World Geography Pre-AP Summer Assignment Health Careers High School

Course Overview:

World Geography is a yearlong course in which students examine people, places, and environments at local,

regional, national, and international levels from the spatial and ecological perspectives of geography. Students

describe the influence of geography on events of the past and present with emphasis on contemporary issues. This

course is structured around the conceptual units of the nature of geography, physical and environmental

geography, cultural geography, population geography, political geography, and economic geography. Each

conceptual unit will incorporate specific regional material that will enhance the subject-matter and unit of study.

The world we live in is complex. There is an interaction between human populations and their respective

countries that increases daily. A small step towards achieving greater geographic literacy is the ability to

understand and evaluate events that are happening worldwide. In order to achieve this a mandatory current

events assignment will be required.

Assignment Objective:

The purpose of this assignment is to reinforce the importance of current events in social studies discussions.

Knowledge and understanding of our world is necessary to facilitate any meaningful discussion in this class. Each

student will research and submit one current event portfolio. See detailed directions below on how to

complete your current events portfolio.

Due Date:

This will be collected the first class day of the new school year.

The Assignment:

You will create a current event portfolio containing a news or magazine article from an actual news agency from

each of the regions listed below. You will report on six different current events by searching articles within

appropriate international news sources. News organizations can be found online as well as an actual newspaper or

news magazine. Some examples are listed on the next page .

Each article is to be from a different region (see regions below). Read the article carefully and then fill out the

chart. To show location, color the country on the map. Decide which geographic theme best fits with the article

and write a summary. Write the news article title, source, and author in the source line and attach a copy of each

article in order to your portfolio.

Your portfolio submission will incorporate the following:

1. A completed map with the six different countries neatly colored a different color.

2. A completed global news article log with each article stapled in order.

3. Each separate article summary must include-

a) an introduction of the topics found within the article (overview)

b) an explanation of the main points, any opinions expressed, and if applicable (perspective)

c) a description of how the article relates to Geography (the article may focus on physical geography

or human geography (or the interaction between them)

NOTE- In Social Studies we write like a historian when discussing content- which means you do not use

I, me, or my in anyway unless you are asked to express your own thoughts and opinions.

4. Each summary should always use complete sentences, proper paragraph indentation, correct grammar,

correct spelling, correct capitalization, and correct punctuation.
