The vision of YCAC is to enhance and enrich life in Yates County through edu-cation and the advancement

of the arts.

To this end, we plan, pro-mote, and develop art pro-grams and projects; coordi-nate, schedule, and publi-cize events; develop and maintain physical facilities.

Programs of YCAC are supported by an annual grant from the Yates County Legislature, from commissions collected on Gallery sales, and by mem-

YCAC programs are sup-ported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts - Decentralization Pro-gram, which is adminis-tered locally by Finger Lakes Arts Grants & Services.

Summer Community Concerts Yates Concert Series, Inc. presents Concerts on the Courthouse Lawn at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings starting on July 5 through August 16. A lawn chair, your family and friends and some loose change for light refresh-ments will guarantee a pleasant summer

evening of light entertainment. Concerts move indoors to the adjacent Baptist Church in case of rain.

A selection of “classy” donations is all it takes to keep sending second graders to the art museum, to put costumes on dancers, to give a scout troop materials for art projects. We don’t want yard sale left-overs; please be discriminating, and recognize that you are making a donation of something of value for a good cause. Mary Rickman Scholarships Awarded On Tuesday, May 9, at 3:30 PM, Amanda Carman, a graduate of t Dun-dee High School and currently an undergraduate student at Alfred Univer-sity, was awarded a $1,000.00 Mary-Rickman scholarship at the Yates County Arts Council at 119 East Elm Street in Penn Yan. Amanda is de-scribed by her teacher, Professor Kevin Wixted of Alfred University, as a dedicated and serious student who is self motivated and serious about her art. She has made some of the most accomplished paintings to have come out of Alfred's undergraduate program. Amanda is equally versed in painting and ceramics, an accomplishment that shows her dedication to studio practice and research.. Her work was selected to represent the painting program for an exhibition attended by the Board of Trustees of

Alfred University. Marnie Lerch and Alyssia Roberts, seniors at Marcus Whitman High school, were awarded checks of $500.00 each from the Mary Rickman Scholarship fund at their school’s annual Senior Awards event on June 5. In her recommendations for Marnie and Allyssia, Mary S. Cherny, art teacher at Marcus Whitman, spoke highly of these two young women, both having compiled impres-sive portfolios and being recipients of Silver and Gold Keys in Scholastic competitions. Marnie Lersch is enrolled at SUNY Pur-chase, majoring in Painting, while Alyssia Roberts will be a stu-dent in the Fine Arts department of Nazareth College. These scholarships were established by Richard Rickman, of

Penn Yan, in memory of his late wife, Mary Loomis Rickman, to be administered by the Yates County Arts council, Inc. of which she had been a prominent member. Mrs. Rickman had been a much loved art teacher in the Penn Yan school district. She fostered a passion for art in her students, emphasizing the discipline and dedication nec-essary to develop the innate talent she saw in every one of her students. She stressed the necessity in building a portfolio to document the individual’s growth and diversity. Mary Loomis Rickman’s aims are reflected in the re-quirements for the recipients of the scholarship. They are: recommendations by the student’s teachers, the exis-tence of a portfolio, and enrollment as an art student in an institute of higher learning. Engelke Heggie represented YCAC in the awards ceremonies. YCAC is grateful for her chairing this endeavor. YCAC reminds friends of the late Mary Rickman (and other supporters of The Arts) that tax-deductible contributions to the scholarship fund may be made at any time, to ensure the continued support of young aspiring artists.

Color Glow...Exciting Exhibit in July Artists of International Reputation:

Don Andrews, Watercolor Painter Christine Barney, Studio Glass Artist

A week-long watercolor workshop with Don Andrews will culminate with the opening of The Gallery’s July exhibit, “Color Glow”, on Friday, July 14th, 5:00-7:00 PM. Don is famous for his exciting use of colors, both in landscapes and portraits. His instructional video, “Color Glow”, inspired the name of this exhibit. Paintings which he will create as demonstrations during his workshop will be shown at this opening. Complementing the theme will be hot-

formed or cast sculptural glass pieces by Christine Barney, bringing her art to YCAC for the third time. She apprenticed to Livio Seguso in Murano, It-aly, a rare experience for a woman, let alone an American. Her work is in collections in Japan, Russia, Italy, and across the United States, including the Corning Museum of Glass.

The opening reception will be the SECOND Friday of the month, July 14, 5-7 PM, sponsored by Keuka Spring Winery.

August 11 Opening for “Double Visions” Featured Artists Leon Fontier and Hannelore Wolcott Bailey

“Double Visions” may be reflections, repeated patterns, shadows, parallel images evoking memo-ries. Double visions will be expressed in pewter and in watercolors by our featured artists.

Everyone recognizes them: the lake plays a prominent role, with reflections streaming down from shores. The watercolors of Hannelore Wolcott Bailey have been well known in this area for many years, gracing public places such as Soldiers and Sailors Hospital as well as many private collec-tions. Trained in art in Europe, Hannelore has found joy in paint-ing all her life. She has organized the “Group of Six” artists who exhibit each July Fourth weekend in her barn at 253 E. Lake Rd.

Leon Fontier was born in the Congo, educated in Belgium, then he moved to Central New York where he has been living since 1972. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Yale Uni-

versity Art Gallery, the White House collection, and many private collections. Fontier Designs has been producing pewter ware in Central New York since 1985. The pieces are made from lead-free pewter using a variety of pewtersmithing techniques. includjng spinning, fabrication, and casting. His highly-polished (and non-tarnishing) surfaces definitely create “double visions”.

The reception will be Friday, August 11, 5-7 PM, sponsored by Glenora Winery.

Don Andrews, Member of American Watercolor Society, Here July 10-14

A graduate of the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Don Andrews is the author of “Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor” and “Rough Sketches: Short Stories of a Traveling Artist”. In order to get him to Penn Yan, we had to contract with him over 3 years ago! Don gives workshops throughout the United States, in Can-ada, Mexico, and Europe. We’ve selected the name of his video, “Color Glow”, for our July exhibit, in which he will participate. His workshop will help us explore our own personal approach to painting, with a search for a more vital color state-ment. Speaking of color, the American Journey color, “Andrews Turquoise”, was named in his honor. The Workshop will be held Monday thru Fri-

day, July 10-14, 2006, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Education Room, 135 Hamilton St., Penn Yan. The cost is $200 for YCAC members, $250 for non-members, and must be paid in full by May 15. Class size is limited and registration is on a first come first served basis.

· Send your name and contact information along with your check made out to YCAC to: Yates County Arts Center, c/o Fran Bliek, Workshop Coordina-tor, 119 E. Elm Street, Penn Yan, NY 14527.

· Refunds of class fees, less $10 administrative fee, will be made if you withdraw two weeks prior to a 5-day workshop. Please contact the Workshop Coordinator (Fran Bliek 607-243-7425) if you wish to with-draw or if you have questions.

The Yates County Photography Club will hold its annual picnic at 6:30 PM July 20 at the Penn Yan Boat launching Area. This is off Keuka Street along the Outlet. We hopefully will be using the pavilion near the tennis court. This is considered a family picnic, anyone is welcome. Participants should bring their table service, beverage, a dish to pass and meat to grill. Don’t forget your camera, there are many photo ops in this location. The photography Club does not meet in August.
