The question that often arises is “What

makes XIMB different from the host of other

B-Schools?” Everyone talks of a conducive

environment, pedagogical approach and

infrastructure.

But what separates XIMB is the maturity

that it has reached with respect to the

utilization of resources, infrastructure &

intellectual capability; be it in learning,

practice, research or training.

The complete utilization of this system lies

in the fact that it is embedded in the XIMB

culture.

A major feather in the Institute's cap is the

AIS (Academic Information System), which has

been designed to enable On-Line Quizzes,

On-Line Assignments and On-Line Business

Games. It keeps faculty and students in

continuous contact.

Recent developments at XIMB include the

opening of the office of the National HRD

Network (Utkal Chapter) and inauguration of our

purpose built 600-seater auditorium, a first for

the State of Orissa.

The current PGP-II (2002-04) and PGP-I

(2003-05) batch have an excellent mix of

experienced and fresh students.

It is my privilege and pleasure to invite you

to the campus in Jan-2004 for the final

placement of our graduating students. I am

confident that our students will not only meet

your stringent recruitment standards but also

contribute immeasurably to your corporate

excellence once they join your organisation.

XX eXcellence and beyond

The academic approach is a holistic one,

integrating procedural, theoretical and applied

aspects of management. Through summer placements

and live projects it ensures that students receive

ample opportunity to apply the classroom learning in

a practical environment. During the first year

students follow a broad based programme that

provides the fullest appreciation of all aspects of

management. In the second year students have

complete freedom to choose from a wide range of

electives. This ensures that they acquire the skills

they want to fulfil their potential in the corporate

environment. A spirit of healthy competition is

engendered and students are inspired to pursue

excellence in all that they do, armed with a clear

understanding of the social and ethical

responsibilities of management.

The academic programmes are led by the

dedicated and committed 27 core faculty. They are

assisted by visiting faculty who are selected from the

best of academia and industry. They represent the

cream of academic excellence from India and

overseas universities. They share a common goal to

ensure that the students of XIMB are equipped to

make an indelible mark in the world of management.

The Institute has placed particular emphasis on

its IT infrastructure to ensure that all students have

continuous access to the most advanced technology

and information available. Every student hostel room

has a PC with twenty-four hour access to an optical

fibre network ensuring uninterrupted connectivity to

the Internet and other network resources.

Xavier Institute of Management (XIMB) is a dynamic

and innovative business school, continually demanding the

highest levels of excellence from itself, its faculty and

perhaps most importantly, from its students. There is no

question that this Institute has come a very long way in its

16-year history. It chose to benchmark its standards against

the very best business schools in India, Asia and the world

when it was first established in 1987. These same

uncompromising standards hold just as true today as the

Institute continues to innovate to ensure the very highest

standards of education for its students.

The State Government of Orissa chose Bhubaneswar as

the home for XIMB because of its strong intellectual

tradition, superb ambience for study and learning and

excellent interconnectivity with the rest of the country.

The Institute's buildings nestle in 20 acres of lush greenery

creating a perfect environment for learning. The Institute

has a continuing and ongoing commitment to enhance the

infrastructure to ensure full support is given to the

achievement of academic excellence.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Management

(equivalent to an MBA) is the Institute's major programme

(Two years full time or three years part time). It takes

young men and women who have already proven

themselves amongst the elite in India academically and

hones their abilities to become groundbreaking leaders in

the corporate world.

In addition, the Institute offers a Post Graduate

Diploma in Rural Management and a Fellow Programme in

Management for those wishing to carry out cutting edge

research at Doctoral level.

02

Page 4: Ximb BROCHURE

03

XX the empowered eXplorers

Rarely has India had a greater need for talented

young people to create value in the sphere of business.

However, the need of the hour is more than just talent,

but multi-skilled, multi-functional individuals who exude

confidence, flexibility, adaptability, resilience and

tenacity.

During their time at Xavier Institute of Management

we give students every encouragement to fully explore

their potential. They are empowered to create in

themselves the value that they will carry with them when

they join any company or organisation. The Institute's

policy is to provide a large range of electives in the

second year and make them all available to all students.

This gives students the flexibility to equip themselves

with the skills and tools they require to become

exceptional leaders and managers.

The graduating students of Xavier Institute of

Management (XIM) have undergone a two-year programme

that is rigorous, demanding and continually challenging.

This ensures that they are ready, competent and eager to

explore today's complex world of management and add

significant value to an employer because of a shorter

learning curve.

XIMers are groomed for two rigorous years to learn to

be self-starters. They are versatile enough to combine

individual brilliance with team effort to deliver a final

solution to the corporate houses that match their needs.

And most importantly, they are trained to do this under

pressures experienced in real life situations.

AlumniThere are 1903 alumni from XIMB who are already

making their presence felt in dramatic ways across

the corporate landscape. Feedback indicates that

they frequently show tendencies to “get up to speed”

very fast once they join an organization and

demonstrate high levels of self-motivation, tenacity

and innovation. The high “added-value” they bring to

their roles has been reflected in the exceptional

achievements to date by these flag bearers and

ambassadors for XIMB.

“Thanks to the years I spent at XIMB, I grew up, professionally

and personally. It provided me the much needed theoretical

support to sharpen my application capabilities. I am glad to

have been taught by some of the best gurus in the world.

Their guidance extends to me beyond the time I spent at the

Institute. I became better at managing time. I learnt to be

humble and my respect for people has gone up.”

going that eXtra mile

A funneling effect: The courses offered in 2nd year

are mostly cross-functional in nature. Thus, a student

specializing in marketing has a view of human resources

in international marketing. Conversely, a core HR

student learns about marketing practices of different

countries when he devises entry strategies into foreign

markets in international HRM. The same applies to

specializations in finance or systems where the

organization is viewed as an integrated system of

its various business functions and not as a loose

boundary encompassing independently existing parts

and sub-parts.

Meta competence: Perhaps the greatest take

away from the pedagogy at XIMB is the churning of

cognition. We learn how to learn and unlearn. Thus, we

develop the ability to be effective in any situation. In

short, the pedagogy moulds us to be become life-long

learners.

Integrity: This is something that cannot be taught.

Today, there is a rising murmur of corporate governance

being a source of competitive advantage and not a value

system that should be an inherent part of every

business. However, when we observe the faculty, the

charity work they do and their devotion to

developmental work, we realize the importance of

ideals and values. The pedagogy instills among the

students a sense of respect and duty without apparently

teaching these values. But looking back at what we

were when we joined and what we are today, we

comprehend the subtle change that has altered us

fundamentally. The students enter XIMB with the

objective of learning business skills. We leave the place

as complete human beings.

Technology Orientation: In all lectures,

presentations and projects, the faculty and students

are encouraged to use and leverage technology to the

maximum possible extent. This, apart from facilitating

learning, prepares us for the IT leveraged corporate

world.

XXThe world of business is in a state of flux and this makes it

incumbent on a world-class business school to place a high

emphasis on continual upgrading of the curriculum. Our aim is

to ensure that we maintain the correct balance between

theoretical and practical knowledge and that all courses are

kept up to date. Upgradation is a continuous process.

We believe that our students benefit from a curriculum

that is designed with the needs of employers in mind.

As a result our students combine sound theoretical knowledge

with experience of implementation in real life situations.

PedagogyWe have an entire gamut of professional pedagogy in all

aspects of management - operations, marketing, strategy,

human resources, systems, finance etc. However, there is a

set of factors that lends the pedagogy of this institute its

excellence.

Theory: The institute places a stress on strong

theoretical fundamentals instead of solely relying on

application orientation through cases. This ensures that the

students analyze real life situations through the framework

of contemporary theory.

International touch: There is a strong blend of Indian as

well as truly global cases that are discussed. With the winds of

globalization catching on, no more can B-Schools deal

exclusively in Indian cases. Here at XIMB, we are exposed to a

worldview, enabling us to make the transition from being an

Indian manager to a transnational manager seamlessly.

08

Page 7: Ximb BROCHURE

FacultyAt XIMB, we have worked hard to attract

and retain faculty of the highest caliber. Not only are they highly talented and accomplished individuals, but they also share a common passion for development and learning of students. Their aim is nothing short of bringing out the true potential in students to ensure that they become the very best that they can be.

The XIMB faculty has always been involved in cutting-edge consultancy work, both, for the corporate area and the society and reflects the commitment to social responsibility that XIMB has. Path-breaking consultancy work in the power sector reforms in recent time, consultancy for micro-finance, consultancy for disaster mitigation, socio-economic empowerment of tribal people are just a few to name. The clients vary from the World Bank to the corporate houses to several state governments in India.

The students at XIMB directly benefit from this wide gamut of consulting experience of its faculty. The classroom discussions get enriched through the insights that the faculty bring from their consultancy experiences. The vast body of contextual knowledge thus gets embedded into a theoretical framework.

It is not only the faculty; the students at XIMB are engaged in consulting as well. XIMB students over the years have successfully carried out several consulting assignments for local organizations.

Functional Areas

Our academic courses are delivered through nine

functional areas; Marketing, Accounting & Finance,

Information Systems, Human Resources Management,

Decision Sciences and Operations Management,

Organisational Behaviour, General Management,

Economics and Rural Management.

Year 1

In the first year students are given a broad

appreciation of business functions through a range of

subjects. During this phase they begin to identify those

areas wherein their aptitude lie.

Year 2

In the second year the students select from among

an array of electives according to their inclinations and

competence. Unlike many other B-schools we place no

restrictions on which electives may be chosen. This

allows sufficient leeway to students to pursue their

fields of interest without restriction and achieve

a cross-functional command.

XIMAHR - XIM Association for Human ResourcesThis is a platform for learning and sharing of ideas on

HR. It is advised by three members of the faculty.

Workshops and seminars enable members to enhance their

classroom learning with in-depth exploration of the key

issues in HR today.

Live HR related projects, such as a recent one carried

out for NIIT, give first hand experience of formulation and

implementation of HR strategies in business.

The association has close ties with the National HRD

Network, which has opened its Utkal Chapter offices

within the premises of XIMB. Both XIMAHR and NHRDN

Utkal Chapter organize and hold talks in and around

Bhubaneshwar on issues of emerging interest in Human

Resource Management.

XFin - The Finance Association of XIMXFin is instrumental in promoting activities related to

finance on the campus. The activities spill over from the

arena of academics into trading in the stock market. An

innovative, fully student-managed Mutual Fund, the first

of its kind in any Indian B-school has been floated under the

auspices of XFin. It offers students the opportunity to

understand the mechanism of the Stock Exchange.

One of the major events carried out by X-fin is the

analysis of the Union Budget presented by the Finance

Minister of India. Last year, the event was organized in

association with the Bhubaneswar chapter of ICWAI.

Speakers from the National Stock Exchange and ICICI

Bank joined student speakers from XIMB and more than

700 people attended the event.

Come Xpressions, the annual fest of XIMB, X-Fin

conducts several finance games including a Stock Market

simulation called Dalal Street. The workings of

International finance are exhibited through 'Dollars and

Yens'. There are also Panel Discussions and Paper

Presentations with notable speakers from the world of

finance.

XFin organizes seminars, talks and lectures.

It brings out an annual publication titled Invest Aid and

an Xpressions special issue called Invex.

A remarkable initiative of XFin is the Knowledge

Centre. Primarily set up to help students from non-

finance backgrounds to understand finance, it is

regularly updated with new definitions and insights into

the theories of finance and economics. It also holds

support sessions for the PGP I students to help them

overcome difficulties and introduce them to new fields

of knowledge. The Facts and Figures column of their web

page is regularly updated with data from the economy

and the markets so as to provide an up-to-date ready-

reckoner for students.

UlyssesUlysses is a business strategy game conceived and

developed by students of XIMB.

It is an online Simulation game, a game that revolves around formation of strategies. It involves different aspects of management from Finance, Marketing and Operations.

From Capital Structure and Financing to Investment, Capacity Utilization to Inventory Management, Sales and Distribution Management to Brand Management - this game covers every facet of real life decision-making in the corporate world. It tests the ability not only to read the market, with all its complexities but the ability to preempt it-the hallmark of the master strategist.

Each decision one takes will affect not only the fortunes of one’s own firm but also those of the competitors and of the industry as a whole. Each Company is competing to gain the maximum market share. This simulation provides a dynamic environment where change is the only constant. The environment may be simulated but the challenge is real.

Ulysses was played last year during Xpressions, the annual B-School Event of XIMB. 170 teams from different B-Schools participated in this game which was played over a period of one month. On the Corporate side, the game saw participation from Infosys, TCS, L&T, SIDBI, Satyam etc

According to experts; “The game provides an opportunity to view the various business functions holistically and understand the dynamics of cross-functional interactions”

X-Stage: The Dramatics AssociationThis is a new XIMB student association set up to

enable students to express their creative side. In its first year X-Stage has staged five very well received productions with more to come in the future. All of these have been completely developed in-house.

X-Stage has also explored other areas of creative expression such as dance drama, street theatre and drama workshops. Exploration of challenging issues of the day in our country or the role of managers through the eyes of drama provides members with insights and deeper understanding.

XSYS - The Systems Association of XIMXSYS, The Systems Association of XIMB is one of the

most vibrant associations on campus, recognising the

key role of IT as a strategic tool of management. The

high number of students placed in IT and related

industries bear testimony to the strong IT focus at XIMB.

Through XSYS, members get opportunities to

delivering IT projects and consultancy services.

Academic Information System (AIS)AIS is a home spun software system and is one of its

kind among the business schools in the country. It helps to

automate academic administration and knowledge

management within academic institutions. AIS includes

sophisticated tools that streamline processes, enhance

academic development, and provide integrated solution to

academic development. Today's higher education

institutions are under unprecedented pressure; to serve

the needs of students and employees, address demands for

educational reforms, trim budgets in the face of

decreasing funding, and increase grant revenues. AIS

provides benefits to each member of the academic

community in the institution - the academic office, the

students, the faculty and the management.

Project Accounting and Monitoring

Information System (PAMIS) Today, Non Governmental Organization face

unprecedented pressure. And they are also under

increasing financial scrutiny. Tracking financial planning

and monitoring within your organization is no longer a

matter of choice - It's a matter of survival.

NGO's are project organizations. They are involved in

implementing several projects being funded by

Government and Funding agencies. Successful project

implementation requires impeccable planning, progress

monitoring and strong financial discipline.

Examination On-Line (EOL)In any educational institute, apart from teaching,

performance assessment and evaluation is one of the major

challenges. Learning is enhanced through timely and

frequent feedback. Most teachers would find the

Performance Evaluation tedious and monotonous.

EOL is a solution for the performance evaluation woes of

the teachers and students. This web based tool gives

complete control to the teacher to build his question bank,

design quizzes and examinations and administer the quiz

over the Internet and publish results.

Internet Survey (iSurvey)Conducting Surveys is a common requirement in

many disciplines such as Business Management,

Psychology, Sociology, etc. The manual method of

questionnaire design, administration, data collection

and compilation is a very tedious process. iSurvey is a

web based solution to conduct surveys. The process of

designing and administering the survey is greatly

simplified when you use iSurvey. The data collected

can be exported to SPSS or a Spreadsheet for further

analysis.

embodiment of what our Institute stands and strives

for. The alumni committee performs the vital

function of keeping open all lines of communication

between XIMB and its past students, as well as

mind in a healthy body. That's why we, at XIMB keep

sports at the top of our minds. However busy the

study schedules, students ensure they get maximum

benefit from XIMB’s excellent sports facilities.

36

Summer Placements

At the end of the first year, each student spends

two months with an organization as part of his summer

internship. XIMB has a rich repertoire of companies

which recognize the benefits of offering these

opportunities to the students. It includes many of the

most highly regarded companies in India like GE-SBI,

PwC, UTI Bank, ABN Amro Bank, Wipro, Reliance

Infocom, GECIS, ICICI to name a few. The Summer

Internship is an integral part of the XIMB curriculum.

One of the most valuable benefits is for the students to

see first hand how the theories and principles learned

in the classroom translate in to reality in the business

world.

One of the most useful purposes served by the

summer placement is that when XIMers complete their

two years of study they are ready and enthusiastic to

'hit the ground running' for their new employer. These

are young professionals with a thirst for action and a

hunger to make their mark in the corporate world.

Live ProjectsAt XIMB we consider it vital that students have an

awareness that is grounded in the real world of

business and management where theory meets

reality. For this reason we aim to involve our students

in live projects that give them hands-on opportunities

to put their classroom learning in to practice. These

projects also offer wonderful opportunities for

students and faculty to see the fruits of their work

having a direct benefit in the community and in the

corporate arena.

DAZZLE ProjectRising to the number 2 position.

One of the recent success stories is the Dazzle

project undertaken by Maxim. This mineral water

brand was fighting a tough battle against such big

shots like Bisleri, Kinley and Bailey. When the project

came to MAXIM, they devised a complete marketing

strategy for the brand. This included studies on Brand

preferences, Consumer buying behavior, distribution

coverage in Bhubaneswar of Dazzle and Detailed

competitor analysis.

By determining the critical factors leading to sale

of bottled water, MAXIM arrived at concrete

suggestions on marketing issues like how to improve

the reach and coverage of the product across

Bhubaneswar, what should be the correct mix of

schemes for the retailers and what should be the

advertising and promotion strategy. As a result of

these efforts getting implemented, the brand equity

of the product improved remarkably. This was

reflected in the increase in market share of Dazzle,

which rose from being a number three brand in

Bhubaneswar to being number two.

FINAL PLACEMENT

The Campus Recruitment Programme

commences on 9 January 2004. A team consisting of

faculty members and student coordinators manages

the placement activities of the institute.

PLACEMENT WEEK

During the Placement Week, the participating

companies are allotted day and time slots during

which they can commence the recruitment process.

The scheduling is based purely on students'

preference. The Placement Office does not entertain

any requests for alterations of scheduled time-slots.

PRE PLACEMENT TALKS (PPTs)

Over the years PPT's have been a standard

practice to facilitate the company-student

interaction. PPT's give you an opportunity to project a

proper image of your organisation, the opportunities

it provides and the prospects that lie ahead for the

aspirant. You can avail of the facilities LCD projector,

overhead projector (OHP) and TV/VCR. PPT

commences from 01-Aug-2003. You are requested to

contact the Placement Office for dates available for

Pre-Placement Talks.

While the PPT's provide the students an

opportunity to know more about the organisation, it

gives the organisation an equal opportunity to

interact with the students and the faculty.

Many organisations conduct interviews for

Summer Internship at the time of the PPT. Some

Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa, is situated in

the Khurda district. The city has been built in two

parts;on one side is the ancient town with its world

famous temples and on the other, the newly

constructed capital with its offices, courts and private

residences. Bhubaneshwar, geographically serves not

only as a link between northern and southern India, but

it also opens up channels of communication and

commerce with the rest of the world. Visitors are

impressed with the splendour of the three monuments

- the soaring spire of the Lingaraja temple, the white-

domed peace Pagoda of Dhauli on the bank of the river

Daya, and the pink temple of Mahavir Jain on the

Khandagiri hill.

Apart from being a temple city, Bhubaneswar is

amongst the most favored destination for IT companies

and corporates. Some of the big names like Infosys and

Satyam already have their development centres in

Bhubaneswar along with STPI Park.
