YEAR 12 FORMAL FAREWELL

The Oaklands Event Centre was filled with excitement and anticipation on Thursday 10th November as the 42 graduating Year 12 students from Eden Marine High arrived, resplendent in their finest evening wear to attend their final school function, their formal. After tireless hours of planning, organisation and preparation, no one allowed the weather to dampen the mood. The evening started with the grand entrance of each student. MENTAL HEALTH MONTH‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!’ This idea was the focus behind Eden Marine High School’s promotion for Mental Health Month. Mental Health is a major focus for our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) team. Our PBL team put together a table of delicious treats including lemon jelly cups and homemade lemonade which were provided to our students for free. Students were encouraged to give a donation to the Reach Out organisation. Students were provided with information regarding mental health and supportive organisations. It was great to see all students actively engaged and enjoying the refreshments, as well as the important information.

SCHOOL CAPTAINSCongratulations to Eden Marine High School’s 2017 School Captains. Our candidates presented their speeches during a full school assembly on 21st October 2016. Our students and staff were then asked to vote for their top candidates. Well done to all of the students who presented their speeches. UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA EXCURSION6:00am start, Mr. Barros and Ms. Bond set us up for a 3-hour trip to the ACT. The bus trip consisting of sing-alongs, selfies and scenic views. On arrival at campus, we met students at the UC, from all walks of life. After the short introduction, we proceeded onto an Accounting lecture, which was surprisingly more interesting than initially thought. After this year 9 re-grouped and munched on some subway sangas’ provided by the Uni.Following this we attended another lecture that entailed Law Politics. In this lesson we learnt about the pros’ and cons’ of contracts, court and confrontation, also, Zoe signed a short-lived contract, for some ‘magical beans’ probably not the best choice. After this our groups were given a tour of campus life, which included three types of accommodation and various leisure activities which are provided by the AC students that organise games and mingling for first year students. On arrival to the main hub, our students participated in a scavenger hunt around campus finding a variety of things such as turtles, tree frogs and other interesting items/places. Once again all schools regrouped, to have a final chat and Q & A with current students at UC. Overall everyone had a splendid day out and about in Canberra, and arrived back safely home after the bus trip. Written by Lauren and Zoe, Year 9

BANDANNA DAYEden Marine High School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) coordinated Bandanna Day on Friday 28th October 2016. The SRC sold over 300 bandanas raising more than $1200 for the charity organisation, Canteen. Students gathered for a group photograph in the quadrangle at 12:50pm to show off their bandannas. Well done to all of the wonderful students and staff who purchased a bandana to support this great cause. Eden Marine High School’s winning house Imlay (who purchased the most bandannas) were rewarded with ice-cream cups for their efforts.

LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR Eden Marine High School students Lachlan, Kiah, Daniel and Anna recently represented their school admirably at the Lions Youth of the Year Club Final held at Merimbula’s Club Sapphire on 22nd November.Once again Eden Marine High School students performed to a very high standard. Anna of Year 10 won the overall Lions Youth of the Year Club Final, while Kiah of Year 11 won the Public Speaking Award at the Pambula-Merimbula Lions Club event. The competition is run at Club, Zone, Regional, District, State and National levels. Each competition follows a similar procedure whereby applicants undertake a panel interview based on a formal written application. After interviews with the judges, the students gave two impromptu speeches concerned with “how to encourage youth to remain in the Bega Valley” and “the problems that Australian farmers face in 2016”. This was followed by a 5 minute prepared speech on a topic of the students’ choice. Anna’s chosen topic was “Tertiary Education Should Be Free”, and Kiah spoke on “Equality for All”. Judges commended all participants on a very strong showing in this year’s competition, with the public speaking component of the competition coming down to less than a single point.“Our future is bright as these young individuals have demonstrated” Mr Drowley, English teacher and Eden Marine High School coordinator for the contest remarked, “Opportunities such as this truly allow us to see the calibre of young people we have in our community here on the Far South Coast”.Anna will now go on to represent the Pambula-Merimbula Lions Club and Eden Marine High School at the Regional Finals in Merimbula in February 2017.

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWSOn November 2nd 2016 Eden Marine High School’s Year 10 students participated in Mock Interviews to get them career ready. Thank you to the 12 Rotarians from the Merimbula and Pambula branches who conducted the Mock Interviews. The students were very nervous, but made to feel at ease.‘What a fantastic opportunity for us to gain experience for job interviews. VINTAGE CAR CLUBAs we near the end of the year the school would again like to thank Alex McQueen and the team at Sapphire Coast Historic Vehicle Club. The boys this year have completed a number of projects including the dodge in the photo our boys put together this vehicle from scrap with much of the parts machined. The club has supported these and many lads to develop lifelong skills from the mentors at the club. Thanks again from Eden Marine High School.

YEAR 9 DRAMA DAZZLE THE INFANTS OF EPSThe EMHS Year 9 Drama program culminates in a community performance each year in term 4. This year the group decided to create a short piece for the infants of Eden Primary School. The task was to create a piece of children’s theatre which was engaging for the target audience. Students allocated roles, both on and off stage, and developed a piece from start to finish as a class. The stories of Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel were intertwined and a physical performance involving a pesky chicken and some bumbling wolves had the infants leaping in excitement and screaming for more. This excursion is crucial for performance experience and builds teamwork and collaborative decision making in a fun and interactive way. The group would like to thank their adoring fans and the staff at Eden Primary School for allowing them this opportunity. Next year the group will prepare a piece to be performed at the Canberra Theatre Centre and work with The Bell Shakespeare Company as part of the Year 10 Drama program.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS On the 23rd November, Eden Marine High School Year 7,8 and 9 Girls participated in the Engage Workshop, Engineers without Borders (EWB).Engage is a Canberra-based not for profit organisation which partners with educational outreach providers running activities in urban centres. Through providing funding and coordinating on their behalf with our partner schools, we enable them to run their activities in Regional schools. Our goal is to give students in Regional areas the chance to meet university students and take part in hands-on workshops relevant to university topics. EWB Australia work with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through education and implementation of sustainable engineering projects. The ACT chapter of EWB also run workshops in schools to educate students about the issues in these communities and show them how engineering can be used to address these issues. An EWB workshop involves a short interactive presentation introducing a common issue facing the communities they work in, and then a hands-on activity around the issue. Students at Eden Marine High were asked to develop a prosthetic limb out of everyday material. Our students had a fantastic experience creating a limb.

EMBRACEOn Friday 25th of November Eden Marine High School has a special girls only afternoon and screened the Embrace movie to all girls from year 8-11. This included over 200 students, female staff and mothers. It was a huge success and many of the girls and staff became emotional throughout the screening, taken back with ladies stories and experiences. This event was an excellent opportunity to come together and learn about body image, be empowered to love the body you have and listen to others who have had challenges throughout their lives. I think everyone was able to relate to it, many students are still talking about it a week later and want to buy the DVD for their mums for Christmas. The movie is very inspirational and the EMHS Welfare team and Executive staff saw it as a vital resource to assist girls in becoming resilient, self-respected and responsible young women. We also invited female carers to the screening, as sometimes we all need a confidence boost! Mrs Wungluck spoke to the students at the end, reinforcing the importance of all of us creating a positive and embracing school community and it is the small things in someone’s day that can make a difference. “It made us feel good, when it was over we all felt connected as we shared the same experiences” Stef & Katie, Year 11“I felt empowered as a women” Kiah, Year 11“It was confronting, but in a good way” Steph, Year 11“Embrace was an excellent documentary that addressed a lot of self-image issues that all girls and women face. Bringing this positive message to teenagers allows them to embrace themselves as they are” Mrs Rhonda Douglas, Girls Adviser.

SCHOOL BAND TOUR 2016Eden High School band and the Year 11 Music class spent Monday the 5th of December showcasing their talent in Eden. The successful tour combined visits to BUPA, Eden Primary School and a concert on the main street in front of the Eden Post Office. The students performed really well in a variety of settings. The BUPA concert was a quiet affair with a great appreciation showed by the residents for the talents the EMHS Touring Ensemble. The Eden main street had no idea what was coming when the volume was turned to full and the musicians let it rock performing more of their up-tempo repertoire, a high light of this gig was the school bands rendition of AC/DC’s Long Way to the Top!The group spent the afternoon at Eden Primary School where former student Brook performed a beautiful song with Callum to a charmed audience. The students represented the school in a great way in our community and worked hard setting up and packing down all the equipment three times in one day! Congratulations to all the students’ involved and a big thank you to tutor Georgi Hargraves for her hard work and leadership of the School Band this year.

CRUISING YACHT CLUB EXCURSION 2016Monday morning, we rose early to catch the bus to Canberra. Once in Canberra we swapped onto a train which was to take us to Central Station Sydney. After the novelty of being on the train wore off, as it was a new experience for the majority of the group, we were all looking forward to reaching Sydney. On arriving in Sydney we were given a tour of the Rushcutters Bay Yacht Club, we made our way to Circular Quay, to a steak house in the Rocks, the meal was courtesy of the owner. That night we experienced our first night sleeping upon various yachts on the harbour, and we were all excited for our first day of sailing on Tuesday. Tuesday morning there was a strong wind, perfect for sailing. We were briefed about how to sail and the dont’s when navigating around the harbour. We took some time learning how to set up the boat and learning how to tie various knots, then we were off. In our new groups and with our respective coaches, we were taught how to steer, cast our spinnaker, control our main sail along with many other basic sailing skills. After a long day sailing around the harbour, we all went back to the club to get freshened up before catching the train to the movies, we all slept well that night.Wednesday morning, we headed off early to sail to Watsons Bay for lunch, it was smooth sailing the whole way and very enjoyable. We enjoyed fish and chips on the beach, as well as a quick tour around the bay. Then we headed back to Rushcutters Bay to prepare for twilight sailing. Five minutes before heading out with various different crews the rain came down. With a lack of wind and heavy rain it was difficult to both see ahead and continue the race. Many boats dropped out of the race, but with the wind slowly picking by the end of the race we were soaked, but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our Thursday sailing session was filled with a lack of wind, causing all of our boats to be towed into Balmoral Bay where we tied our boats to the moorings and went swimming and jumped off the jetty. Thursday night consisted of all of us going shopping at Bondi Junction where we got dinner and purchased small personalised gifts for our coaches, before returning back to the club and hitting the hay.Friday morning, our last day of sailing, we headed straight out into the harbour and the day consisted of racing each other on the yachts. With the end of the day drawing closer, it began to sink in that this amazing experience was nearly over. that night we headed off to Darling Harbour for dinner and an hour spent watching street performers. We attempted staying up as late as we could but having done so many activities, we were quick to head to bed and even quicker to fall asleep. Saturday morning, we headed off to Paddy’s Market enjoying local cuisine and a variety of stalls before jumping on the bus and heading back to Merimbula. This was an amazing experience and we would like to thank all the coaches that took part in teaching us the ways of a sailor, and to Mr Bulters, Ms Malcolm and Ms LeBlanc and Jean Bourgeois for putting up with us during this amazing experience. This trip was an amazing experience that we will not forget.

WASTE AUDIT: 7S WASTE AUDIT“60% of our rubbish that we put in our general waste (red bin) could be recycled.”- Source: www.recycling-guide.orgOn the 15th of September Class 7S took part in a Waste Audit for our school. We had Sam Ferrara from Bega Valley Shire Council and Julie Donne from Bournda EEC to run the day with us. We started the day by learning about what happens to our rubbish after we throw it away. We learnt that a lot of our, plastic scraps (bags, bottles, etc.) end up in the ocean. Our school is situated on the beautiful beaches of the Far South Eastern Coast, and this rubbish could end up on these beaches. The part we enjoyed the most was actually tipping the rubbish out of our school bins and sorting it into different categories. From this activity, it was very clear that most of the rubbish in our bins at school were food scraps. As there are no recycle bins in the playground, there was a fair percentage of recyclable products too. 7S are endeavouring to purchase and operate a worm farm. We are hoping that all staff and students will help us in this venture. Thank you to Julie and Sam for conducting this Waste Audit and making it an enjoyable and interesting experience!

CAREER MATTERSInterested in the Defence Force? Not sure where to start? The Australian Defence Force – Army, Navy and Air Force – provides opportunities for study and training leading to specialist trade or professional qualifications. The process of applying to join the Defence Force is a lengthy one, so it is important to start researching and thinking early.

Many technical and professional career opportunities

There are a very large number of jobs and careers that you can aim for, including: • Marine specialist • Medical assistant • Metal smith • Military police • Laboratory officer • Legal officer • Vehicle mechanic • Dentist • Dental assistant • Electrician • Pharmacist • Physiotherapist • Catering officer • Chef • Civil engineer

Did you know?

… That it is also possible for young people to further their interest in music professionally as a musician in the defence forces – and travel all around the world playing in bands.

Career pathways There are two different career paths in the defence forces, which you can look towards after finishing school:

General entry - which leads to trade-related, team oriented work. You will be paid while you train and earn industry-recognised qualifications. For most of this work, you need to have completed and passed Year 10 English and Mathematics, and be 16 years old.

Officer entry - which leads to management focused work, where you need to demonstrate your potential for leadership and decision-making. You train at the Australian Defence Force Academy, and study a degree at the University of New South Wales. You are paid throughout your study, and do not have to pay university fees. When you make a commitment to joining the defence force, you commit to remaining in the service for a set period of time (called an Initial Minimum Period of Service), which can vary from 5 to 14.5 years. You can also apply for a Defence Gap Year directly after Year 12 – this is a year’s paid experience in the Force, without a longer commitment.

How do I apply? There is a set series of steps for application. The recruiting takes some time (so start in Year 11): Step 1 – attend a YOU session at a defence office – Your Opportunities Unlimited Step 2 – attend an assessment day, with interviews including a psychology interview and medical assessment Step 3 – for officer entry, there will be other interviews, and application to the University of NSW via UAC.

What can I do now? • Think about applying for a defence work experience placement • Work on your health and fitness • Make sure you are passing your subjects! • If you are applying for ADFA, you need an ATAR to be eligible • Take up leadership opportunities
