Marcel Agüeros never dreamed of becoming an astronomer.

“I grew up in Manhattan, and there weren’t many dark, starry nights to inspire me,” Agüeros said.

Things changed during the summer of his junior year at Columbia College, which he spent at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, “an hour from my abuela’s house.”

He had first visited Arecibo as a 12-year-old. “But now I was part of the team using its huge radio dish to listen in on what was happening out in the universe,” he said. “It cemented my desire to be an astronomer.”

Now a professor at Columbia University in the Department of Astronomy, Agüeros studies how stars like our sun change over time. He examines how those changes might affect the planets around them. “We’re going to find another Earth soon,” Agüeros said. “My work is part of figuring out how likely that planet is to host life.”

Agüeros also directs his department’s outreach efforts. Columbia astronomers host free public lectures and stargazing events. They visit local public schools. A decade ago, Agüeros created a program to show teachers from around the city how to use telescopes, knowledge they could bring back to their schools. “It’s a great way to excite students about science in general and astronomy in particular,” he said.

In addition, Agüeros founded a program to help underrepresented minorities get into science Ph.D. programs. “There are far too few women and students of color in our fields,” he said. “It’s a problem that I am committed to fixing.” In 2015, Agüeros received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. President Obama praised his groundbreaking research and his desire to ensure that minority students become tomorrow’s leaders in science.

“I didn’t realize it as a kid, but even New York’s bright, cloudy nights are an amazing resource,” Agüeros said. “Watching the moon go through its phases or spotting Venus shining brightly after sunset is magical. It connects us to one of humanity’s oldest activities: contemplating the universe and our place in it.”

Former Yankees closer baseball Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera paid a visit to NewYork-Presbyterian’s (NYP) school-based health center at the George Washington Educational Complex in Washington Heights recently.

Leaders of the school-based clinic welcomed the opportunity on Wed., October 2nd to raise awareness about the array of health services offered at the center.

Rivera, Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez and NYP staff encouraged students to visit the center for annual physicals, reproductive healthcare, first aid, mental healthcare, and vaccinations, and to learn about healthy eating.

“Being able to provide services within the school setting is extremely important because engaging adolescents in their healthcare at an early age sets them up for success for their future health and well-being,” said Davina Prabhu, Vice President of the Ambulatory Care Network (ACN) in the NYP Division of Community and Population Health.

The health center, run by NYP at the George Washington Educational Complex, is one of seven school-based health centers and 10 school-based mental

health clinics the hospital operates, serving approximately 14,000 kids in New York City.

The centers are open year-round, and all the healthcare services are available free of charge to the students.

Amtrak billboard panned

This is a bad sign.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat is accusing Amtrak of going off the rails when it comes to a new advertising billboard that the federally subsidized agency has put up in West Harlem.

Installed in June along Amtrak’s rail line, the large video display at West 155th Street and Riverside Drive has drawn the ire of local residents, who complained that it was constructed without community notice and has become an eyesore.

At a press conference on Mon., Oct. 7, Espaillat said he has introduced legislation that would require the railroad to follow local construction and zoning laws procedures when installing advertising displays.

Currently, Amtrak is exempt under federal law from following such city and state procedures.

Espaillat’s bill — which he is calling the Allowing More Transparency in Reviewing Advertising Construction Act, or the

Amtrak Act — would remove this exemption. Espaillat said the billboard obstructs the

scenic views of the Hudson River, calling it an “assault on the environment.”

“This isn’t necessary for the functioning of the rail network — they want to make money,” remarked Espaillat, who said he has appealed to Amtrak to remove the billboard.

Residents complained that the sign blocks views of the river from local apartments and has become a nuisance due to the glare from its video screen.

“The screen is on all night, and the

light shines into people’s apartments,” said Bruce Robertson, a member of Community Board 12.

“It’s terribly obnoxious,” remarked Elizabeth Currier, who has lived in the neighborhood for 54 years. “This is a prime place for people to look at the view.”

Robertson argued there has been an increase in traffic accidents in the area. “Drivers are looking at the sign when they shouldn’t be,” he said. “This highway is notoriously dangerous.”

According to NYPD crash statistics, there have been 13 motor vehicle accidents on the Henry Hudson Parkway between 150th and 160th Streets since the billboard was completed in June.

Two of the accidents occurred at 155th Street, in close proximity to the billboard.

“Distracted driving is our biggest concern,” added local resident Richard Habersham. “The sign went up, and two days later we had an accident here.”

However, the 13 collisions in the vicinity between June and September represented a decrease compared to the same time period in 2018, where there were 17 accidents, according to NYPD traffic data.

It’s a lock for NOCC.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the launch of New York City Neighborhood Organizing Census Committees (NOCCs), part of the NYC Census 2020’s Field Program. The NOCCs program will seek to recruit 2,500 volunteer “Census Ambassadors” citywide to engage in local census-related outreach, with the ultimate goal of significantly increasing New York City’s self-response rate in the 2020 Census.

“Successful campaigns come from the grassroots. That’s why we’re taking to the streets to ensure all New Yorkers get counted next year,” said de Blasio in a statement. “Everyone in this city has a role to play. We must encourage one another to fill out the census and ensure we get an accurate count.”

NOCC volunteers will primarily engage in four organizing tactics: teach-ins, phone banking, “text-banking,” and community canvassing.

The city will train volunteers via “Census 101” trainings on what the census is, its importance to New York City, and best practices for community organizing. Volunteers in the NOCCs program will also be provided with printed materials, talking points, and digital toolkits, and are expected to conduct census-related organizing activities in their neighborhoods.

Interested New Yorkers can sign up to volunteer and join their local NOCC by visiting NYC Census 2020’s website: nyc.gov/census.

Once a volunteer signs up, he or she will receive an e-mail within three business days informing them of upcoming Census 101 trainings, as well as providing them with information regarding census-related events across the city.

“Our team is leading a multi-pronged, campaign-style strategy in coordination with a broad range of stakeholders to proactively engage New Yorkers from all walks of life. We know that when our communities organize, there’s nothing that can stop us. That’s why we’re empowering everyday New Yorkers to act as trusted voices in their own communities and help organize their neighborhoods for a full 2020 count,” said NYC Census 2020 Director Julie Menin.

Under the NOCCs program, the city will be divided into 245 neighborhoods across all five boroughs. Each NOCC contains a group of census tracts, with neighborhood boundary lines will be drawn along the appropriate census tract boundaries.

New Yorkers will be able to see an average self-response rate for their neighborhood on NYC Census 2020’s website in real time, and compare that rate to the rate of self-response in 2010.

On a recent morning, the church walls echoed with

bird screeches – and even the occasional dog woof.

This was no ordinary prayer service, as the guests of honor were creatures with fur, scales, and wings.

An annual tradition, the blessing of the animals was held on October 4 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic School, located on Arden Street.

Founded in 1932, the school educates students from Pre-K through eighth grade.

The mass is held in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, who is venerated as the patron saint of animals and the environment.

By 9 a.m., the altar was lined with numerous cages and enclosures, and students removed animals one by one for blessings by the parish priest. There was brief excitement caused by a runaway frog on the altar, who was soon recovered and returned to his tank.

While some of the students brought pets from home, most of the creatures

are denizens of the school building, which doubles as a miniature zoo.

In addition to 275 students, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs school is home to dozens of animals, including cockatoos, iguanas, rabbits, parakeets, fish, turtles, snakes, frogs, and guinea pigs.

Rising tides and parched forests are well-documented concerns in conversations about climate change. The mental health implications of climate change are less well-documented, but also profound. Here are five reasons for mental health and climate change advocates to get talking.

1. Rising overall temperatures are linked to worse mental health. A 2018 study examined the connection between meteorological and climate data and mental health status. It found that a 5 degree increase in average temperature

would result in nearly 2 million additional individuals reporting mental health difficulties in just a one-month period. When the heat index surged above 103 degrees in Baltimore during the summer of 2018, emergency calls related to psychiatric conditions increased by 40%.

2. Climate change, natural disasters, and trauma. The

natural disasters is linked to a risk of severe mental health symptoms.

3. Climate-related migration is growing. In 2018, 18.8 million people were internally displaced due to disaster-related events. Registered nurses from three hospitals in the New York-Presbyterian (NYP) system delivered petition signatures and a list of demands to NYP executives on Tues., Oct. 8th in a push for a new contract that includes improved staffing ratios.

Nurses from Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Gracie Square Hospital in Manhattan and Hudson Valley Hospital in Peekskill gathered at NYP’s Columbia University Medical Center in Washington Heights to make their demands known.

Gina Cafaro, a nurse at Brooklyn Methodist, said she and her colleagues have been working without a contract for nearly six months.

“Since New York-Presbyterian took over Methodist Hospital, staffing has gotten worse,” she said. “RN recruitment and hiring [are] down, and morale is very low.”

The hospital became part of the NYP system in 2017.

care and pension benefits, said Anthony Ciampa, a nurse at NYP/Columbia and First Vice President of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).

“The negotiations are not as productive as they need to be. They’re not moving at the frequency we need to happen,” Ciampa said.

In May, NYSNA members reached a contract agreement with NYP, as well as the Mount Sinai and Montefiore systems. The deal affected about 10,000 nurses and included the hiring of new nurses and guidelines for staffing ratios.

Nurses say recruitment and hiring are down.

Do it for the ‘gram – the mammogram.

To kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul visited a mobile mammography van in East Harlem on Wed., Oct. 2nd.

Run by Mount Sinai Health System and made possible by state funding, the van offers free mammograms to women.

On Wednesday, the unit was stationed outside Boriken Neighborhood Health Center on Third Avenue and East 123rd Street.

“When I was growing up, if you had breast cancer, it was a death sentence,” said Hochul. “Now, it’s much easier to get screened and treated early.”

Burton Drayer, Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice, said the hospital system has trained its focus on disease prevention and treatment at an early phase.

“Our mobile mammography van, which brings this vital cancer screening and prevention tool directly to women in our community, is one such example of how we hope to improve the health of our neighbors in

East Harlem and throughout New York City,” he said.

Since launching in 2018, the Mount Sinai Mobile Mammography Unit has screened 2,200 patients.

Nine of those were diagnosed with breast cancer, said Dr. Laurie Margolies, Chief of Breast Imaging at Mount Sinai Health System.

“Some of them have said to us, ‘I would not have gone for a mammogram if you weren’t parked on my street,’” remarked Margolies.

The mobile mammography van is one of several funded by New York State for deployment to underserved communities, after Governor Andrew Cuomo launched a “Get Screened, No Excuses” campaign and signed legislation in 2016 to eliminate barriers to breast cancer screenings.

The legislation eliminated annual deductibles and copayments for screenings for women over 40, and provides free screening for uninsured or underinsured women.

In addition, the laws provided funding so more than 200 hospitals and

clinics statewide could extend screening hours to accommodate women who have difficulty scheduling mammograms during

the typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday.

“You can find us in all sorts of places,” she said.

The health initiative was recognized.

Levine called it “shameful” that the agency would defile a scenic view “for a few extra dollars.”

“We are not going to stop until this sign is torn down,” he stated.

Taylor criticized Amtrak for not engaging

residents or the Community Board when planning its billboard. “No one should be able to do business in this community without talking to the residents of this community,” he said.

Ducat questioned why Amtrak is allowed to draw power from the city’s electrical grid to power the controversial billboard.

“Why are they able to take our power if

they don’t need to follow the city’s rules?” she asked. “That seems to be another way to stop this. Just pull the plug.”

Elected officials expressed concern that Amtrak could seek to place additional billboards further north near Fort Tryon Park and Inwood Hill Park if the legislation is not passed.

“There’s nothing stopping them from putting one of these every few feet on their property,” said Levine.

Acknowledging that the billboard controversy could be construed as a hyper-local issue, Espaillat said he hoped to build support for his Amtrak bill within Congress, noting that other members have expressed to him their own annoyances with Amtrak. “They seem not to be a good neighbor,” he said.

Espaillat hinted towards additional measures to pressure Amtrak. “They are fiscal in nature, and I will not divulge them today,” he said.

As the Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Task Force for Transportation, Infrastructure and Housing, Espaillat could move to re-examine funding allocations for the railroad agency, which receives nearly $2 billion in federal subsidies.

“I sit on the committee; they need my help,”

he said. “They will not have a friend if they don’t take this down.”

In an email, Amtrak Public Relations Manager Beth K. Toll said the agency made modifications to lower the height of the billboard after discussions with elected officials, “to ensure it would not obstruct any views towards the river and does not alter the skyline by design.”

“Amtrak has not received any complaints since the billboard’s installation in June,” she wrote. “Further, generating additional revenue is consistent with our mission given to us by Congress, and it allows us to reallocate resources to critical infrastructure projects throughout the Northeast Corridor (NEC), including in the New York region. Opportunities like these help support millions of our customers on the NEC, many of whom are New York residents and visitors, and we will continuously look for ways to invest in our customers and provide a safe, clean, reliable travel experience,” Toll added.

“That’s a trivial concession, honestly,” countered Levine. “Anyone who has stood here and admired this view knows when you see how damaged the landscape is now. We want the sign removed. That’s the only thing we’ll accept.”

“We have to feed them, clean the tank, sometimes we bring them into the classroom to show the younger kids,” said eighth-grader Manuel Ramírez, who helps with the iguanas.

“It’s a lot of fun,” added classmate Alexander Marte. “These are animals you don’t see every day in New York City.”

Among the most popular members of the collection are two large cockatoos, nicknamed “Big Bird” and “Snow.”

Student Isabella Martínez helps care for the cockatoos, who enjoy eating seeds and bananas. “It’s nice to walk around the school and see all the animals,” she said. “We’re kind of known as ‘the animal school.’”

All of the creatures have been donated to the school over the years, Woods said, sometimes unexpectedly. Woods recalled that he acquired “Big Bird” on the street during a school fire drill.

“A woman from the neighborhood came up to me, handed me the bird cage and said, ‘I’m moving. I need you to take this’ and she ran off,” he said.

The school also features a rooftop garden and greenhouse, where students grow various plants as well as tomatoes, peppers, mint, and raspberries.

Science teacher Edward Montes said maintaining the animals has its advantages for the students.

“They come to school prepared. It keeps them punctual. The have their

weekly routines in caring for the animals, so they learn responsibility,” said Montes.

“It’s one of the draws for the school,” Woods remarked. “The parents really like that their kids are exposed to this.”

“It’s right where they are, in their community. It’s at their mosque, at their church. And people use word of mouth to tell others, ‘This was easy, this was wonderful, go to do it.’”

“It’s only fitting that we start this month trying to make sure that everyone gets screened, because you never, ever know,” said State Senator Brian Benjamin. “You should tell everyone you know.”

Mount Sinai’s mammography van is ADA accessible and features a telephone translation service for assistance in any language.

In order to qualify for a free mammogram, patients must be a New York State resident.

Typically, women get mammogram results in about a week, Margolies said.

Once per month, the van visits Boriken Neighborhood Health Center, which provides bilingual health services to the Harlem community.

Located across from Taino Towers, where Boriken was once based, the health center moved into its 2265 Third Avenue headquarters in 2014.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Boriken is sponsoring a cancer walk outside its facility on October 23.

Hochul remarked that women often put their family’s needs ahead of their own, and end up neglecting their own health as a result.

“I have a message for all women – if you want to think of your families first, you need to get screened,” she stated. “The best thing for you to do for your family is early detection if necessary, and for you to be there long into the future, leading a healthy life.”

4. Low and middle-income countries will suffer the greatest impacts of climate change and its mental health implications. Low and middle-income countries are especially vulnerable to climate change. The World Bank predicts that by 2050, there will be 140 million climate migrants in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. Mass migration and resource scarcity increase the risk for violence, war, and political instability – all of which have profound mental health implications for individuals, societies, and generations.

5. Climate change and enduring stress. The majority of people in the United States and around the world are worried about how climate change poses a threat to them. This caused psychiatrist Dr. Lise Van Susteren to coin the term climate-linked pre-traumatic stress, or stress caused by the anticipation of the impacts of climate change. It is especially prevalent among climate scientists themselves, who most significantly report being 'afraid,' 'despairing,' and 'overwhelmed' by climate change. We must address both the mental health implications of current climate changes and the anticipation of the future of our world.

Sometimes it can seem that climate change is too big and too scary for any of us to have an impact – similar to how some think about mental illness. When I feel that way, I remember what Margaret Mead, recipient of the 1978 Planetary Citizen of the Year award, said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
