Writing for a practical
purpose (35 minutes)
There will be approximately five reading comprehension questions. These
will test how well pupils can understand, analyse and evaluate a passage
from one of a range of genres, including (but not limited to):
Travel writing (eg recounts of journeys, diaries)
Autobiography or biography
Journalistic writing (eg a newspaper report)
Persuasive writing (eg a speech or long advertisement)
Discussion text (presenting two or more sides to a particular issue or
argument)
Candidates are required to answer one question from a choice of four.
These may require the use of prose for a practical purpose: to argue,
persuade, explain, advise or inform. In addition, there is the option to write
on one or more texts which candidates have studied in class or

Poetry section (35 minutes)
Questions will ask pupils to respond to the poem in various ways, focusing
on how:
writers achieve their effects;
reveal their feelings;
make readers more aware.
Pupils will need to know about and identify: metaphor, simile,
personification, alliteration, rhyme, rhythm and metre, enjambment and end-
stopping.
Creative Writing (35
minutes)
Pupils must answer one of up to six questions. Questions cover the
following types of writing: descriptive; narrative; personal; discursive;
persuasive.

3. Light & Sound: the behaviour of light, hearing, vibration & sound.
4. The Earth & beyond: the solar system – eclipses, satellites
The boys will be getting a copy of the syllabus requirements shortly which will show the areas / content needed to be revised. Please
be aware that they do not have to learn the whole Pickering book!

An evidence section worth 20
marks on the Black Death
An essay comprising two parts,
part a) a descriptive essay
worth 20 marks, and part b) a
discursive essay worth ten
marks
The evidence question will be on the Black Death. Pupils will need to write an
essay based on three sources and their own knowledge and understanding.
The essay section will be based on the following:
A war or rebellion
A monarch
A religious event
A history changing event
