Woodstock Elementary Newsletter November 2014 Principal Points: We loved the activities provided during Red Ribbon Week by our magnificent PTA volunteers and the Halloween Assembly was so-o much fun for the kids and staff. Our 6th graders performed to "Thriller" and they were awesome! They are not the only awesome people- our PTA is the absolute best in the world. They match the PTA theme this year--Be Inspired and they are! I also wanted to make sure you aware of the following Open Enrollment Guidelines- Granite School District provides school choice enrollment in all schools where space is available. Parents are responsible for transportation when exercising school choice. This explains Granite School District’s Open Enrollment Guidelines; Open Enrollment is necessary for students to attend a school other than their home boundary school. There are two open enrollment periods: Early Open Enrollment and Late Open Enrollment. The Early Open Enrollment period is the recommended time to enroll for the next school year. Late Open Enrollment period is for the current year and may be applied for at any time. Early open enrollment period for the 2015/2016 school year begins on Monday, December 1, 2014 and ends on Friday, February 20, 2015. Open Enrollment Applications are available at all schools, and are processed in the order received. Students residing within Granite School District boundaries are given priority. Enrollment depends on space available in the requested grade, class, or program. Open Enrollment requests do not require a release from the student’s home school or district. A one-time, non-refundable $5.00 processing fee, payable to the requested school, may be charged at the time the application is submitted. This fee can be waived for qualified applicants. If your student is accepted for Open Enrollment, annual reapplication is not required—as long as the student remains in the same school, and space is available. When a student transitions from elementary school to junior high, or from junior high to high school, there is no automatic feeder system for Open Enrollment; therefore, reapplication is necessary to attend a school outside of the student’s home boundary school. For more detailed information, refer to the back of the Open Enrollment Application or Granite School District’s website: www.graniteschools.org; select Departments>Prevention and Student Placement>Open Enrollment Guidelines. ~Principal Yvonne Pearson Calendar: We hope you all had a wonderful and safe Halloween.  PTA President’s Message:

November is always a time for gratitude for me. It is a time to reflect on the year that is coming to a close and all of the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed upon me. I am always INSPIRED to share my gratitude. I am so honored and blessed to be able to serve the Woodstock PTA as the PTA President and I am grateful to do it with the wonderful teachers, students and parents. It never ceases to amaze me when I step into an assembly or class room, and the students get on that stage or say something extra special to me that I needed to hear that day. When we receive a special note from a teacher or a kind word to let us know that we are appreciated, it brings so much joy and love to my heart. It is in that moment that I can forget the outside world. I am so blessed to be able to be here at Woodstock with all of you. Thank you for all of your support you give to our School and the Woodstock PTA. Woodstock is FABULOUS because of all of you. Thank you for everything you do. Now, I encourage all of you to “BEE INSPIRED” and share your gratitude this month. ~Nichole Gunther Woodstock PTA President 2014-2015

Reflections: All Reflections entries have been collected and judging will begin soon. We were so excited to see the creative art works that were submitted. Your artwork could go through several rounds of judging over the next few months. We’ll have our final results in January or February. Thank you for entering the Reflections Contest and good luck! Dads & Donuts: Our next Dad’s & Donuts is this Friday, November 7th, at 7:20 AM. Bring mom, dad, grandparents and friends! Read a great book with donuts and a drink all while helping support the Woodstock PTA. Thank you for the very successful Dad's & Donuts in October! We especially want to thank the volunteers that helped make this possible, Willy Ray, Lynnette Brown, Melissa Goodman, Joe Russo, Paula Gause, Deidre Russo and a special thank you to the Granato family for the donation of the donuts and 9th Street Market Beans and Brew for the donation of the coffee! See you Friday morning! Birthday Lunch: Our students love Birthday Lunch! If your student as a birthday in November they are invited to sit at the special birthday table during lunch and are given a birthday treat. This month birthday lunch will be November 21st. Students will receive an invitation in class as a reminder. Parents are welcome to join their students. We hope to see you there! Thank you to Mariah Barlow and Mandy Childs for planning and organizing our birthday lunch each month!

Green Team: Last month the Woodstock Green Team wrapped up our amazing 2014 season across the street at our two adjacent plots at the SOUL Community Garden. One of the highlights last month was participating in the SOUL Garden Harvest Celebration on October 11th...this one was THE BEST yet! SOUL Community Garden was overwhelmed by the attendance. We had a spooky time decorating pumpkins, taking hayrides, and listening to stories by the campfire. The Murray City Fire Department even stopped by! SOUL garden provided the food and drinks for everyone - over 200 hotdogs served. It was fun to see all of the Woodstock families in costume, smiling, having fun together with our SOUL garden friends. Let’s make this a Woodstock Halloween tradition!

This past weekend, Woodstock Green team Garden volunteers worked together on the last Community "work day" at the garden and harvested the last of our produce (lots of still wonderful Swiss Chard, tons of cilantro and other herbs), dug up some things like rosemary plants to save in pots till next spring, and saved some seeds from our Sunflowers and Marigolds to plant next season. We cleared everything from the plots and now our plots wait to be nurtured by a hopeful, good valley snowpack this winter, and we will be ready to plant again with the students and teachers in the spring! The Green team would like to thank the following Woodstock garden volunteers and their families for their instrumental help during our 2014 season, with everything from plot design, seed/plant acquisition, assembling classroom kits, arranging and conducting walking field trips for the children to plant and harvest, watering/weeding/harvesting/tending with their families over the summer, helping with the Harvest Celebration, and

plot take-down/wrap up:  Sariah Henry (with extra special kudos for being our chief garden guru AND liaison to the SOUL garden!), Beth Inman, Allie Jones, Paulina Gudgell, Thomas and Amanda Plustwik, Joe Russo, Marci Olson, Barb Wilking, Nicole Gunther, Mariah Barlow, Angela Swaney, Jen Young, Brandy Garner, Christy VanOrman, Jennifer Morrison, Carolyn Linthorst, Jami Hunt, Danielle Kikel, Christina MacNeil (spouse of Murray City fireman), Audrey Maynard, Jacqui Fay, Paula Gause, Robyn Ivins, and to ALL of the amazing parent volunteers (unnamed) that joined us on our walking fieldtrips.

Cans for Cocoa: On December 5th we will be having Cans for Cocoa during lunchtime. Students are asked to bring in any canned good donation for the Utah Food Bank, and in exchange they will be given hot cocoa at lunch. We are excited to offer this opportunity to give back!
