had the softest heart in town, and was so generous, it usu- ally left him penniless. If you gave Luke $50 to buy groceries, you would find out later in the after- noon he had given to the Boy Scouts on the third floor. Luke was Irish on both sides, his cherished mother from County Wexford. He spent most of his life in Queens, growing up in Woodhaven with a brief stint as an actor in Minnesota. He returned to NYC to continue acting and found a career in public relations/sales working for three top firms, the last of which required travel. He worked for a hat manufacturer and his reputation was could sell a hat to the headless horseman. He de- scribed his salad days with joy, with many friends and spaghetti rent parties if required. He loved a costume party. At one “Night at the Castle” he ran at White Castle on Queens Boulevard, Juan Arache remembers bales of hay and live donkeys and Luke as Henry VIII. Luke loved to travel and started working for free at Don Bar Travel where he thrived and was hired. Later he bought the business and had his office on 46th Street. He took tours all over the world in- cluding India, Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East. Kris Czerniachowicz describes Luke trip as among the “highlights” of her life. Buster Sabba said Luke’s simple bus weekend to Amish Country was his “top vacation” ever. He protected his tour charges with zeal. On one journey to Egypt, his friend Ernie said Luke threatened a dishonest vendor hounding one of his tour group, shouting, “Hey! As soon as I get off this camel, you are in trouble!” For as far back as I can remember, when my father-in-law, Joe Sabba, went on one of his many vacations, Luke Adams would come into our “Shop,” after hours, to do the Woodside Herald - exactly as he was taught to do by Joe Sabba. And, Joe didn’t trust anyone to touch the paper! When our new office burned down due to a homeless person smoking, and secretively living, in the basement of that office, Luke insisted we move our office into his home, and many of our newspapers - including the Woodside Herald - were done on Luke’s kitchen table. When we had trouble finding office space, Luke insisted we move into what was his storage area in the back of Don-Bar Travel Agency, which later became our ‘home.’ I remember so many social occasions when Luke was Master of Ceremonies and made us laugh or astounded us with his Sunnyside recollections. He loved to be on the stage, and he loved Sunnyside! My last written conversation with him was just this past Halloween, when one of his usual, beautiful holiday eCards came to me. Such holidays prompted us to fill each other in on what occurred since we last wrote. This last time he told me that he was feeling really old and he didn’t expect to be around much longer. His prophecy came true, sadly for me. I smile to think that he is now with Buster and Joe, filling them in on what they missed. They would be so proud to learn that Joe’s granddaughter - and Buster’s daughter, Sherilyn, - was now keeping Joe’s dream so perfectly alive, with printer’s ink running in her veins. Rest in peace, my dear friend, until we meet again. Marlene R. Sabba UNITED FORTIES MONTLY MEETING Thursday, November 20th @ 7pm St. Teresa’s Parish Center, 44th Street & 50th Ave, Woodside

He broke the rules in order to leada merry chase, as when he couldnot find a night guide in Commu-nist China and took a large groupout in the middle of the night, sing-ing, with flashlights – until theauthorities intervened and trans-ported them back to their hotel.Luke threw himself into commu-nity service. He worked hard aspart of Gateway Restoration, thegroup that created the famous decoSunnyside Arch. He was electedas a volunteer as President of theChamber of Commerce, and laterwent on to be hired as ExecutiveDirector and Marketing Director. His dedication to the Chambermade it the top Chamber of Com-merce in the tri-state area and hewas often consulted for advice on

how to market a Chamber. His tiesto Sophia Ganosis of the QueenChamber of Commerce helped thelocal Chamber. He created the firstmunicipal website in 1993 and drewthe most hits of any in Queens. He adored the Sunnyside WoodsideLions Club and as president put iton the service club map, with Hal-loween parties for children, ahardbound fundraising cookbookwith recipes from Hillary Clintonand Geraldine Ferarro, and streetsales of holiday cards which madethousands for the needy. FatherJerry of St. Raphael’s said that Lukeraised serious money diligently “forhungry children for seven years.”Luke made sure worthy people, with no gain to anyone in power, received recognition and awards.

Luke was emcee at the very firstSunnyside Artists, Inc. art show in2007, and became VP, champion-ing it with his whole heart be-cause he sought to makeSunnyside Woodside a havenfor artists and art.Roel Vankerkooi, his executor, withthe help of friend Anthony Kulzer,in lieu of flowers, set up non-profitcharity donation site, “The LukeAdams Art Prize,” to be given 100%to winning artists at the annualjuried Sunnyside Artists show, judged by the artists themselves.SunnysideArtists.org presidentManny Gomez commits to fundingit yearly as part of the Luke AdamsSunnysider of the Year Award.Thank you, Roel and Tony.

Luke Adams was the Mayor of Sunnyside. Sunnyside will never be thesame without him. Luke, rest in peace.

Diane Ballak,108th Pct Community Council President

I’ve been friends with Luke since 1972. I’ve spent many holidays withhim. He was a great entertainer and great cook. I have many memorablememories of him. We go as far back as the Gateway restoration…if itwasn’t for Luke the archways wouldn’t be where they are today! Hehelped me in many ways and will truly be missed.

Steve Desimone,Pets Unlimited

Another local yearly event isnamed after him, “The LukeAdams Sunnysider of the Year,”of which he was the first recipientin 2011. The award is given forcommunity service without re-gard to fundraising, politics, oraffiliation. Awardees include theVery Rev. Brian P. Dowd, FrancesSchmidt, Donald McCallian andOguzhan Turan, just last week, where Luke spoke with enthusi-asm and seeming health and (continued on page 7)

seemed to enjoy every moment.Luke said his favorite place onearth after Queens was Ireland. Heloved his memorabilia as thoughfine jewels, art, folk art from allover the world, cats, cooking, en-tertaining, blogging, helping thosein need, and promoting all thingsQueens. You could not get out ofhis apartment without a gift of food.He studied local history, and hisexcellent historical photographcollection for the Chamber, “TheGood Old Days,” will back uponline in 2016.

It is indisputable that there was only one Luke Adams. He was themost opinionated, sincere and generous person I have ever met.Whether you liked it or not, you knew what Luke thought. I willremember and miss him as Sunnyside’s greatest booster. For Luke, our neighborhood always came first.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 7(continued from page 4)

Luke was filled with life and goodhumor, knew local lore and poli-tics, and was frequently consultedfor his advice. He knew the realgossip about the “rat pack” of theearly Sunnyside men of the fifties, whose generosity was matchedonly by their wild evenings. Whenhe supported someone, he went allthe way to the mat, when otherfriends had walked out. Many lo-cal businesses say that Luke wasthe first to show up and help themin bad times or be accepted into theneighborhood, with his trusty cam-era and friendly, unpretentiousnewsletter, with his misspellings, which became a blog.He was known most for his deci-siveness, cheer, zest for life andability to get things done. WhenLuke was at your back, not onlywas there a fair wind, you wereprotected as a newborn babe. Hisferocity could understandablyalienate those in charge. But thatsame quality also worked to en-sure that Sunnyside was a place ofconviviality and opportunity forall ethnicities, nationalities, reli-gions and social groups, as he sup-ported good people and hard work-ers and reported in this paper andhis own constant communications. As much as he truly respected thoseseeking and in office, hosting par-ties in his home, he always wastrue to himself, such as opposingthe renaming of the QueensboroBridge. He was not afraid to “speaktruth to power.”He used to refer to WalterMcCaffrey, Cathy Nolan and LilyGavin as his “close personal friend,”and each of them were, as werehundreds of other lucky people.I first met him in the nineties, whenI asked his advice when DonMcCallian and I were setting up ademonstration for more police onQueens Boulevard which Luke haddone in the past. He was helpful butI found him somewhat frightening. He then asked me to help him withsome graphic work, and his admi-ration was so heartening, and grati-tude so genuine, I ended up helpinghim with his many initiatives foryears – he did that with many of usas a Pied Piper of sorts, all happy tohelp and feeling part of somethinggood for the world. He used not money, fame, con-nections, social standing, edu-cation or subterfuge to achievehis vision for his belovedSunnyside; he did it with talent, grace, kindness, follow-through,good will and force of personal-ity. Luke now joins Lou Lodati,Joe Sabba, Henry Billharz andmany other “founding fathers”in the pantheon of local giants, who have made this area ofQueens a better place to live forall of us who remain.

He was our greatestcommunity leader, alwayscaring for the people aroundhim. He fought and strivedfor the best for thecommunity he loved. He’struly loved and will bemissed immensely. He willalways be in our hearts.

Lily Gavin,Dasies Restaurant

We are all saddened by the news that Luke Adams has passed away.Luke loved Sunnyside like no other person could and he was aneighborhood treasure for many years. I feel fortunate to have knownhim and to have heard so many stories about his world travels andhis community activism. He could also cook some great meals! Isaw him for the last time last Monday at the ‘Luke Adams Sunnysiderof the Year’ event. He seemed in good spirits and as always, waspresent at a neighborhood event he helped make possible. Mythoughts are with Roel, Pat, Kris, Cathy and all his friends. He willbe missed.

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer

One of the ‘Great Old Timers’ fromSunnyside. I remember when Luke(with his camera), Joe Sabba, LouLodati and John Hadjopoulos(original owner of the PostRestaurant) would get together and sitin the back of the old Post talking andjoking with each other, for hourssometimes.
