Goals of presentation are for faculty members to understand: What Middle States is The continual process, and key episodes What it’s like – from both sides

Broad view of our obligations and of the accreditation process.

What is Middle States? The US Dept of Education does not accredit educational institutions or programs.  But they "recognize" accrediting agencies (within U.S.). Agencies are private educational associations Ensure that institutions meet quality standards Agencies must go through a recognition process (I’m not sure what this means)

What is Middle States? Middle States ‐ core values include:

Voluntary membership Self‐regulation and peer‐review Respect for unique mission of each institution and evaluation within that context.

“They” = Us Middle States ‐ Commissioners and Members are all academics and administrators from institutions in the region.   They are elected by member institutions.  They decide on the "Standards of Excellence" and all rules.

Peer Evaluators ‐ from similar colleges, usually within region.  Must go through training workshops. Ellen, Connie, Rebecca, Tom, Sue, Kai  Some understand us; some may not. (Talk more about this during the "What it's like")

First and foremost…Standard 7: Institutional AssessmentThe institution has developed and implemented an assessment process that evaluates its overall effectiveness in achieving its mission and goals and its compliance with accreditation standards.Standard 14: Assessment of Student LearningAssessment of student learning demonstrates that, at graduation, or other appropriate points, the institution’s students have knowledge, skills, and competencies consistent with institutional and appropriate higher education goals.

Page 11: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Why do they want Assessment?Assessment processes help to ensure that: Goals should be clear to the public Programs and resources should be directed at goals  The institution should be achieving its mission and goals.

The institution should be using what it learns from assessment

MS sees itself as mediating between Federal Government and institutions.

Page 12: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

What do they mean by “Assessment?”

1. Articulating our goals for student learning.

2. Offering experiences that allow students to achieve goals.

3. Looking at evidence about how well students are achieving our goals for them.

4. Using the evidence to inform what we do (teaching, curricular planning).  Assessing Student Learning and Institutional Effectiveness: Understanding Middle States Expectations, Middle States 2005.

Furthermore…“Effective assessments are simple rather than elaborate, and they may focus on just a few key goals in each program, unit, and curriculum.”

The Reality of Accreditation Middle States has very clear and detailed rules and expectations New evaluator training suggests potential rigidity  Self study and PRR workshops also suggest some rigidity Experience suggests much more flexibility—within bounds

MS liaison is key

Page 19: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Flexibility in Approach College has options in structuring Self Study

Address all standards “Comprehensive” Focus on special topics – “Comprehensive with emphasis” or “Selected Topics”

Integrate with planning

Key is to provide documentation to support assertions Particularly important for PRR

No team visit‐no chance to explain or demonstrate

Page 20: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Surprises in the process Some surprises

We were able to suggest possible team chairs and to ask for different team members

Importance of team chair in setting tone, redirecting focus

Everyone being accredited is nervous—partially because of the assessment but more broadly—you want your school to “do well.”

Page 21: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Serving as an evaluator How the process works

Very collegial Each team member has assigned Standards but everything gets discussed by the group

Good protection against one “stickler”

(Comments are based on two experiences, one of which was certainly not typical—but still informative.)

Page 22: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Serving as an evaluator How team members view their roles

Not as “inspectors” but as “consultants” Mindful of Middle States “rules” (e.g., whether to offer a suggestion or a recommendation)

Page 23: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

Serving as an evaluator

How the process is changing Increasingly common to write sections prior to visit

Investigate remaining questions during visit Increases importance of the Self Study

Page 24: Wordle of Suggestions Recommendation from 2009 Middle ... · Wordle of Suggestions & Recommendation from 2009 Middle States Visit Team Report

What can be most useful to us

The work that goes into preparing the Self Study Reflection on what we do Analysis of what we are doing and how well we are doing it

More valuable the more candid we are More valuable the more analytical we are
