Introduction & background

The Young Cultural Ambassadors scheme hasbeen developed to help engage young peoplewith arts and cultural opportunities inHartlepool.

We want to start a dialogue with youngpeople to find out their views.

We want young people to view places likethe Gallery, Museum, Theatre and Library aswelcoming places for children and youngpeople to visit.

We hope to learn from the feedback wereceive and use it to develop a more engagingcultural offer for children and young people.

We would like children & young people toshare and promote opportunities amongsttheir friends and family.

The YCA project is a self led project withinschools and we aim to keep regular contactwith YCA’s and their progress via emailedupdates and occasional meetings. We wouldlike to be informed about outcomes fromactivities in the toolkit, and we hope they willgive us a good idea of what young peoplereally want from cultural venues in the town!

How to set up your YCA Group:u We would recommend a group is formed within school ideally the size of the group would be a minimum of five to maximum of 12

u We would suggest that the group meet up once a week or fortnight to discuss opportunities and develop activities. You could also combine this with working towards Arts Award Explore

We would like the YCA group to:u Create discussions in the school

u Undertake questionnaires and research

u Report back on their peers thoughts and ideas about culture in their town.

uWrite reviews

u Contribute to a newsletter and blog.

They can also tell us about the work that theyhave been doing in their school, whether it’s in

lessons or after school clubs. Use your goodwork to inspire other schools and children. It’sgood to shout about what you do!!

What we will provide:u A toolkit will be provided which includes suggestions of discussions and projects.

u Email updates of current events & opportunities

u YCA pin badge

u Branded bag

u sketchbook and pencil.

This project is a pilot scheme and will beled by a teacher within the school, we areopen to the School shaping the project to fitwith their own programme of activities*.

*The lead teachers email address will be added to the YCA mailing list andinfo can be passed to young people. If young people would like to be added tothe mailing list they must contact [email protected] themselves andrequest to be added.

Artist profiles

Logan HicksLogan Hicks is an American stencil artist, currently living and working in New York, inthe hub of America's urban art scene. Hishand-cut stencil process involves cutting aseparate stencil for each colour, then layeringeach colour upon the next until the final pieceemerges, often hundreds of hours later, as a“virtuoso” piece of stencil art which is to sayit is of outstanding technical achievement.

Originally a screen printer, Logan sold off hisequipment to finance his migration from theEast Coast to the West Coast, turning tostencilling to re-invigorate his printing. Sincethen he has become renowned as one of themost meticulous stencil artists workingtoday.

Lucian FreudLucian Michael Freud, 8 December 1922 - 20 July 2011) was a German-bornBritish painter. Known chiefly for his thicklyimpastoed portrait and figure paintings, hewas widely considered the pre-eminentBritish artist of his time.

Impasto is a technique used in painting and itmeans where paint is layered very thickly. Itcomes from an Italian word meaning “dough”or “mixture”

Face to Face: Portraits

What is a portrait? It is a work which has been consciously posedby a person or a group. It can be a painting, adrawing, a collage, a sculpture or a photograph. They can be made for many reasons. Many ofthese portraits have been done tocommemorate someone’s working life, likebeing in the army.

Reading a portraitThere are lots of things to look at in a portrait -how someone is sitting, what they are wearingand where they are having their picture painted. This can make the difference in whether aportrait is formal or informal.

PoseHow are they sitting and where are theirhands? Do they look relaxed or do they look asthough they are posing. In official portraits, people are usually in a fixed position usually inaccordance with the importance of their work

Facial expression is important. It is rare to seesomeone smiling in a Victorian portrait forinstance.

ClothingWhen a portrait is something to do withsomeone’s work or position they will often bewearing clothing associated with that. Personalportraits tell us about the person through thechoices of clothes they have made.

Background Many of the portraits here have nothing in thebackground, but sometimes they can leaveclues about the people. Sometimes there areobjects from their home or things from theirwork

Can you try to read a portrait?Look at the examples on the nextpage...
