Woolly Mammoth

Woolly MammothThe woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), also known as tundra mammoth,

was a species of mammoth. The woolly mammoth was discovered from the frozen

carcasses and bones in northern Eurasia and northern North America. These

animals are the well known species of mammoth. They began to disappear from its

range some 10,000 years ago in the Pleistocene. However, a handful number of

species still survived in the 1700 B.C. in Wrangel Island. Scientists did not face any

kind of difficulty in comprehending the nature of woolly mammoth as their remains

did not turn into stone but are conserved in their organic state. One of the possible

reasons was the frozen climate and the gigantic size. Woolly mammoth were not

believed to be larger than African elephants. The adult woolly mammoths had couldgrow to a size of 2.7 meters (9 feet) and 3.2 meters (10 feet). They had smaller ears

as compared to the present-day elephants. The length of these ears could measure

around 30 cm (12 inches).

Tasmanian tigers

The largest carnivore marsupial, Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) is also known asTasmanian wolf. These animals are endemic to New Guinea and Tasmania in thecontinental Australia. It follows that these tigers were become extinct by the mid of20thcentury. Scientists have discovered numerous fossils that tell the story of thesetigers in early Miocene. It is also believed that Tasmanian tiger was the last existingspecies among its family. These wild animals had become extinct before theEuropean begins to settle in Australia; however, it continued to exist in Tasmaniatogether with other animals. One of the foremost reasons of their extinction is theTasmanian tigers hunting at an excessive scale; some other causes includeepidemic diseases, emergence of wild dogs, and habitat loss. These tigers were

considered to be apex predators. These species was not very much like placentalmammals but some of their general adaptations coincide with these mammals.Tasmanian devil is believed to be its closest relative which is still existing.Tasmanian tigers first emerged some 4 million years before. By the end 20 thcentury,last seven Tasmanian tigers fossils were discovered in the northwest Queensland.

Iberian wild goat that went extinct in 2000.
