9.18amExplanation: Some young people have difficulties in maintaining a balanced approach to their

use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies. Having

a sense of how much time you spend each day can help you to balance your daily

activities. Research indicates that downloading music or video, email, instant

messaging and online gaming are the most popular online activities. (zdnet, 2006)

Activity 2: My Screen Time How long do you spend each day and each week on the Internet, using gaming

devices and on your mobile phone? This also includes using them for the purposes

of homework as well as for entertainment reasons.

Fill in the worksheet to see how long your screen time is each day. Lets talk about some responses (i.e. ask questions such as - in what category do

you spend most of your time? What device do you spend the most time using?)

Lets talk about some of the issues now with having an imbalance between screentime and offline time. We are going to discuss the questions on your worksheet

    as a class.

    1. How much time am I spending on these activities for entertainment?Identifying how individuals and fellow class members spend their time online

how important is technology to them.

    2. How much time am I spending on the computer for homework?Sharing ideas regarding how to use the internet effectively for homeworksharing

    search strategies, sites etc.

    3. Do I sometimes mix homework and entertainment? Does this have an impact onhomework?

How do individuals and fellow class members balance social and homework time

do they feel they have the right balance? Is peer pressure a factor with online

activities? Does this impede the ability to complete work well? Explore the fact

that everybody is different in terms of study styles. Some people seem to do better

with regular breaks from study for social interaction while others are better off
