WORTHING HAS A STRONG HISTORY OF MARKETS with records of them dating backas far as 1810. Wednesday is Market Day when the market joins the retail shops inMontague Street; Worthing’s main shopping precinct. In the 1990’s the market washeld in a Car Park on the outskirts of Town but declining footfall and reducing stallnumbers meant the future of the market was uncertain. The Worthing Town CentreInitiative worked with the Council, town centre businesses and the market operatorto move the market to the High Street and in 2002 it launched in its current location. The market has around 40 different stalls offering a diverse product offer from fruitand veg, meat, clothing, gifts, street food and much much more.

WORTHING was seen by many other towns as leading the way in developing themarket to help revitalise the Town Centre; an idea later supported by Mary Portas inher report on regenerating High Streets to Government.

Worthing has many other markets that operate at events and on the 3rd Saturday ofeach month The Emporium is in Montague Street offering street food, craft and otherproducts. To find out more go to www.worthingtowncentre.co.uk

A Bit About ArtichokesThe outer leaves of the Artichoke are only for decoration, and the soft flesh and mince should be eaten and enjoyed byyou and your friends. 22 I Worthing Food & Drink Festival

WORTHING HAS A LONG MARITIME HISTORYpredating its late 18th-century emergence as afashionable holiday and residential town. Fishing was a

major economic activity for centuries, and still retains apresence on Worthing's shingle shoreline.

The formerly sandy beach has changed over time, partly be-cause of sea defence work carried out to alleviate concerns over

flooding. Fishing was important to Worthing's economy from the16th century or earlier, when it was a modest village, until the early 20th

century, but the numbers of boats and men employed were small.

Early fishermen supplemented their income by working the land for part of the year as well, andsome inhabitants who farmed for most of the year also fished occasionally. Fishing tended to runin families for many generations. As well as being sold locally, fish was being exported to towns inSussex and Surrey by the late 18th century. The main catches were mackerel and herring, supplemented by various crustaceans. A large oyster bed was found in 1823, and it yielded 50million oysters within the first year; but overfishing led to its exhaustion within a decade.

Today there are still many families still making there living from fishing from the beach mostlycatching. Mackerel, smooth hound, cuttle fish, sea bass, whole place, crabs and lobsters, skateand the odd dog fish.

Local fishermen are a real asset to Worthing as inshore fishermen tend to fish on the same patchof sea, targeting different fish according to the seasons. They’re the stewards of our coastalwaters, it’s in their interest to make sure local fish stocks are healthy and stay that way. Worthingfishermen use static gear which has very little impact on the seabed and is very selective.Unlike some industrial fishing methods, there’s very little waste.

One great local catch is Brill, Scophthalmus rhombus, Brill are the smaller, rounder cousins of thewell known turbot. They have slightly smaller flakes when cooked and a sweeter taste than theirlarger relatives.

Another seafront favourite is the whelk, Buccinidae undatum. The humble whelk is an overlookedlittle snail, which is a real shame. Nearly all the whelks we catch here are sent to Korea, wherethey're considered a delicacy. If you've ever eaten fruits de mer in a French restaurant then you'llknow exactly how delicious they can be. They're meatier than cockles and winkles and have adelicate flavour which is shown off best by cooking them simply.

If you would like to get involved or just gorge yourself on the sea delights you can contact ourFisherman society Secretary Allan 07770 776512 or join the local buying organisation thefantastic catch box Worthing: www.Catchbox.coop

cocktail LYNCHBURG LEMONADE

TipRun tall glass under tap andfreeze before you pour yourdrink. You can also soaklime leaves in lemon for 24hrs and add 1 to drink for anextra twist)

How to Make aLynchburg LemonadeA cocktail with style and history.

THIS DRINK WAS CREATED AND GIVEN it’s name by Alabamarestaurant and lounge owner Tony Mason in 1980.

It was the subject of the 1987 court case Mason v. Jack Daniel Distillery. Masonalleged that a Jack Daniel's distillery sales representative visited his restaurant andsomehow learned the recipe for the drink, which he contended was a trade secret.

A year later, Jack Daniel's launched a national campaign to promote the drink. Masonsubsequently filed suit in the Madison County Circuit Court, seeking over US $13million in compensatory and punitive damages for misappropriating his recipe. Thecourt ruled in Mason's favour but decided to award him no money. After the trial, thepresiding judge offered to pay Mason one dollar out of his own pocket which Masonrejected. In Mason v. Jack Daniel Distillery, Mason appealed the decision to theAlabama Civil Appellate court, which found that Mason could be entitled to more thannominal compensatory damages and overturned the decision, ordering a new trial.

To make a LYNCHBURG LEMONADE (use a highball glass):

1.5 Shots of Bourbon 1 shot triple sec 1 shot lemon juice

Shake in cocktail maker with ice and strain into a highball glass half filledwith ice and top up with real lemonade. Garnish with lemon.

“Fancy a Swift OneOld Chap?”

LIVING IN AND AROUND WORTHING you have atyour finger tips some of the UK best national parks, beautiful beaches and idyllic rivers. West Sussex is also notshort of award winning country pubs and to keep them well stockedwe have more than our fare share of micro and small brewers. With approximately over 100 in Sussex there are not enough weekendsto visit them in a year.

The Award Winning Long Man Brewery is based at Church Farm, Litlington, Sussexin the Heart of the South Downs National Park. It’s beers include Long Blonde,Best Bitter, Sussex Pride, American Pale Ale, Old Man and GoldenTipple and theseare now available in over 80 outlets throughout Sussex and Kent.

If you don’t fancy a short trip Worthing has its very ownwine estate. It has just one a national ward and just afterhaving a devastating crop last year in 2013. HighdownVineyard nestles on the southern slopes of the SouthDowns between Littlehampton and Worthing. The vineyardwas originally planted in 1985 with six varieties of grapes;three red – Rondo, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir, and threewhite – Bacchus, Schonberger and Reichensteiner. In 2005and 2006 there were more plantings of Pinot Noir and anadditional white variety – Chardonnay. The open site enjoysfree draining chalk soil and gentle westerly breezes, whichensure a good airflow through the vineyard. The site alsobenefits from being in area with some of the lowest rainfalland highest sunshine in the country. In terms of Englishviticulture it is an excellent site. The vineyard leads onto theDowns so it is also the perfect place to start a walk.

There are many other Breweries to look out for in close proximity toWorthing: Ballards, Hepworth, Harvey & Son (Lewes) Ltd,Langham Brewery, Kissingate Brewery,The Dark Star Brewing Co. Ltd and Beachy Head Brewery.
