Dear all,

The snow is melting, temperatures are

rising, love is in the air, which means only one

thing: spring is around the corner in Toronto

and here at the English Language Program.

We would like to welcome you to another

exciting issue of WOW!

This is the Love & Food issue! On February

14th, students celebrated Valentine’s Day by

sending postcards to their families and

friends, some of which are featured in this

issue. Students also explored the diverse

cuisine of the city by reviewing some of

Toronto’s restaurants. Some students even

brought types of food from their home

countries to the ELP for their classmates to

enjoy! After all, food is a sure way to

someone’s heart.

In this issue, students reflect on current

pressing issues such as energy, euthanasia,

women’s rights and obesity. Others offer

accounts of their personal experiences and

say their goodbyes. Make sure to view our

activities calendar; with so many upcoming

events, there is definitely something for

everyone!

As always, we would like to thank every

instructor, staff and student who contributed

to the magazine. We would also like to

congratulate all of you who have been

accepted into universities and colleges, you

make us proud! Make sure to share your

success stories with us, so you can inspire

more students.

All the best,

Sherry Yuan Hunter

TIPS ON NETWORKING

Why is networking important? In society, networking is the best way to find a job or an internship. Your friend might suddenly have a job opportunity available and offered it to you, who knows! Networking is not compulsory, but definitely will be very helpful in life. The benefits of networking include meeting new prospects, getting new ideas and new insights, and more importantly developing contacts. People who know you personally are more likely to provide you with opportunities.

Networking is developing relationships with people such as friends, colleagues, or maybe even random people you meet at a cocktail party! I am not great at networking, but I do know some important points:

1. Introduce yourself! Someone has to start the conversation, why not let it be you?

2. Engage in a conversation to make it interesting. Talk with people, ask questions, and not just talk by yourself.

3. Ask for contact information, such as business cards or e-mails. (Maybe even Facebook, the social network!)

The last point is to follow up the next few days by sending e-mails to those people who met just to remind them of you, and remember to maintain a long-term relationship!
