step 1: installing the tRansMitteR batteRies

q Push the transmitter antenna down into the moulded hole in the top of the transmitter.

q Thread the antenna (clockwise) into place and tighten it gently until it stops.

iMpoRtant Do not force the antenna into place or tighten it too strongly. Doing so could cause damage to the antenna and/or transmitter.

q Check to make sure that the transmitter power switch is in the OFF position (pulled back).

q Remove the battery cover from the bottom of the transmitter by pushing the tab, then pulling it up.

o Install 8 'AA' Alkaline batteries into the transmitter, double-checking to make sure that the polarity (+/-) is correct.

iMpoRtant Pay close attention to the polarity of the batteries as shown in the photo.

q Reinstall the battery cover by firmly pushing the back of the battery cover down, sliding it back into the U-shaped slot, then pushing the front down to snap it into place.

Upgrading your transmitter to use rechargeable NiCD or NiMH batteries is easy. All you need to do is purchase 8 'AA' rechargeable NiCD or NiMH batteries and a 70mAH charger that is capable of charging up to 8 cells (9.6V). This will allow you to recharge the batteries without removing the batteries from the transmitter and it will save you money in the long run, since you won't need to purchase Alkaline batteries when they run low.

tRansMitteR upgRade tip

waRning Never attempt to charge Alkaline batteries. They are not designed to be charged and will leak or even explode.

Page 6: XTM Rage 4wd Manual - CompetitionX · 2012-06-24 · Page safety waRnings geneRal waRnings l Under no circumstances should you operate your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck

step 2: chaRging the batteRy

q Remove the four clips that hold the body onto the chassis, then remove the body from the chassis.

iMpoRtant Be careful not to lose the four circular foam pads that are installed between the body and the body mounting posts.

qPlug the battery connector on the charger into the battery connector on the battery.

+ As a safety feature, the connectors can only be plugged in one way.

qPlug the battery charger into an AC wall outlet and charge the battery for the length of time determined in the formula above. In most cases this will be between 2 and 2-1/2 hours.

Depending on the region that you purchased your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck from will determine the type of charger that is included. The type of charger will determine the amount of time you should charge the battery. Please look carefully at the charger in your set. It will list the charger output in mA hours. For example: OUTPUT 7.2V - 500mA. To determine how long to charge the battery, divide the mA Output by the total mAh of the battery (1100mAh). In this case 1100mAh / 500mA = 2.2 hours. So, you would charge the battery for between 2 and 2-1/2 hours to achieve a full charge.

l Always remove the battery from the chassis for the charging process.

l Always allow the battery to cool before recharging it.

l If the battery gets hot during the charging process, unplug it from the charger immediately.

l Always fully discharge the battery before recharging it to ensure that it doesn't overcharge.

l Never leave the battery unattended during the charging process.

deteRMining chaRge tiMe and batteRy chaRging tips

iMpoRtant The battery comes from the factory partially charged. For the first charge, only charge the battery for approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours. This will ensure that you don't over-charge the battery.

You may wish to upgrade the included AC charger in your set with an AC peak-detection fast charger. This type of charger can charge the battery in approximately 30 minutes. We recommend the Pro-Peak Delta Base AC Peak-Detection Charger (P/N 158331 (US) / O-IP1500 (UK) / O-IP1500/EUR (Europe)). Additionally, you will also require an adaptor lead (XTM3876) to allow you to connect the Delta Base charger to the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's included 7.2V 1100mAh NiMH battery pack.

chaRgeR upgRade tip

q Remove the two clips from the battery cover, then pull the battery cover up and off, and set it to the side.

q Pull the battery up and out of the chassis.

iMpoRtant Always remove the battery from the chassis for the charging process.

step 3: installing the antenna suppoRt tube

q Uncoil the receiver antenna.

q Push the end of the antenna up through the antenna mounting hole in the battery cover.

q Slide the receiver antenna wire into one end of the antenna support tube and out the other end.

iMpoRtant If you have difficulty sliding the antenna wire through the antenna support tube in the next procedure, first pull the antenna wire through your fingers several times to straighten it, then lightly wet the antenna wire with glass cleaner. The glass cleaner will make the antenna wire slide through the support tube much easier.

q After the battery has finished charging, reinstall it into the chassis and reinstall the battery cover, using the two clips provided.

iMpoRtant Don't plug the battery into the speed controller yet.

q Push the end of the antenna support tube into the antenna mount.

iMpoRtant Leave the excess receiver antenna wire hanging from the top of the antenna support tube. Under no circumstances should you cut the antenna wire shorter.

step 4: checking the steeRing and thRottle contRols

q Verify that the receiver power switch is in the OFF position.

iMpoRtant ON and OFF labels are moulded into the face of the switch.

Page 8: XTM Rage 4wd Manual - CompetitionX · 2012-06-24 · Page safety waRnings geneRal waRnings l Under no circumstances should you operate your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck

qPlug the battery connector on the ESC into the battery connector on the battery.

+ As a safety feature, the connectors can only be plugged in one way.

qDouble-check that both the transmitter throttle trim dial and the steering trim dial are centred. Note: The raised tab on the trim dial should be positioned so that it lines up close to the similiar raised tab to the left of the dial.

o Slide the transmitter's power switch forward to turn the transmitter 'ON'. All three transmitter LEDs should light up.

iMpoRtant If the LEDs do not light up check the polarity of the batteries. If only the red or amber LED lights up, replace the batteries or recharge them (if using rechargeable NiCD or NiMH batteries).

o Slide the receiver's power switch to the 'ON' position to turn the receiver 'ON'.

iMpoRtant Lift the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck off the ground before turning on the receiver to ensure that if the motor turns on when you turn 'ON' the receiver, the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck won't drive away.

iMpoRtant If you turn on the receiver and the motor turns on, turn the throttle trim dial on the transmitter right or left until the motor stops. This procedure is covered in more detail in the 2CAM's dedicated instruction manual (included).

q Place the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck on the ground.

o Rotate the transmitter's steering wheel forward (to the right). The front wheels should turn right.

iMpoRtant If the wheels don't turn right, flip the steering servo reversing switch on the transmitter to change the direction that the front wheels turn.

iMpoRtant Before driving your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck, always turn 'ON' the transmitter first, followed by the receiver. After you're done driving your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck, turn 'OFF' the receiver first, then turn 'OFF' the transmitter. This will prevent the possibility of radio interference.

Page 9: XTM Rage 4wd Manual - CompetitionX · 2012-06-24 · Page safety waRnings geneRal waRnings l Under no circumstances should you operate your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck

o Rotate the transmitter's steering wheel backward (to the left). The Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's front wheels should turn left.

o Now, let go of the steering wheel. The Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's wheels should return to centre.

iMpoRtant If the wheels do not point straight ahead (centre) after you return the steering wheel to centre, turn the steering trim dial on the transmitter right or left to adjust the wheels so that they point straight ahead.

o While holding the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck off the ground, pull back on the throttle trigger. The wheels should spin counter-clockwise.

o Release the throttle trigger and the wheels should stop spinning.

iMpoRtant If the wheels don't spin counter-clockwise, flip the throttle reversing switch on the transmitter to change the direction that the wheels spin.

To ensure that the radio control system is operating properly and to prevent any chance of a runaway model, the radio control system should be range checked before the first run of the day and/or after a crash. To range check the radio control system, do the following:

o Verify that the transmitter antenna is fully retracted, then turn on the transmitter, then the receiver. With the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck on the ground walk away from it about 10 metres (25 feet). Move the steering wheel while looking at the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's front wheels. The wheels should pivot back and forth as you rotate the steering wheel back and forth. before running your Rage 1/18th 4wd electric off Road truck, make sure to fully extend the transmitter antenna.

iMpoRtant If the radio system does not operate properly, please refer to the troubleshooting guide on page 13 before continuing further. Never attempt to operate your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck if the radio control system is not functioning properly.

step 5: Range checking the Radio contRol systeM

Driving your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck is the fun part! You will find the that it's capable of awesome speed and has great handling ability for such a small size. Here are some quick tips:

l Turning the steering wheel left and right causes the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck to turn left and right.

l To make the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck move forward, pull back on the throttle trigger.

l Letting go of the throttle trigger will cause the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck to coast until it eventually stops.

l Pushing on the throttle trigger will engage the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's braking feature.

l To engage the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's reverse feature, first push the throttle trigger forward to engage the brakes, then release the throttle trigger momentarily and push the throttle trigger forward again to go in reverse.

l The steering and throttle controls are proportional. This means that the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck's steering and throttle controls will react in direct proportion to the amount you turn the steering wheel or move the throttle trigger.

l If the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck veers off to one side or the other on a flat surface without moving the steering wheel, adjust the steering trim dial on the transmitter until it drives in a straight line.

l If the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck moves without moving the throttle trigger, adjust the throttle trim dial on the transmitter until it does not move when you're not moving the throttle trigger.

step 6: dRiVing youR Rage 1/18th 4wd electRic off Road tRuck

chassis tuning guide

iMpoRtant When making changes to the settings of your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck, make the settings the same for each side. For example, if you change the spring tension on the right front shocks, you should change the spring tension on the left front shocks the same amount, etc. Do not make any changes that are more than 3 degrees from the initial settings listed or the handling characteristics of your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck will become very poor.

Chassis alignment and geometry are important if you want your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck to perform well. Just because the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck is small doesn't mean you can't tune the chassis for performance. Its design allows you to make the same basic tuning adjustments that you can in larger 1/10th and 1/8th scale models. Follow our guidelines in this section to get the most out of your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck.

The toe angle is the angle of both front tyres (or rear tyres) to each other, when viewed from above. Toe-in is when the front of both tyres point toward each other and toe-out is when the front of both tyres point away from each other.

l For the front tyres, toe-in will make your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck track (run) straighter, but the steering will be more sensitive. Toe-out will desensitise the steering, making your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck a little more driver-friendly.

l For the rear tyres, if you're running on a smooth surface, we suggest no toe-in. If you're running on a rough surface, we suggest about 1~2 degrees of toe-in. This will give the rear end a little more "bite" (traction).

adJusting toe angle - fRont and ReaR

l 0 degrees toe-in on the front and 2 degrees on the rear for overall best 4WD driveability on most surfaces.

+ Adding more than 3 degrees of toe-in or toe-out on the front will result in excessive loss of speed and erratic handling. Toe adjustments should be measured with the Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck at its normal ride height.

PRO TIP For more precise toe angle adjustments, use a dedicated toe angle adjustment gauge, available at most hobby retailers.

q Adjusting the toe-angle of both the front and the rear is the same. To adjust the toe-angle, turn the tie-rods in or out with an adjustable wrench.

adJusting shock daMping

Changing the shock oil (the oil inside the shocks) will change their damping characteristics. Typically, if you're running on smooth surfaces, use a heavier weight oil. If you are running on rough surfaces, use a lighter weight oil.

l 10wt shock oil is installed as standaRd.

IMPORTANT do not use motor oil. We recommend using only 100% Silicone Shock Oil.

Camber is referred to as the amount of the tyre's surface that contacts the ground. Tyres that are exactly perpendicular to the ground have 0 degrees of camber. If the top of the tyre leans in toward the chassis, the tyre has negative camber. If the top of the tyre leans out away from the chassis, the tyre has positive camber.

adJusting caMbeR angle

l For driving on smooth surfaces set both the front and the rear tyres at 0 degrees.

l For driving on rough surfaces set the front tyres at -1 degree and the rear tyres at -2 degrees.

RecoMMended initial settings

q Adjust the camber angle of the tyres by turning the camber turnbuckles in or out with an adjustable wrench.

Camber settings should be measured with your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck at its normal ride height.

PRO TIP For more precise camber adjustments, use a dedicated camber gauge, available at most hobby retailers.

l Check the chassis for any loose screws, nuts or bolts. Tighten them as necessary.

l Any screws that are threaded directly into metal should be secured into place with threadlock. This will prevent the screws from loosening during use. Screws threaded into nylon or composite material do not require threadlock.

l Check the steering linkage for any signs of wear or misalignment. Tighten and/or readjust it as necessary.

l Once in a while, remove the wheels and hex adapters, and clean the wheel bearings, using a bearing cleaner. This will remove any dust and grit that may, over time, damage the bearings.

l Check the electronics for any signs of damage. This should include the steering servo, receiver, motor, wiring and electronic speed control.

l After a period of time the chassis will accumulate a lot of dirt and debris. This build-up should be cleaned off using a stiff brush and high-pressure air. Soap and water can also be used, but you will need to remove the electronics so that they don't get damaged. They are not waterproof. Because the chassis is assembled from moulded nylon and plastic parts, use of chemical spray cleaners is not recommended. These cleaners may damage the parts.

l After cleaning the chassis you should oil the internal moving parts of the chassis. Apply a very thin coat of grease to the spur gear.

l Periodically remove the motor and clean it thoroughly using a high-pressure motor cleaner spray. After cleaning the motor you should apply a couple of drops of lubricating oil to the motor bushings on each end of the motor.

l Periodically check the condition of the transmitter batteries. If you think they might be low, replace/recharge them as necessary.

l Check the condition of the electrical connectors, including the battery connector and the switch, for any signs of wear or damage.

l Check the body mounts and clips for any signs of damage.

l Periodically check the tyres. If a tyre is coming loose from the wheel, carefully glue it back together using a thin bead of tyre glue.

l Periodically remove the shocks and springs, and clean any dirt and grime from the shock shafts and the lower portion of the shock bodies. This will help prevent dirt from damaging the O-ring seals.

l Check the receiver antenna for any signs of damage.

Maintaining youR Rage 1/18th 4wd electRic off Road tRuck

Following a simple maintenance schedule will ensure that your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck operates in top condition every time you use it, and is strongly recommended.

l Periodically check the gear mesh to make sure it is not out of alignment. If necessary, reset the gear mesh before running your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck again. Don't run your Rage 1/18th 4WD Electric Off Road Truck with the gear mesh out of alignment or the spur gear will strip. Follow the procedures below to set the gear mesh:

q Loosen the two motor mounting screws on the bottom of the chassis enough so that you can slide the motor assembly side to side.

q Slide a 6mm (1/4") wide strip of notebook paper between the pinion gear and the spur gear and push the motor up against the spur gear until the paper crinkles, then retighten the two motor mounting screws. Make sure the pinion gear and the spur gear are in-line.

q Remove the paper and double-check the gear mesh. If the gear mesh is set properly, you should feel a very small amount of play between the two gears. If there is an excessive amount of play or no play at all, readjust the gear mesh again.
