We are so pleased for this ninth edition of X-treme. Last year was very important for Peru in its tourism promotion since Machu Picchu

was considered a worldwide natural wonder. The trekking was also rewarded with the designation of the 4-day route Mollepata-Salcantay-Machu Picchu by the National

Geographic Magazine as one of the best Adventure excursion for 2008. However, this development would not have been possible without the right decision of PROMPERU, which is

making a bet for the very successful participation of Peru in International Fairs focused on the Adventure segment such as “The Outdoor Adventure Show” in Canada, and the “Adventure Travel

Expo” carried out in United States.

Besides these 2 important events, we should also mention our successful participation with the support of PROMPERU since 2005 in the Tourism Fairs “Adventure Affair” focused on the European market, and carried out

in Gante, Flandes Region of the Kingdom of Belgium. We presented a stand with information about the destination ‘Perú Aventura’ (Peru Adventure), where we provided promotional brochures, informative folders, multimedia CDs and

we also showed some videos. Our X-treme magazine made 2 presentations in the main auditorium for travel agents and audience in general about the alternative Inca Trail Mollepata and Trekking in the White Range. Jointly with the Flanders Expo

organization from Belgium, a trip to Peru for 4 persons was awarded as main prize for the visitors who assisted to the event, through a contest with national circulation magazines in Belgium such as: “Zone 09” and “P-magazine” that reached all over Belgium and

Netherlands. X-treme offered them 10 days that included rafting in Lunahuana, a trekking in the White Range and a tour to Chavin de Huantar. All this adventure was covered by the ‘Far Out magazine’ which published the tour in 6 pages. On July, the Team O’Neill from Belgium visited us for

doing surfing in Peru. In this edition we present the article of this trip.

Alpamayo Trekking Expedition 12 days + Pisco ClimbingText: Promperu - X-treme Peru Travel.Fotos: www.xtremeperu.com

Located 410 Km northeast of Lima it’s capital Huaraz is called “The Peruvian Swiss”. The Cordillera Blanca is protected inside the Huascaran National Park, a paradise of snow-capped mountains, 663 glaciers, 269 beautiful green lakes and 41 rivers, plus 33 archaeological sites. Its flora and fauna are an addition attraction featuring 800 varieties of blossoming flowers, as well as Andean condors, vicunas, puma, taruca or Andean deer and well over a hundred species of birds.

Hatun Machay Stone Forest

Text: Marcelo MoralesPictures: Chacraraju Expe.

Just imagine blue sky, 3,400 mts high, perfect and all kinds of shape rocks; this wonderful place is one of the “new spots” for sport climbing in Peru. Since a couple years the development of new climbing routes made possible now to count on with a rock climbing school having more than 100 routes from 5.8 to 12. from 15 to 60 mts. The quality of the rock is good similar to Huayllay Rock Forest in Cerro de Pasco, but with the difference of the altitude here is lower than the 4,000 mts. This place is located 75 km south of Huaraz 1 hour and 30 minutes driving back the way to Lima; it has lot of impressive geological attractions, and a big stone called Hatun Machay which means big cave in Quechua. One day a group leaded by Rommel a local guide from huaraz, Chacararaju agency, went to have some fun, for sure they enjoyed a lot this experience and to be witness of this expedition here are the pics from that day, thanks to cabezon and the good vibes people from huaraz, next year for sure I will try to climb there with some friends from Galaxia or maybe do some mountain bike with the Riders local team: Franco, Tono, Narizuan and “loco Nene”, UIAA mountain guide who really rip the mountain bike. Always Huaraz has a lot to offer is just your choice to enjoy life or just enjoy your direct tv. Hatun Machay also offers trekking routes, archaeological tourism and horse rides in the Forest. For videos and info about climbing programs in the area just check: www.xtremeperu.com

CLIMATE

The weather in Hatun Machay is tropical but quite dry, the area has a dry season from May to September, and a wet season, from December to April. The dry season is characterized by having sunny, warm and dry mornings and afternoons, and cold nights (temperatures droops to 0° C) with a clear sky, showing nice stars nights. The wet season is characterized by having sunny, dry and warm mornings (until some 35 °C full sun) with rainy afternoons and nights, sometimes violent and with more temperate temperatures.Despite the wet weather, you may be lucky and see some spectacular mountain views between the clouds. Even during the dry season, however, you should be prepared for occasional rains, hail or snow storms.

HOW TO GET THERE

The archaeological complex of Hatun Machay and the stone forest is located near the Community of Pampas Chico district, province of Recuay, of Ancash, at 4290 mts.In the region of Ancash, at 69 km to the south from the city of Huaraz, on the Black Mountain Range, in the km 131, before the Conococha lake; one of the most important petrel’s forests of

the country is located. A dirt road trail is crossed half an hour towards the west until arriving at a little valley to take another deflection. From Huaraz there is no public transportation straight to the place.

SUGGESTIONS - It is possible to take a regular bus towards Lima and ask to be dropped off in km 131, from there

to walk by deflection to the west, 1:30 hs untill you get in Hatun Machay.* Another way to arrive there is taking a public bus until the town of Catac; from here taxis can be taken to Hatun Machay. * Rent a van or a private transport to Hatun Machay along with a driver from huaraz should be not too expensive about always dealing price with the driver in advance later no surprises.

Surftrip Peru 2009Team O’Neill Belgium

Support my trip to Peru Project

www.swell.be, www.ifweweresurfrichgirls.be, www.boardx.be, www.boardingaddicts.be

SURFTRIP PERU 2009 from O’Neill Belgium team

Photos: X-treme Sports Magazine, Jan Bijl O’Neill Belgium.

The story of this trip dates back to the beginning of 2007, in the town of Gante, place where the main offices of O’Neill Belgium are located. I had to interview in this place to Chris Verghote, Marketing Manager of O’Neill for the X-treme Magazine of Peru.

In that interview we talked about the training of the team in Belgium, so Peru was mentioned and we invited the surfers of the O’Neill Team to come to train and know the waves of our country. It’s just on January 2009 that taking up again the topic of a Surf trip to Peru I contacted some friends from ‘BoardX’ to organize a surf trip for first time to Peru for a Belgian delegation, with the benefits that this would bring for everybody, the country like touristic destination would be benefited from direct promotion in the European surfing community. Surfers would have the possibility to surf on beaches recognized by their wonderful waves all over the world and try the longest left wave of the world in Chicama knowing another culture and inherited habits.

The Trip

After coordinate the plan for the trip, we decided to join the potential participants to watch the film PEEL PERU PROJECT with some pizzas, soft drinks and Belgian beers, and they were only astonished with the waves and the country, the rest were only papers to fill out and the trip was just a reality with fixed date and everything necessary.

The Project

The idea of the trip was perfect but costs were high, Peru is a country located at the other side of the globe and only tickets meant a trip to Bali, a paradise for these surfers. Then, our X-treme magazine decided to support this Project and in that way we started to look for any help for this trip and a sponsor folder was also created. The trip would be useful for filming a Peruvian movie and publish a special report with cover sheet included in the widest coverage magazine ‘Swell’ distributed in Belgium and Netherlands.

With this presentation we obtained the participation of LAN Airlines Belgium and PROMPERU as an official organization for promoting the tourism in Peru. During the months prior to the surf trip, we received some offers of support for the expedition, one of these was the Hotel Chicama Surf Resort that provided the group with one night in its premises, the hotel is only a surf resort with all possible services available, from Jacuzzi, sauna, gymnasium to zodiac boat that will take you to the first section of the longest left wave of the world, you only surf to the end and the boat will make the work, a real pleasure.

In Mancora, the Loki del Mar Hotel admitted the team for one night and the truth is that the party atmosphere was the best. You must check other surfpoints for bigger waves, staying one night at LOKI was one amazing experience. It was hard to wake up next day and continue the trip towards Lobitos, but that day, to stay up all night watching breaking ‘El Hueco’ was very stimulating for all members of the group. We immediately settled in the ‘Aitama Surfcamp’ of my friend the Vasco Unai, the surfcamp is just in front of the point and it’s possible to see from there how the waves are breaking during the whole day. At the end of May there were passing by this beach Rob Machado and other worldwide pro-surfers running big tubes and perfect waves in Lobitos and Chicama that were published in the special edition of August in the American magazine ‘Surfer Magazine’. They also filmed a movie for the brand Hurley. Lately, Peru is undoubtedly in the crosshair of the worldwide surfing. The Surftrip

The trip consisted of a week surfing near Punta Hermosa where they tried beaches such as Puerto Viejo, Punta Rocas, Señoritas and Caballeros. In this last beach, there was an event “Integration Day Punta Hermosa-Belgium” with the participation of local surfers and surfers from Belgium and Netherlands. Results:

Lobitos Waves

The first day we were waiting for a flooding, there were waves, ‘this is magic, what a long wave and with such a force, this is the paradise, we stay here’, this is what I heard after the members of the O’Neill team entered to the sea. The idea was to stay 2 days and we finally stayed 4 days and we were very sad for leaving. This beach has 4 points: El Hueco, La Frontera, Lobitos and Los Muelles that operate only when the sea is big,

this inhospitable place almost out of this world has the best waves of the Peruvian North. Very early on the second day the session was in El Hueco where the photographer Jan Bijl could take a picture to Niels in a tube in El Hueco, this picture took part of the contest to be in the cover sheet of the Swell Magazine from Belgium, the third day, Los Muelles was not in its right moment but we also enjoyed it. During a previous trip, Rob Machado and his delegation enjoyed the Lobitos waves.

Chicama, Paradise of Waves

After the transfer to Talara, we started the trip to Trujillo. When arriving to the Malabrigo Port, the waves were medium since the flooding has been the

day before; however, those small but perfect waves besides the fact of being tugged with a boat until the point made the place a very pleasant location to stay. To run the longest left wave of the world was an incredible feeling. In the Chicama Surf Resort we were very well treated and the place was simply the best, the top level tourism has an appropriate place for the demanding public due to quality and special service.

Huanchaco, the last destination

After travelling overnight we arrived to the Huanchaco Port, we settled there in the Naylamp Hostel and backpacker camping in front of the sea. At this moment of the trip with many sick members of the team, the group relaxed the last 2 days since the intensive

surfing of the last week left the group satisfied, then the third day we were starting the trip to Lima, where the trip would finish and the adventure that the O’Neill team experienced in Peru will stay marked in their lives forever, Peru is one of the most consistent places on earth to find always good waves. Xtreme Peru Travel designed a 14 days program including uncrowded surf spots as Puerto Viejo and some other secret spots wich is better to kep them unknown.

Presentation in Belgium of the Film “Support my trip to Peru”

The movie about Peru will be presented in Belgium in the cinema of the Blankemberge pier on 26/09 with the movies “O’Neill Big Balls on Fire” and “Sebastian Indian Social Project”. These movies are part of the concept developed by O’Neill Riders Initiatives of Europe. The movie will be presented to the members of the Belgium surfer community.

O’NEILL THE MISSION FRENCH POLYNESIA

Tahitian big wave charger Michel Bourez sealed a memorable victory on home waters on Friday night following the final day of action at the second edition of O’Neill The Mission. The final day of this ultimate freesurf contest challenge capped an incredible week for the surfers competing for their share of the US$ 50,000 total prize purse in the paradise setting of French Polynesia. Boarding the luxury Haumana yacht some six days ago off the tiny atoll of Fakarava in the Tuamotus, the eight surfers returned to the starting point for a contest-ending rider-judged video review session to determine who would walk away with the champion’s title and US$ 25,000 winner’s check. After Thursday’s explosive sessions on the right hand wave at Teporioha Pass, contest organizers and surfers decided to switch the action over to the left wave on Friday morning for the final session of the week-long trip. With only a few hours to go before the evening’s voting session, surfers had one final window in which to nail any aspects they felt were missing from their latest edits.

Come nightfall, it was time to sit back and enjoy the show as each surfer presented their very finest highlights from the week. Standout moments included former ASP Men’s World Tour surfer Howse’s trademark off-the-lip snaps, Justin Mujica’s timeless floaters and seemingly endless tube rides signed by Maui Young Gun Clay Marzo and French Polynesia’s Manoa Drollet. Speaking after all eight clips had been played, reigning champion Ian Walsh said: “Wow! There was so much good surfing this week, it makes picking a winner especially difficult this time around. We all had a great time from the moment we boarded the boat. Michel and Clay both ripped so I think we’ll definitely see both of them on the podium. Let’s wait and see.” Once the votes had been counted, 29-year-old big wave charger Manoa Drollet had done enough to claim 3rd place thanks in no small part to his exceptional choice of waves and incredible tube riding talent. Having grown up in the shadow of world-famous reef breaks including Teahupoo, Drollet made home advantage pay handsomely throughout the contest. Reflecting on the whole week,

Drollet said: “Even though the contest took place in French Polynesia, we still managed to find waves I’d never surfed before which is pretty special for me.” Edging out Drollet to claim the runner’s-up spot was 17-year-old Maui sensation Clay Marzo. The dark horse of the contest amazed everyone with some of the week’s most progressive surfing and has gone a long way to cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s next big things. O’Neill The Mission 2007, however, undoubtedly belonged to 21-year-old Tahitian ripper Michel Bourez. Crowned ASP Europe Champion in 2006, Bourez has blazed a path to glory all week long with incredible performances during every official session. With the winner’s trophy clasped between his hands, Bourez said: “I’m really proud to win here, especially so close to Tahiti. Everyone surfed great this week and perhaps my aerials were enough to push me out in front. I’m just really happy Manoa and I finished in the top three, see you all next year I hope!”
