It’s a New Year and a time when most people are taking inventory of the past year’s success, failures, both seized and missed opportuni-ties. Regardless of what happened in 2013, the year is gone to never return. You’ll never be able to get those days back. That means that it is time to move forward into a new day and embrace what God has in store for you in this season. Are you an in-dividual that makes New Year’s resolu-tions every January to only toss them down the drain by mid February. The key is to change your mindset and make everyday count. Everyday can be a resolution, a day of change, and accomplishments. Making plans to predict your life over a period of 365 days can be overwhelming for many as some can only plan from day to day, definitely an entire year can be challenging. Many that do, set them-selves up for failure. It’s that one

moment when something goes wrong or is thrown off track, when individuals throw in the towel and plans are de-railed.When, in fact it is always good to make plans. This practice should be devel-oped with a long-term goal in mind,

along with several short-term mile-stones to measure success. This strat-egy helps to maintain encouragement along the way. However, one must acknowledge that although some-times these plans may not turn out as planned. God holds the master plan to each of our lives. Make the necessary steps and adjustments to keep moving forward. Pray and seek God for what his

plan and assignment is if you feel that you are out of sync and noth-ing is moving in your favor. It is true that every season brings about change. Some of these changes, good or bad, will alter your life forever. I am here to tell you to

embrace this season of new-ness happening in your life. Trust that it is part of your individual customized blue print designed to shape, mold, and move you into your spiritual purpose and as-signment. Don’t get caught up into what hap-pened but ask yourself, why did it happen. If you

can capture these moments and make every one count as a lesson learned, then you will have achieved more than the average person that started the year off desiring change verses being the change that they want to see.

Nedra Ball, Marketing Director of Xcellence, Inc. launches “Presidential Insurance Benefits & Con-sulting Group, Inc.” as Vice President of Agency Operations alongside longtime business partner Kevin Beckton, President, in Central Florida. The healthcare reform law has changed the culture of the Health Insurance Industry. PIBCG’s main focus this year is to ensure as many people as possible are well informed and enrolled in Healthcare. Listed be-low are a few facts about how the law may pertain to you!

Pay lower costs for premiums each month! In the Health Insurance Marketplace you may be able to lower the costs of your health insurance coverage by paying lower monthly premiums. You’ll see the amount of savings you’re eligible for when you fill out your Marketplace application. Prices shown for insurance plans will reflect the lower costs.

These lower costs are handled with a tax credit called the Advance Premium Tax Credit. But these tax cred-its can be applied directly to your monthly premiums, so you get the lower costs immediately.

Savings depends on income and family sizeThe amount you save depends on your family size and how much money your family earns. In general, if your income falls within the following ranges you’ll qualify to save money on your premiums in 2014. The lower your income within these ranges, the more you’ll save. (The amounts below are based on 2013 numbers and are likely to be slightly higher in 2014 – facts courtesy of Healthcare.gov) • $11,490 to $45,960 for individuals• $15,510 to $62,040 for a family of 2• $19,530 to $78,120 for a family of 3• $23,550 to $94,200 for a family of 4• $27,570 to $110,280 for a family of 5• $31,590 to $126,360 for a family of 6• $35,610 to $142,440 for a family of 7• $39,630 to $158,520 for a family of 8

ALL ABOARD, JOURNEY TO XCELLENCE!Xcellence 2014 vision is to bring leaders of the community togeth-er who strive to achieve xcel-lence. How do I define xcellence? First and foremost, “Xcellence is a Mindset.” I first accepted this during the early years of starting the company. As unfortunate as it was, I learned quickly that not ev-eryone that says they desire xcel-lence in their life has a mindset to achieve it. For those commu-nity leaders that have been seek-

ing to connect with other posi-tive-minded leaders, Xcellence provides the perfect platform. We strive and continue to build collaborations, partnerships, and programs to meet these de-mands. Xcellence 4 initiatives are spiritual, social, business, and outreach. Check out some of the initiatives in place for our community leaders that commit to taking this journey with us in 2014.

The gift of life in itself is the most precious gift from God. Dr. Edith Peterson Mitchell ministerial assign-ment as a Board Certified Medical and Gastrointes-tinal Oncologist and Program Leader for Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, lo-cated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, affords her the opportunity to “Build a Legacy of Life” through her works. She is also the Associate Director for Diversity Programs and the Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities for the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. Being from the small rural town of Brownsville, Ten-nessee, an area with very limited medical services during her childhood, she has now served individuals from all over the country. both community service initiatives and outreach to give those individuals an opportunity to have quality medical care, while also addressing both preventive and awareness of health conditions that affect those specific areas. Although she is not one to brag, her list of accom-plishments range over 4 decades. Her educational endeavors began in 1969 with a B.S. degree in Bio-chemistry from Tennessee State University (Nashville, TN) and Doctorate of Medicine degree in 1974 from Medical College of Richmond Virginia. She entered the Air Force in 1973 while attending medical school, and began active duty in 1978 after completion of her residency in Internal Medicine at Meharry Medical

College (Nashville, TN). She started her military career as a Second Lieutenant in 1973 and retired as a Briga-dier General. No stranger to awards, she served as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Command Surgeon for US Transportation Command and Headquarters Air Mobility Command (AMC) based at the Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. She has been awarded over 15 service medals and ribbons, and selected for inclusion as one of America’s Top Oncologist. Her research in breast, colorectal, and pancreatic can-cers and other GI malignancies keeps her abreast of the latest techniques, which includes new drug and che-motherapy evaluation, development of new therapeu-tic regimens, chemo radiation strategies for combined

modality ther-apy, patient selection cri-teria, and sup-portive care for patients with gastrointesti-nal malignan-cies. She has authored and c o - a u t h o r e d more than 100 articles, book chapters, and abstracts re-garding cancer treatment, pre-vention, and cancer control. It is no wonder, she received p r e s t i g i o u s awards such as the “Tree of Life”

award which recognizes health professionals who are committed to community health initiatives, and in Sep-tember (2013), she was inducted as an honoree in the National Historically Black College Hall of Fame. As an organization that is committed to promoting community leaders all across the United States, we are honored that Dr. Mitchell allowed us to share her story with you. Her story should be an inspiration to us all. It proves that if we can accept our gift and calling in life and choose to perfect to the level that she has, our communities, our nation, and our world will be a better place.

For the past 4 years Bridges 2 Africa, Inc. a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2009,has been passionately creating opportunities and events to help people discover, con-nect, explore and celebrate Africa and her heritage. On Sunday, December 15, 2013, Bridges 2 Africa hosted a free memorial event in Nashville, TN celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Doors opened at 3:45 for attendees to have the opportunity to write their condolences and memories of Mandela on a poster similar to the one that was posted outside of his house in Soweto, Johannesburg. The poster will be publicly displayed for years to come as a symbol of Mandela continually living in our hearts. Hundreds of people came to the Global Mall Event Center in Antioch for “Celebrat-ing His Legacy,” an evening filled with danc-ing, singing, poetry, heartfelt tributes, food and art representing a wide international spectrum of the world. It’s no wonder time seems to fly by when we as grown adults waste so much time procrastinat-ing over the impor-tant stuff. Let’s make this the year that we streamline and get the little things in or-der. Here’s where to start:

Hire an Attorney on Retainer If you need legal assistance or are in a lawsuit, hire the best

attorney you can and find one that actually gets results. You may not need one today, but in the future, you may. It is better to have that relationship in place than during a cri-sis moment. If you are a business owner, feel confident in knowing that your contracts are valid. Find someone who solves problems, not just participate in litigation. Time is precious and expensive.

Make a Will Make a will while you are able and healthy right now. Just think of how much trouble your loved ones will have getting your stuff in order when you have become unable to communicate or even worst, an unforeseen death. Give your loved ones the gift of having that stuff put together and organized. Having a finalized Will, not only provides peace of mind for you of your last wishes, but it also may spark interest for others to create a will and finalize any other legal paperwork.

Conduct a Financial Analysis on your Current Debt Get your debts, bills, and outstanding commitments or-ganized. Take the time to draft a list and include all pos-sible creditors you may have. Focus on taking care of the little annoying debts that have been bothering you and you should feel a relief. If you wait too long, debt problems can wreak havoc in other areas of your life.

Ensure Computer/Cell Phone/Electronics have Backup Systems Get your BACKUPS in order. Nothing is worse than a sys-tem failure. Backup all data on your computer hardware

MAKE 2014 THE YEAR YOU GET YOUR LAW IN ORDERMaria House

and cell phone devices. While it may seem that simple things like your cell phone and laptop charger are bother-some, when you run out of power, or have a system failure, you cannot function. There are several products/services to make this process hassle free for you. Get busy now!

Insurance Policy Review Do you know what is covered in your homeowners, car, and life insurance policies? The BIGGER question is do you have these policies? In many states, it is law to insure your vehicle meets state minimum requirements. You may al-ready have these policies in place but have you checked on them recently? Maybe you moved and forgot to up-date your address or other certain policy terms that could greatly affect your life. Why not check on them now be-fore there is a problem. In many instances, if you are using your policy benefits, it is because of something unforeseen or catastrophic. During this time, you are dealing with enough; do not be caught off guard. If you make the time now, it will save you the hassle later. If you notice anything that need to be addressed, contact your local agent. Downsize. Consolidate. Eliminate. Streamline the junk in your life. Sometimes taking care of stuff is more of a headache than it is worth. Are you paying for an insane-number of channels and then feel obligated to take pay a high fee? Are you living in or renting a place that is much larger than you need and then stressed by the responsibilities that come with it? Make this the year that you streamline your property and ease that stress. Enjoy the free outdoors more. Meet your neighbors. Focus on what matters in LIFE.

Make the Commitment to Start Today The New Year is also the time to take note of the goals you have for yourself. To start, try to find that one thing you can do right now that will bring you a lifetime of joy and impact your life in a BIG WAY. Is it reading the morn-ing paper for 20 minutes each day? Is it exercising to lose weight or have better health? Is it going back to school to get that degree that you always wanted? It could be as simple as stretching, flossing, or checking on a loved one once a day. Everyone has something that they aspire to do but continue to put off for tomorrow. What is yours?

Community, in the sense of the word, we may vision, our im-mediate neigh-borhood, but in essences our community can comprise of any area we are ex-periencing at any given mo-ment. I would like to share a story with you, one that has the potential to be heart breaking

or one of celebrating life renewed. August 2nd, 2013, my father had a five way by-pass surgery. We spent 2.5 weeks in the CCICU wait-ing room. We would visit him at every available time slot. However this is not the story, but only the pre-lude to the greater story that unfolded before my eyes. When a loved one is in the hospital, we generally only see what is occurring with our immediate fam-ily. When you spend a great deal of time in a wait-ing room such as the CCIUC you become aware of a greater need. A need that allows you to remain conscious of your families need, but also allows you to focus on something much greater. That greater something, that grey matter in which you do not understand, becomes the community in which you are now living within. A community, that needs your support, one that can only survive if you participate. That community allows you to become a survivor, a participator, a savior, and a friend. Each of you be-come the hope that the others dream of, the desire to one day take your loved one home. Yet this dream has its own way of playing out before our eyes. Dur-ing that stay, we witnessed many families to not

A COMMUNITY AMONGST A COMMUNITYbecome able to take their loved ones home, but to send them to a higher place. This is a place, which no one can suffer any longer. You forget about your woes and offer whatever you have at the time as a condolence, yet you know deep within your heart, that it would never be enough to provide comfort, but it does at the time. There are also those which become uncertain, because they survive such miracles that no man should ever survive. We witnessed an encounter such as that. Think about the one adventure that you dreamed of attempting and what might occur if you receive that opportunity. This is what brought this man to our community. He wanted to experience what it felt like to sky dive! Now, you would hope that each sky diving company would be reputable and safe. This is not how things turned out for this young man. When you sky dive for the first time, you are strapped to an instructor, because they know what they are doing. The question is this; what happens when things go wrong? David Meeks, can finish this story, because he has lived to tell it. The parachute did not open and they fell fifteen thousand feet to the solid ground and then six inches below. Not thinking of himself he attempted to revive the instructor. Broken back, broken arms, busted jaw, and a punctured lung, this man should not have survived that fall or been thinking of his instructor, but he did. The community in that CCI-CU waiting room rallied around his friend and his parents. They offered their homes, their money, but most importantly their prayers. They gave strength, hope, and encouragement that they barely expect-ed for their own family members. Most of all every-one prayed. They prayed for a miracle, because that is what communities are made of and that is what communities need in a time of despair! God Bless this community and God Bless this Mir-acle!Article written by: Monica Dunnagan, Xcellence, Inc. National Outreach Director

KIDDIE CORNER WITH

Aniya Oh, hello you guys, my friends and family. Welcome back! This edi-tion is so my favorite, so far at least. You probably can already tell I am super-excited because it is the hero edition. Yea, buddy! I have so many heroes. Now, just for a few seconds let’s thank God for you and I to be able to have those that provide and protect us. I’m going to be a little personal for one moment, I want to name some of my heroes. My Savior and Great Lord up above, my parents, grandparents, and my lovely family. Our heroes make this world a safer place. Who’s your hero? I won’t hold you any longer so you can get back to your do-dads, but yeah, please don’t forget to write me and name your hero and tell me why. I may share your story. Email: [email protected]. I would also like to have your name and age when you send it. Hope you had a wonderful holiday sea-son and an awesome 2014. Bye-bye!

opportunity. It would provide a platform for him to give back industry knowl-edge that he had achieved, while helping others achieve their goals. “The students that I work with everyday at King University, I con-sider my family. When they walk across that stage and receive their degree, I am re-

warded as well,” he stated. Dr. Blevins legacy of love and support for his students will survive for many years to come. “The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. We must provide them with the tools needed to be successful. I am vested in their future as a father, professor, and citizen” he shared. As the New Year has begun, he now has a per-sonal goal in 2014 of hitting the health club and dropping a few pounds. In his spare time, he en-joys golf and playing basketball with his grand-children. One of his favorite quotes is by Mother Teresa and states, “The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” Dr Blevins said, “I support Xcellence, Inc. because of the organization’s Christian beliefs and its con-tinued commitment to excellence. We promote Dr. Blevins because of his exemplary leadership in education as well as societal commitment to make this world a better place by touching the leaders of tomorrow lives. Article written by: Angella Banks

Dr. Blevins is currently employed with King Uni-versity, which is located in Bristol, TN. He is em-ployed as a Business Professor and serves as the Dean of School of Business and Economics. It was Fall of 2011 when I met Dr. Blevins. Although it was for a very short time period, his educational and business knowledge made a big impact in my life today. He continues to make himself available to me through his mentorship and guidance in my career and professional goals. When asked about his family he shared an in-spired quote by Walt Disney, “The flower that blooms in adversity is the rarest and most beau-tiful of all.” He said, “Simply put, my family is my Life!” His everyday responsibilities are heavy but he moves about his day as to make it seem effort-less. A cheerful soul he is, and he blesses everyone he meets with a very unique laughter that is sure to be remembered by all that crosses his path. Although teaching was not his first career deci-sion, however, after many years of business lead-ership, he decided that he wanted his works to be more impactful. Education was one of the best ways he could imagine, that would afford him this

Your skin is your largest organ and grows the fastest and must be taken care of. It has been de-signed to do many things so it can be of good use to you. Just think if you were without your skin, YOU would probably evaporate. Your skin is what I call the GREAT PROTECTOR!!! You have millions of skin cells in every inch of your body (approx. 19 million). The skin’s growth process is really fast and rids itself of approximately 35,000 old cells each day. Many of us don’t understand what we are made of. Your skin shields YOU from extreme heat, and sunlight that could be harmful or cause damage.

Your skin can also serve as a waterproof shield and will keep germs out as long as you don’t have any cuts. Both your inner and outer layers have to be taken care of because your inner lay-ers are producing sweat glands, which add in removing impurities. Therefore, not taking care of your skin can accelerate wrinkles and can even cause uneven skin tones, and age spots. Beauty begins on the inside with you making a decision that you want more. Don’t wait until you begin to see a wrinkle or a pimple appears to begin taking care of skin. Decide you will do better, slow it down and TAKE CARE of your skin!! YOU ARE VALUALBE!!

R & B Singer Fantasia, and Joe serenades Nashville, Clarksville, and Hopkins-ville Tennessee residents as they come together in uni-ty to support Fort Campbell Soldiers, and their families. This past Summer at the Viceroy Performing Arts Center in Oak Grove, KY, local Clarksville recording company, CBW Records & Official Guilty Confessions hosted the concert, along with sponsoring business, Advance Financial. The community came out to support this event in a mas-sive way that by the time the night was over, thou-sands had came out to rally for their heroes that sacri-ficed so much for our coun-try. Several veterans were honored throughout the night, including a special presentation honoring The 555 (Triple Nickel) Airborne Association. Special Thanks to Ms. Tara Garrett for be-ing a lead organizer of this event and Curtis & Mary Scott, owners of Snapshotz Portrait Studio for provid-ing courtesy photos.

U.S. VETERANS WHO SERVE IN XCELLENCEAMERICAN HEROS

Honoring Veterans of war is a great privi-lege and one that cannot be focused upon enough! To say thank you and that I honor you does not seem to be enough justice for the sacrifices that soldiers provide our coun-try with on a daily basis. Our country has fought many great wars for our freedom! Yet it is the brave soldiers that volunteer to serve our country that make each war possi-ble to conquer. However, when our soldiers return home they are often left displaced, disabled, and even suffer from (PTSD) Post

Traumatic Stress Disorder and left to the confusion and over worked VA Hospitals, or even worse left to the streets of our cities! Then there are those soldiers who are lucky enough to return home and choose to con-tinue to give back to their county, but most importantly to their fellow service men and women. Xcellence Thanks our U.S. Veter-ans and Troops all over the world for their love, dedication, and support for the better-ment of our country

SGT. DEREK PEEPLES, SR.XCEPTIONAL COMMUNITY LEADER & VETERAN

Awards and recognition is most certainly due for this veteran, soldier, community leader, husband, and father. Sgt. Derek Peeples, Sr. is a native of Brownsville TN and currently resides in Memphis Tennessee. In 2004, shortly after returning from a dangerous deployment in Kuwait, he was honored with the Bronze Star Medal with “Valor” for his acts of heroism during the attack against him and fellow troops. Married for over 20 years, he still adores his beautiful wife, Sheronda, and is the proud father of three kids, 2 sons and 1 daughter. His eldest son, Derek Peeples Jr. spent two years at-tending the University of Memphis and decided he wanted to follow his dad’s footsteps, by becoming a military man. He is currently enlisted in the United States Navy, aboard a destroyer in the Middle East. Although, Derek Sr., served previously in the U.S. Marines and then continued his military in the U.S. National Guard, this family is no stranger to loyalty and commitment. This Dad and American Hero is as committed to his family as he is to serving our country and keeping it safe. “In the military, dependability is crucial for survival on the battlefield. Now as a veteran, I take that same mindset with me to work every day as an Immigrations Officer Assistant at the Dept. of Homeland Security. I strive to be that one dependable guy that everyone can count on,” stated Mr. Peeples. When asked, “Why do he feel that many frown against mili-tary careers?” He replied, “I think people that frown upon the military’s mission are inherently short-sighted by the freedom afforded by the soldiers that serve, and the sacrifices made. Being one who has served in 3rd World Countries and seeing real poverty, makes one appreciate what we have been blessed with in the U.S.” He believes that one of those blessings that is taken for grant-ed, is the importance of education. “Education is the new cur-rency,” he stated as he quoted Joe Madison. My goal is to leave a legacy to my loved ones and those I have served, that I am a caring, sincere, real person. I strive to always be an inspiration in someone’s life. I am appreciative to Xcellence, Inc. for sharing my story and

support the organization’s mission to develop leadership and connect with other community leaders, such as myself with a mindset of excellence,” shared Derek Peeples, Sr. Sol-dier, we salute you for all your years of dedication, service, and sacrifices you have made for our freedom. Elder Byron Williams was born to Pastor Ben-nie and Ruby Williams, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The eldest of three chil-dren, he learned at an early age how to love and protect his young-er siblings. As a child, he grew up in holiness, as a member of The Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.), which he credits for his strong spiritual foundation, his love of Jesus Christ, and for ministry. Upon grad-uation and a few years of college, Mr. Wiliams

made the decision to join the United States Air Force, Feb-ruary, 1987. Today, Elder Williams resides in College Park, MD as the Senior Pastor of New Beginning Ministries and works for Medstar Washington Hospital Center as a Family Advocate. Like many other veterans, Byron returned back to college to further his education, once his military career was complete. He is currently enrolled at Capella University pursuing his doctoral degree in Business Administration. He also holds a Master’s Organizational Leadership Degree, Nyack College, BA Pastoral Studies, Southwestern College, AS Community College of the Air Force. Pastor Williams shared, “The birth of the ministry was devel-oped out of my work as a Chaplain with Medstar Washing-ton Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC which began in the fall of 2009. For four years I served as the Chaplain, conducting worship services on forth Sundays for patients, family members and staff who missed the opportunity to attend church while being in the hospital. The ministry af-forded everyone a chance to feel the love of God even while sitting in a place they didn’t volunteer to be in. I learned serving God’s people from the heart, will strengthen you in your daily walk with God even while you may be going through the roughest time in your personal life.” “I am elated at the opportunity to achieve the pentacle in education, my doctorate degree, which I call this season of my life, a God moment, Williams stated.” In September of 2009 when he retired from the Air Force, he had completed an Associate’s degree from the Community College of the Air Force. He soon realized that his desire to return to school was a silent voice within that he had never truly embraced.

ELDER BYRON J. WILLIAMSXCEPTIONAL COMMUNITY LEADER & VETERAN

“The birthing of my educational drive was being developed through me by God. In my mind, I would have been satis-fied with a BA degree, but the doors continued to open with ease, and I accepted the challenge to reach for greater. Upon my graduation, I will be a first-time generational doc-toral graduate within my family, stated Byron.” He believes that this gifting goes beyond his personal family, but is also a dedication for other veterans to believe that once their mili-tary careers are complete, they can achieve anything they desire. In addition, this degree is a spiritual assignment to inspire anyone, especially young black males, that with God on their side, nothing is impossible and no one can stop the plan God has for their life. Mr. Williams talked about how his military career discipline aided in his ability to set goals and stick to the plan in reach-ing them. “As a military member, you learn how important it is to stay the course for success. Meeting timelines, dead-lines, following the course of action all are key in developing discipline mindset which I apply everyday as a Pastor, father, and in my relationship with God. Discipline teaches you, you may not always get your way, but discipline keeps you on track until the plan is worked out in your life, he shared.” When asked about why many people view the military neg-atively as a career choice, Mr. Williams stated, “Many people that have negative impressions of the military have been ex-posed to misconceptions and ideas about the military. In my 17 years as a recruiter, I have heard all the reasons not to join the military, from I don’t want someone to tell me what to do, to I don’t want to wear a uniform. No matter where you work, you will have a supervisor, manager, or director telling you want to do when you come to work. Most employers have a dress code in which you must adhere to in order to be employed with the company. In short, until we die, some-one is going to be telling you what to do.” “The military is a great option for anyone with a desire to go to college. Instead of active duty, one can join the National Guard or the Reserves, which will allow them to serve their country while attending college. In most cases, college is paid for by the military. After graduation from college, an in-dividual can establish two careers parallel to each other and achieve success in the military and in corporate America, stated Williams.” In his final words, he wanted to share with others, “Develop a relationship with God and follow the plan he has designed for their life. Focus on goals and stick to them no matter what obstacles they face. Short-cuts, don’t work very well, but hard work will allow you to succeed every time.” Lastly, he quoted Denzel Washington, “Do what you have to so you can do what you what to do.” Xcellence, Inc. is proud of your accomplishments Elder Wil-liams and we commend you in your continuous educational journey and spiritual endeavors as the Leader and Pastor of New Beginning Ministries in the Maryland area. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and healthy hair is in the hands of a competent hair stylist. Hello, my name is Sheila Nixon and I am a Professional Hairstylist and Makeup Artist. I like to call myself a seasoned veteran in this industry. I am 46 years old and have been doing hair since the young age of 19. Retiring seems like so much fun, but the real fun begins when I open my doors and my first client sits in my chair, en-trusting me to make her Fiercely Fabulous. At times, I think I should retire, but the love of my gift, will not allow these hands to rest. Just as clothes come and go, so do hair trends and styles. I have been around to see a little bit of it all. In my first article, I want to share the foundations of be-ing a great stylist. According to DiplomaGuide.Com, (2014), the cosmetologist industry is expected to have a 14% growth spurt from 2010-2020 (faster than average job growth). It is important for stylist to realize their roles within the shop and the level of professionalism that is expected from shop owners and clients.

HAIR STYLIST 101 Today, everyone calls themselves a hairstylist, rather licensed or not. In our economy, it is even more important for stylist to respect their clientele’s hard-earned dollar, as they most cer-tainly have the option to seek unlicensed home-based stylist, which has not been properly trained to produce growth and healthy hair. Here’s a few tips to get you viewed as a Premier Stylist in your client’s eye.

Tip #1Be Confident.Allow yourself to be open to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace your creative inner voice.

Tip #2Be Professional.Professionalism is so important! Many salons have steered away from it, but you always want to make a good first impres-sion. How do you make a good first impression? Represent your brand by showcasing you. Keep your hair styled in some of the latest styles and trends. Dress appropriately. Inappro-priate dress attire is scrubs and crocs. There’s plenty of ways for you to be comfortable, cute, and sassy. Give your client’s that assurance to rock new styles, makeup, and clothes. After all, this is the profession that you chose, be proud of your deci-sion to inspire others.

Tip #3Don’t Be Tardy.Respect your client’s time by showing up to work on time. In addition, manage your scheduling of additional clients, so that you can get your clients in and out of the shop within a reason-able timeframe. After all, as much as they enjoy your weekly, bi-weekly famous shop conversations, they have a life outside of shop.

#4Set the Atmosphere. You are responsible for making your client’s environment com-fortable. Keep the atmosphere pleasant for everyone as much as possible. Play music that is neutral such as gospel, jazz, or r & b melodies. Try not to discuss topics or use inappropriate

Page 27: Xcellence Community Magazine Winter 2014

words that will offend others. The vibe of the shop will often shift as the day become busy, but will often slow down again toward the later evening. Watch your clients, find out what makes their shop experience a memorable one.

#5Educate your client.Never underestimate you’re the expert in your field. Often times, clients are not aware of what is best for them or what works for them. Not every product is for every client, nor is every style for every client. Specialize in salon selective products. Why should they come to you, if they can purchase the same products as you?

Although this article addressed specifically hair stylist, many of these tips can be shared across the industry with bar-bers as well. Know that your client is your client because they like your service. My final words are to always make a great impression, and to always be a blessing to those you are privileged to serve.
