Context in rhetoric is important.

1890s (Dewey): Panic of 1893. Rise in Pragmatism (practical education).

1990s (Steele): Only ~20 years earlier, President Ford was the first to consider cutting the budgets for entitlement programs.

1830s (Emerson): Declaration of Independence is only ~60 years old and philosophy was entering in “Modern” thought.

2. Make a master list of all the rhetorical choices you found as a group.

3. Rate them by viability/tiers

Example:
