A Letter from our Pastors

July, 2015

Dear Members and Friends of Faith,

We feel blessed beyond measure to be

in ministry and mission with you at this

time in the life of Faith UMC. Judy

McLaughlin our Sr. Lay Leader and

longtime member of Faith shared at a

ministry council meeting earlier this

year, “This is the most alive I have ever

seen our church!”

In the words of hymn writer Doris Akers,

There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place,

and I know that it’s the spirit of the Lord.

There are sweet expressions on each face,

and I know that it’s the presence of the

Lord.

The Spirit at Work

That spirit is touching and transforming

lives. 177 kids were embraced by the

love of God in this spirit-filled Church at

Everest Vacation Bible School this

summer. Some shared that they had

never heard about Jesus and his love. A

family that moved from China to North

Canton in June came to Faith and said,

“We are so happy we found this church.

We feel at home here.” This past

Sunday, two families visited Faith for the

first time. They said, “We have been

wanting to find a church. We will

definitely be back.”

The spirit that people experience at 300

Ninth St. NW, is the same spirit that

moves us into the community and the

world.

Also this summer, our high school youth

shared and experienced God’s love

through mission in the city of Cleveland.

Every month, the same spirit moves in

and through our Faith Kitchen volunteers

at Crystal Park in downtown Canton.

Stories abound!

We are a Mission Outpost

For 59 years, God’s spirit has called and

inspired this congregation to bold initiatives

to reach more people with the good news of

God’s love. Those initiatives have equipped

us with 48,000 square feet of building space

on 5.75 acres set in the heart of the

neighborhood. The church building was

designed to be a mission outpost where on

average 800 to 1,000 people each week

gather for worship and spiritual formation to

be equipped by God’s spirit to reflect and

share God’s love in the community and

around the world. The stewardship of that

vision and mission has now been entrusted

to us, the current congregation at Faith.

Envisioning and Shaping the Future

Today, God’s spirit is calling each of us as

members of the body of Christ to take the

next step in our journey of faith, to become

more deeply committed disciples, to

examine our lives in light of the grace we

have received and align our collective

resources to expand the mission and

ministry to which God is calling Faith

Church. May this be a time when all of us

feel anointed by God’s spirit to act on faith,

giving and serving generously so that those

who come after us will be blessed as we are

blessed.

Anointed for ministry together,

Cara and Steve

On behalf of Faith United Methodist Church we

want to welcome you and invite you to participate

in Worship and Worship Arts ministry! Faith UMC

believes worshipping God is central to our being.

We do so by joining in community together to

celebrate our history and our journey towards

greater fullness in the body of Christ.

Opportunities to participate and contribute to

worship permits a "whole person" response to God

by instilling the freedom to worship God with

intellect, emotions, personality, senses, and body.

It gives us a corporate identity or the sense of

belonging to the organic unity of humanity. This

means the worship of the individual finds its

completion in the larger, public worshiping

community.

Faith United Methodist Church also offers a wide

pallet of musical and artistic opportunities.

Recognizing the important contributions of music

and inherent connection between the arts and faith

formation, our worship arts program seeks to mold

participants spiritually, socially, and intellectually

to be community-centered, servant leaders for the

world.

Worship and Worship Arts Welcome See the Celebration. Hear the Celebration. Be the Celebration

As such , you are invited to participate in any of our

worship arts ensembles and opportunities to

experience the transforming power of worship and

the arts in your life.

You will notice this view book invites you to See the

Celebration, Hear the Celebration, and therefore

Be the Celebration. This is the 2015-2016 Worship

and Worship Arts mantra at Faith UMC. We hope

that you, indeed, experience and come to know the

celebration of Christ.

Please join us in the journey at Faith UMC through

the many wonderful opportunities available in

Worship and Worship Arts. There is a place for you

in this life giving ministry!

In vital ministry together,

Daniel Parsley

Worship Arts Coordinator

Forming of the Whole Self – Seeing the Celebration A Journey of Faith

Sandy Vaughn, Worship Ministry Chair

Cindy Wilcox, Worship Ministry Associate Chair

The arts are vital to our worship experience. The

psalms call us to sing, to make a joyful noise, to

praise him with trumpet sound...with lute and

harp. Music and all the arts call forth, from the

depth of our souls, praise, gratitude, joy,

compassion, hope, grief, longing, and a drive

toward wholeness for all of creation.

At FUMC we have rich history of weaving the arts

into the fabric of our worship. Today we strive for

excellence in providing opportunities for all to

participate in and/or experience the arts (music,

liturgical dance, visual arts) to deepen and enrich

our worship experience. There are opportunities

for all ages and for expression of a wide range of

artistic talents. Whether you choose to participate

(in one of our choirs, in a select vocal or

instrumental ensemble, in our Modern Worship

Ensemble or other artistic pursuits) or simply to

experience the fruits of these artistic endeavors in

worship, we hope your worship experience is

enriched by our worship arts program.

-Cindy Wilcox

Participation in worship permits a "whole

person" response to God by instilling the

freedom to worship God with intellect,

emotions, personality, senses, and body. It gives

us a corporate identity or the sense of belonging

to the organic unity of humanity. This means the

worship of the individual finds its completion in

the public worship of the larger worshiping

community.

To truly experience worship I believe it

becomes necessary in a person’s personal

journey, to fully engage and participate in

Worship. Every one of us has a God given talent

that we bring to the Worship experience. To

discover that talent we need to “dive in” and

participate. Leave your comfort zone and try

each of these opportunities. You will be assured

that you will gain more than you give!

-Sandy Vaughn

Page 6: Worship & Worship Arts 2015-2016

Opportunities to serve in worship are available for all three of our Sunday worship services 8:30 AM Traditional 9:45 AM Modern 11:00 AM Creatively Traditional Additional opportunities to participate, oversee, and chair worship participant areas are available for all! Here are a few highlights: Acolytes Bring the light of Christ to light the candles on the altar and take that light back out into the world after worship. Their acts signify the presence of the Lord in His house. Communion Steward Communion is an act that points beyond itself to God and is a way that God graciously shares love with us. Stewards provide and coordinate the necessary elements such as bread and juice along with volunteers for services where communion is celebrated. Ushers A church usher is a person who helps ensure a smoothly running service and who ministers to people in a variety of practical ways. Greeters As the churchgoers arrive, the greeters will act as doorkeepers, greeting each person with a smile, shaking hands, and assisting as needed. Liturgists Liturgists are lay readers of scripture and may provide leadership in services. Altar Guild/Worship Design Enhances the worship experience by displays/decorations in both the Sanctuary and Family Life Center that exemplify the liturgical theme and season Sound/Lights When altered and adjusted throughout the service, can serve as an enhancement of the Worship experience. Funerals/Weddings We are happy to offer support and event planning for funerals and weddings at the Church. Music and Worship Arts Music has a message that gives thanks and brings praise to the Lord. Those that hear the music and experience arts are made ready to receive the Word that will be preached. The arts and preaching are not in competition in worship; they are complementary to each other and allow for Christ-honoring worship.

Getting Involved Joining the Journey– Hearing the Celebration

Just as everyone is invited to the Lord’s table for

communion, everyone is invited to sing. Singing is

not reserved for those who have had musical

training. Should we not put to good use the one

musical instrument that is always with us- the voice?

Every other instrument falls short to the voice as a

tool of expression, because no instrument can add

words to its sounds. The unity of poetry and music is

only found in song.

As the organ or worship ensemble leads

congregational singing, it is with the intention of

supporting, guiding, and inspiring the congregation

in worship. Let us together strive to live out John

Wesley’s exhortation to “Sing lustily and with a

good courage.”

Soli Deo Gloria!

Heather Cooper

Organist

Sing All!

On a Sunday morning, two books can be found in

the pew. These two books contain the history,

wisdom, morals, and beliefs of the people of God.

They are with us in our times of celebration and

sorrow, of conviction and uncertainty, of hope and

despair. The Bible and the hymnal are

cornerstones of our faith.

A hymnal is an ever-changing collection of songs,

chosen from the thousands of hymns written to the

glory of God over the centuries. The collection of

hymns, as found in The United Methodist Hymnal of

1989, includes hymns ranging from the familiar

words of Martin Luther and Charles Wesley, to the

recent offerings of Duke Ellington and Natalie

Sleeth. The very selection of which hymns to

include in a hymnal defines the people who use it.

The Methodist church embraces hymns from

across the globe, and in different styles, alongside

the stalwart body of traditional hymns.

The Methodist church has a long history of being

“a singing people.” In John Wesley’s Directions

for Singing (found in the preface to the hymnal) he

admonishes congregants to “Sing all. Let not a

slight degree of weakness or weariness hinder

you. Strive to unite your voices together, so as to

make one clear melodious sound.” On Sunday

morning, the entire body of Christ stands as we

sing our beliefs together before the altar of God.

Page 15: Worship & Worship Arts 2015-2016

What is that Noise? Hello! My name is Matt Lautanen and I am the new

Modern Worship Arts Coordinator for Faith UMC.

I have really enjoyed working with Faith’s staff and

congregation during the past few months to

prepare our 9:45 service and look forward to what

is in store for us down the road. For those

unfamiliar with the Modern Worship service, you

may hear the band warming up down the hall early

Sunday morning, or may hear us playing our last

song as you prepare for worship at the 11:00

service. Either way, some thoughts may go

through your head resembling words like: “What

is that noise!?”

We live in a beautiful age of diversity when it

comes to how people come to worship our Savior,

but those who have attended a church service on

Sunday morning can also attest to the fact that

tensions can sometimes rise over musical selection

and style within these services. Arguments over

the years have claimed that modern worship lacks

spiritual depth, while other state that hymnal

singing is boring and irrelevant to modern times.

This tension has been the cause to some major

splits within the church throughout the past. Even

today, many can attest to some of these fallouts

within their own communities. How then, can such

a large diversity of people come to find common

ground in worship? My first impulse is to take the

route that our children in Sunday School use when

shouting “Jesus!” as the answer to all of their

teacher’s questions, and while there is no truer

answer, maybe we can take a deeper look at the

situation.

At first glance, this article may seem like I am

trying to convince everyone to come down the hall

to the Family Life Center on Sunday mornings, but

where as I would always love to meet new people

to worship with, I come from a position of loving

both traditional four part hymnal singing, and

modern worship.

You could just as easily find me flipping through

the pages of The United Methodist Hymnal, using

the music staves to guide me through “Great is

Thy Faithfulness,” as well as finding me looking

up at a projector which displays contemporary

artist Hillsong's "Oceans," guitars and synths filling

the background with ambience.

To ask me if one style of worship is better than the

other is really the wrong question because this

assumes that worship itself is a style. We must

constantly remind ourselves (definitely myself

included) that worship is about glorifying and giving

praise to God, not about whether we should use drum

sets, organs, or didgeridoos to do so.

So then why sing modern praise songs? There is the

belief that if music represents the culture of its time,

sounding similar to the secular songs being produced

during that era, then it is not proper for use in worship.

I think this view is one that we should reexamine.

While Romans 12:2 clearly warns us about conforming

to the things our world, we do need to remember that

God created beauty in this world as well. We are a

finite people, placed in a period of time, and it is

inescapable to be influenced by the age that we live

in. It is this reason that most of us don’t attend worship

in our leather-strapped sandals and woolen robes on

Sunday morning. Just as our clothes have changed

over the past few centuries, so has our music. We can't

escape our time period, and to place a negative label

on everything that comes from within a generation is to

really place a limit on God's ability to work through

any medium. I think it is beautiful and an absolute

testament to God's creativity when we see

just how many ways people can worship him.

I think that when it comes to worship, the overall goal

is to always be aware of who we are putting first when

we enter into a time of worship. If we can only enter

into worship after a prerequisite of personal standards

are met, then we might need to refocus our hearts. I

want to end by leaving everyone with a quote from

Stephen Miller of Relevant Magazine. Miller writes that,

"We are not entitled to make the call on whether or not

we feel like worshiping God and building up His

Church. His glory does not wait for us to like the music

before He becomes worthy of all our worship." God is

worthy of all our praise at all times.

Joining the Journey– Being the Celebration

Choral Scholars Program

The “Choral Scholars Program ”at Faith United Methodist Church is designed to support the education

and further growth of high school or college age youth who are interested in possible careers in sacred

music or music ministry. Our Choral Scholars program began in the fall of 2014 through a gift from the

Endowment Fund and has set the groundwork for a transformational program in the lives of these

students. The educational opportunity provides a means for the Choral Scholar participant to form

concrete relationships with choral ensemble members and to learn what being a part of music ministry

entails. Furthermore, the opportunity to collaborate as a part of a non-academic musical ensemble

provides unique and valuable experience for students, both musical and on a broader experiential scale.

As a worshipping community, we can be charged to support and endorse music education and sacred

music careers as valid vocational choices.

As a worshipping congregation, our Choral Scholar Program has symbiotic, or mutually beneficial, effects

for our music ministry program. Since 2014, we have seen the gifts and skills of Choral Scholar

participants further empower and revitalize lay empowerment in the choral ensembles. Simultaneously,

these students form genuine, Christ centered relationships within the congregation and are able to find a

church home both within a musical ensemble and in the greater community. Several of our Choral

Scholars have found a home in the Schola Cantorum, FUMC’s auditioned chamber ensemble. FUMC’s

Choral Scholar program provides opportunities to form and mentor young musicians and is a direct

collation to FUMC Core Values through our commitment to Welcome, Growth, Outreach, and Worship.

We look forward to another wonderful season of our Choral Scholars program at Faith United Methodist

Church. Should you wish to learn more information about this program or how to support the mission of

the FUMC Choral Scholars program, please contact Daniel Parsley, Worship Arts Coordinator and

Director of Chancel Music.
