WORSHIP IN THE SPIRIT
WHAT DO YOU DO?
Worship in the Spirit
God gave specific instructions for worshipThe Bible describes the various forms of worship in the words of his prophets and in his conversations with themObviously we want to be obedient and worship as he instructed us, but we are not doing it
Worship in the Spirit
What did he tell us to do?He first told us to sing. We can sing:
In our own language and musical idiom In other tongues both
Unknown Foreign languages
Singing is prayer and should be a conversation with God
Singing should bring us into an encounter with God
Worship in the Spirit
Exodus 15:1 TNIV Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: "I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.
2 Samuel 22:50 TNIV
Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.
Worship in the Spirit
Psalm 9:2 TNIV I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.
Psalm 33:1 TNIV Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
Lifting up Hands
Psalm 28:2 TNIV Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.
1 Timothy 2:8 TNIV Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.
Shout to the Lord
Shouts are commanded in worshipJob 8:21 TNIV
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
Psalm 27:6 TNIV Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
Dancing
Dancing is another way we express our worship2 Samuel 6:14 TNIV Wearing a linen
ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might
Psalm 149:3 TNIV Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel (tambourine) and harp.
Tongues
Speaking to him in heavenly language Acts 2:4
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 2:11Both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
Speaking and Singing in Tongues
Mark 16:17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues
1 Corinthians 14:5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
Prophecy
In the previous scripture it comments on prophecyThere are two kinds of prophecy
There is predictive prophecyThere is the application of God’s word to
current situationsThen there are words of knowledgeProphecy has to be judged as to its veracity by
other prophets
Prophecy
Prophecy is a desirable gift1 Corinthians 14:1
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
2 Peter 1:20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.
Prophecy
2 Peter 1:21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
1 John 4:1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
God Gives Gifts for Worship
1 Corinthians 12:9-11 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another
gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
Resting in the Spirit
When the Spirit is operant a Spirit filled person may pray for someone and they may rest in the SpiritMatthew 28:3-5 His appearance was like
lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
Resting in the Spirit
John 18:5,6 "I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
Demons Manifesting Themselves
God gave us power over demons. They are always anti Christ and when God is being worshipped they often reveal themselvesLuke 10:17
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."
Demons Manifesting themselves
Luke 13:32He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal
Mark 3:11Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, "You are the Son of God."
Deliverance
Deliverance from demons is a demonstration of God’s power and his love for the demon infested, Therefore, it is a form of worship
Jesus said that if persons did not believe in his words they should believe in the miracles he performed
Worship
Prophecy, Words of knowledge, resting in the Spirit, and deliverance are all part of the Lords communicating with us, but our worship is our communication with Him extolling his character, and giving thanks for his beneficence!
